Terrible rooms not befitting the price. Very bad beds not comfortable at all. The toilets a complete mess, broken seat covers. Entry doors with holes in them compromise ones privacy. Poor room service.

Venice Beach is located right on the lake in Monkey Bay. The staff are super friendly. The rooms are very basic. I had a self contained room which came with a ‘en-suite ‘, a double bed and a small fan. The shower is only cold. There was nowhere to put my clothes ... not even a shelf nor a bedside table. The service is slow. It can take an hour or more to get a meal. Location was beautiful. They have a couple of kayaks and you can rent a charter boat to take you out to islands.

Location is awesome if you want: Secluded large Beach space. Volley Ball. Hammocks. There are rooms located on the beach within metres of the water. (As are most of the lodges in Monkey Bay -quiet stand alone serene lodges vs. Cape Maclear -touristic lively zone). Clean, safe and friendly. Good food (grilled fish and rice with sauce 2500k) Private as though you're staying at your own lodge on the beach on the outskirts of a Malawi village. Extremely basic: No wifi. No hot water shower. 8 bed dorm with key lock. Mosquito nets for top bunk only (In May I didn't need it). Private rooms also available. Camping available. 15 minute walk from bus drop off but easy to find; ask for directions from Patrick at pink fronted restaurant (slightly pricey but good food). Price tag reflects the amenity offering (3000k one bed in dorm in May 2016) Ask Sam to take you to the islands on his kayak -super friendly and informative bar manager. Bring water! 500k for 500ml bottle; only 150k in supermarket.

I first came to malawi in 2011 and eventually went to the lake in 2012,venice beach back packers in monkey bay..was my first experience! The lodge is beautiful, the water is crystal clear and the staff are super friendly. The only downside is that the kitchen is very slow,so if you're in a hurry..go to a KFC or fast food joint in the city!! But the scenery, white beach sand and ice cold beer will keep you busy ;)
