We were a group of 12 which included 6 children, and decided to do self catering. It was the first time to this camp for all of us. Half of the chalets are really old and dated and need revamping (which was where we stayed) and the other half are newly built and nicer. Despite the dated rooms, they were kept really clean and neat. They are not really set up for self catering and we had to share the one available kitchen. We got the sense that priority was given to the guests who had paid full board as we sometimes had to wait to recycle the plates. (Granted we went at a busy local holiday weekend and the camp was full). Advice -Take a few of your own cutlery even when they advise you that they have enough. The kitchen staff were very helpful. We gave them our food to warm up or prepare; although service was slow. The pool is very clean and the kids had a good time swimming. We also went on the lake for an afternoon sundown cruise. The fishing was not great; no one caught a single fish. We went on an afternoon game drive which felt rushed (our guide seemed in a hurry to get somewhere) but despite this we were fortunate enough to see Wildebeest and Hartebeest (Never see these before). All in all, an enjoyable time was had by all.

Reaching Itezhi Tezhi is quite an adventure and be ready for some bumpy 80+ km when you leave the M9 tarred road...
The hotel itself is nicely located with great views of the lake. Possible to do boat trips and excursions to the nearby Kafue Park (avoid booking last minute for these excursions to avoid disappointment). Chalets are run down and need some refurbishments, even if some of them are called "new". I dare not describe the mosquito nets: you can either use the ceiling fan or the nets because one is in the way of the other. There was luckily air-conditioning ...
Staff is friendly but not very helpful and the manager should be more present and manage the place better.
Despite the rather poor accommodation quality, the price is very reasonable so one can also not be too demanding in a country where accommodation close to their national parks is usually very expensive.

Food: in line with the cheap rates.

The lodge is ideally situated on the banks of Itezhi Tezhi lake and very close to the entry gate to Kafue National Park. It has independent cottages with a beautiful view of the lake and greenery around. The restaurant offers very good food especially fresh fish from the lake. You might even get to eat game meat sometimes. But the vegetarians have very limited choice. The lodge provides safari drive in National Park with experienced guides.
Another peculiarity of the lodge is the rock rabbits roaming freely around the campus.

The most disgusting place ever to stay if you planning a trip to Kafue National Park. Staff very un professional and not trained well for the hotel industry. Staff and camp management very racist. Can never recommend this place to any one. Sent many emails of complaint upto date not a single mail has been responded to.

We had a fabulous time camping at New Kalala. Facilities good. Water, showers, braai stand what more do you need.
Game drive also good value. Very relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff.
This is not a luxury camp but rather a good value comfortable place. Skies amazing!

We camped at the New Kalala campsite. In general the campsite is good, with quite a number of power points and even a few lights around the campsite. The campsite is just by the lake shore, so it is good for kids to fish all day and you can hear the spray from the dam wall all the time ( a bit like at Vic Falls)
The ablutions are fine, with warm water, but nothing special.
There could be better demarcation of the camping, especially if it was crowded, but we went over Easter and the site was not too full.
There is plenty of wood provided for fires, but there is only 1 braai stand for cooking in the whole site, so get there early so you can use it.
Staff are helpful and it is fine to use the pool if you are camping.
The National Park is a simple 10 min drive to the gate and we saw 6 lions and many elephants on our drive.
Itezhi Tezhi town is also only 10 mins away in case you have forgotten your toothbrush or run out of bread.
Currently the road from Lusaka is very good for most of the trip, but with an awful 30 km of very bad dirt and then 40 km of old tar. It took about 4.5 hrs to drive

The older hotel rooms need some renovation, but besides that the service, the food and especially the view makes the stay very pleasant and recommandable.

For a overnight stay before going into Kafue National Park this hotel is the perfect choice.

The most beautiful setting, in the middle of nowhere with the most amazing star filled sky. Close to the Kafue gate. Unfortunately even the 'new' chalets are rickety and in desperate need of some maintenance and a good scrub ! Dassies living in the ceiling with dropping falling through the cracks into the room and onto everything. Staff not trained adequately and everything is extremely slow. As a vegetarian the only meal option was a toasted sandwich but they ran out of bread. It seems to be a place frequented by day visitors at the campsite. After all that said, it really is a beautiful place, doesn't break the bank and has huge potential.
