My family and I stayed in Etendeka Mountain Camp in August 2022. We received a very warm welcome from the friendly staff. We loved the scenic sunset drives (where you may see giraffes or elephants), the morning walks (where you can learn about the highly interesting local culture) and the community dining (where you can exchange stories with fellow travellers). The tents are fantastic, especially the bucket showers! On our first evening, Dennis treated us to an exploration of the night sky with his telescope and a number of anecdotes. Over the last three decades, Dennis and his team have created something really special: a friendly, problem solving, culture in the midst of some stunning scenery. Highly recommended.

A real away from it all place!  You cannot drive to Etendeka yourself.   You leave your car at Palmwag Lodge and they will pick you up and drive you for around an hour over some pretty treacherous roads.   The camp stands in a 50,000 hectare unfenced concession.  It is supposedly the most pristine area in Namibia; it is certainly very remote, very beautiful and a very special place to visit. There were just the 4 of us for most of our stay; on our first evening there were another 3 couples who all left early the next morning. I believe the name Etendeka comes from the Afrikaans word for flat topped mountain, of which there are many.  We were apprehensive about staying in a camp in the wilderness, with a bucket shower, but we absolutely loved the experience.   The beds are very comfortable, each tent has its own flushable toilet and bucket shower, filled from the tap in the sink which has hot water.  With no light pollution, the night skies are filled with stars and an amazing milky way.  We didn't see many animals, mainly Mountain Zebra and the odd kudu.   There were lions but too far away for us to see them.   But the scenery is staggeringly beautiful; the silence is deafening. Our guide Boas drove us up into the mountains in the morning and took us for a lovely 5km hike with stunning vistas.  Late afternoon, he took us on  a sunset drive.   The front of the landrover became a table with table cloth and we had drinks and snacks whilst we watched the sun go down, just beautiful.  Dennis was our host at the camp; he does a great job of making you feel welcome and even eats his meals with you, whilst regaling camp stories from over the years.    The home cooked food was absolutely delicious; how they manage to produce such food in such a remote location with limited supplies is beyond me.   And the oaty biscuits served with afternoon tea and coffee are to die for.   We spent 2 nights at the camp, 1 full day, and were sad to leave.

Recently returned home from a 3 night stay at Etendeka Mountain Camp, as part of a self drive trip around Namibia. It was a truly special way to end our 3 week trip and one that will linger long in our memories. A true ' get away from it all ' location , comfortable tented accomodation in the middle of beautiful nowhere. Highlights would have to be lying in bed looking out at our beautiful galaxy and listening to the distant roar of the desert adapted lions . Also our wonderful walks and game drives with Boas .The sight and sound of thousands of migrating swifts passing over the camp one morning , the roast chicken dinner cooked in the embers of the fire.....I could go on ! Thankyou Dennis and Kapoi and your wonderful team. You took such good care of us.

If you want to be away from anyone else in Namibia and are ok with camping, an outside toilet and shower and not having hot water in the morning, then this is the place for you. We arrived at Palmwag Lodge (weird place in the middle of nowhere) from Twyfelfontwein, which was only 1.5hr drive. This meant that we had nearly 3.5hrs to kill before our pick up at 4pm. The staff at Palmwag didn’t give us any information about the pick up, where to leave the car, or what facilities we could use while waiting, so it was rather disappointing to say the least. The Etendeka camp is in a concession run by Dennis who is a great astronomer and a great believer in eco-tourism. If you ha e been staying in lodges this will be a shock to the system, but if you have been camping it will probably be quite acceptable. We found that to have a hot shower you had to have one in the evening, as the hot water chilled down rather dramatically overnight as their solar heating is t the latest vacuum system like other hotels, which retain the heat. All meals are convivial with everyone sitting at a big long table to ensure the conversation is maintained, irrespective of nationalities or language. If you arrive with others, your activities will be with those others throughout your stay so be ready to be sociable and pleasant with your fellow travellers. Food was excellent and home cooked, even on the firepit as it was our first evening. The team there are passionate about what they do and Dennis even lent me his tripod so i could do some astrophotograhy. Definitely for those who want a very remote experience.

We had an incredible time at Etendeka. A very special place. The staff were amazing from the owner to the guides and hospitality staff - so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the area, nature and wildlife. The food was delicious and just what was needed before and after some great activities which included nature walks and drives. A unique and special place and we cannot wait to return. Thank you so much to a very special team at Etendeka.

We did the two night mountain walking trail. My only regret is not doing the three night walk. This was absolutely unforgettable. After a few hours walking, the first night was spent river side; the second day’s hike up to the mountain tents to the most magical overnight experience of our lives. The guide was so knowledgeable, kind, and patient. The food was gourmet. We are out of shape, middle agers who enjoyed the walks - this should be on anyone who likes hiking absolutely MUST for Namibia. On the drive back to our cars from the main lodge, we saw hyena, two lions, and giraffe. Stunning.

Etendeka was the most welcoming lodge we stayed in during our entire trip to Namibia. This is all down to Douw, his wife Mariza, and our guide Bonnie, who are full of warmth, knowledge, and stories; they turn a camp in the desert into a home away from home. The 90 min drive from Palwag to the lodge is worth it. The lodge is beautifully isolated which makes it perfect for star gazing. The communal table and bar makes the experience cosy and friendly. Douw is a master barman (ask for a Tonic & Gin vs a Gin & Tonic) and the food is delicious. We stayed on Christmas Day and Christmas dinner was as good as we could have cooked at home. The salads for lunch and proper bread are also much appreciated and both of these are scarce elsewhere in the country. Bonnie’s mountain walk and dusk game drives are excellent. There’s more to see than you’d think for the arid landscape. We saw a lion, several eagles, and lizards. There are also elephants and rhino but we didn’t see any. Would thoroughly recommend Etendeka.

This is a slack pack hike through amazing, rough and rugged Namibian landscapes...Absolutely stunning experience!! Our guide gave us tons of interesting information about the area's fauna and flora. The Etendeka staff is wonderful and spoiled us beyond words! Food was delicious and plenty! The sleeping&bathroom structures are solid and beautifully set. We hiked in the middle of winter but were very comfortable and warm in the sleeping rolls supplied. A must do!!

We are kicking ourselves not to have done this earlier because it’s a place that deserves a repeat visit.... one of the most unforgettable trips we have done in the 3 years we have lived in Namibia. Unable to leave our host country due to COVID, we decided to do a 12 day trip north. We spent 2 nights at Etendeka on the walking tour, 1 night at River camp and the 2nd night overlooking the spectacular viewpoint. We were lucky because Douw, who is normally the manager, was our guide and it was like being with a walking encyclopedia (but more fun and infinitely more interesting) of nature all things wild and wonderful. There is nothing this man does not know and cannot tell in a funny and captivating story. The first night, camp was surrounded by hyenas and we slept under the stars - I counted at least 3 shooting stars! After a great breakfast, we then hiked 14k to the next camp through the magnificent Namibian Kunene landscape to mountain camp. There are some hills at the end but the averagely fit person could manage this. If you go in Namibian winter, pack a warm hat for nights as it can get windy in bed but the tents are well equipped and Douw’s grilled Oryx will warm your belly. His lovely wife prepared lots of great dishes for us too- poached pears in the wilderness anyone? Thank you for an truly exceptional experience.
