This Hostel is located in Butre, just the neighbouring village of the famous Busua Beach. Busua changed negatively in the last years. Butre is much nicer and relaxed. You still can do a daytrip to Busua. The Hideout Lodge is a perfect place to relax completely. I went there with 2 friends and stayed three nights. You could easily spend more. After breakfast you just do 5 steps and you jump in to the amazing sea and enjoy the waves. The restaurant is very nice, the staff friendly. We stayed in the Dorm which was completely fine and a good deal.

Stayed at the Hideout after traveling Ghana two weeks on a work trip - mainly inland. So arriving at the Hideout, just by the sea, to feel the airy breeze, was just perfect. The surroundings are very nice. Not overcrowded, but nearby is small fishing villages, which you can easily walk to and just sit at the beach and chat with the lobster fishermen. True hidden paradise long away from the tourist trail. The place itself is pretty basic, but the huts are indeed charming and overall there is lots of character and a cosy and laid-back atmosphere. On top of that, the food is great and prices are reasonable. Will return.

I stayed here back in 2007 and returned in 2010. No, the food isn't any better, no the rooms aren't any better, (although room 2, which I unfortunately got on both occasions is the worst - I have heard some of the others are nicer, so try and avoid it at booking), and no the service has not improved in any way shape or form (2 hours + for breakfast). But, do you know what, I still love the place! It’s situated on the best beach in Ghana, and really is a beautiful spot. The gardens are very well planted, there are hammocks and plenty of places to sit under the trees and relax, the new budget tree-houses look smart and the old uncomfortable bamboo bench seats are long gone. The place is so laid back it is horizontal, and if you can get over the fact that nothing, if anything happens, (and if it does then it will do very slowly), then you can have a good time here. The nights are filled with the smell of Rasta smoke, and the sound of drumming. If you arrive at a 100 miles an hour, and expect everything to be perfect, then you won't enjoy it. If you arrive with an open mind, a bit of time on your hands and an attitude to relax regardless, then this is the place for you. Take a walk up to the brilliant Ghana Spirit or onto Fanta's Folly for a change of scenery and menu, or take a most pleasant stroll over the hill to Busua. Be warned the sea at Butre, although as far as I can see is safe, has large waves and is probably not suitable for children, the sea at Busua seems a little calmer. The Hideout has a great vibe about it, and unlike some other places, is not distant from the local community, they had a group of women from Butre singing and dancing around a fire and everyone there was involved banging drums, clapping and even dancing along. Leave your expectations at the gate and enjoy. Tess is still there, Ellis comes around and entertains, and the big guy (whose name escapes me) seems to be putting a lot of effort into smoothing things out and improving standards. He even gave us our 2hr + breakfast for free. If you think Big Millies or The Green Turtle is proper Ghana, then you clearly haven't been to the Hideout........

Came with a big group of friends and this place quickly felt like a home away from home. The rooms are clean, the whole bungalow situation is so cool and feels private. The main area where you eat is a dream, just over one of the prettiest and most pristine beaches I've ever seen! The sand is so soft and fine that that it squeeks when you walk on it, and the water is so warm and delightful to swim in.

The service was above and beyond. Everyone who works there was so friendly and cool, and open to chatting and teaching us some Ghanaian culture, music, card games, and even a little Twi! I have to specifically call out Francisca who we all absolutely adored. She ended up feeling like another friend in our group by the end of the trip. Can not recommend this place more highly, I can't think of a nicer place to stay for the price.

I travelled back to Ghana with friends again this year and we did lots of travelling to different places, places we had never been before however, we were all yearning to get “home” to Hideout. This place is like no other in all of Ghana it truly is like going home. People like us who come often know it but so do people who come for one visit. The amount of people we met on our last stay who had come for two days and ended up staying four or five days instead we’re many. There was even a couple who came for two nights and stayed for ten days and another who came by for the day, cancelled their bookings in Cape Coast and stayed at Hideout instead.
Hideout is constantly updating and working away on its landscape and buildings to provide more space and a fresh feel for their guests. I had to laugh at the last review about their being no hot water and no internet. There is no hot water in 90% of the places you travel to in Ghana and who wants it, it’s so hot, but the water is also not ice cold. It’s not even possible. And sure Hideout doesn’t have strong internet but you’re on the beach in the middle of the jungle, unplug for five seconds and soak up the sun, the beauty and warmth of the environment all around. And for anyone who knows Ghana, you can’t control internet/phone network. It will be what it will be.
Butre Beach is the most breathtaking beach you could possibly ever imagine, arguably the most untouched in the whole country. The swimming is fantastic and Hideout has beautiful comfortable new beach beds to lay on under the coconut trees. The newly stoned patio throughout the dining spaces is beautiful and spacious, the new indoor dining area provides a cool lit and well ventilated area to escape to in the evening or rely on in the rainy season. Each bungalow has a different unique touch, art work, furniture and a garden that tell a story. Hideout has been around for more than 16 years, the first development on the beach ever. It has grown and evolved and created such a vibrant comfortable friendly and unique atmosphere that you truly will not find at any other spot in the country. Check out the new photos of the place and wonderful new touches.
The food is of course phenomenal. Theo and his staff are experts when it comes to satisfying every pallet! The kitchen is also super efficient making ordering an afternoon snack of bruschetta or potato wedges with garlic sauce even easier between swims. George, Kofi, Gideon, Eva, Kwesi and Tony among the other staff are always there ready to help you before you can even ask. At Hideout you are family. There are no worries.
Activities: Hike to Busua for surfing, walk the beach to Tobrah the giant rock God, get a river boat tour with Tony to see monkeys and crocodiles, hike to the Dutch fort on the hill, walk the foot bridge into Butre village. Have a Piña colada in a coconut and enjoy the sunsets as they fall into the jungle over the village. Stay for a day or weeks on end, Hideout will not disappoint for the traveller in search of a peaceful gem in Ghana. Enjoy!!

I visited Hideout Lodge for a few days, and want to give a balanced review about my time there.

Pros:

Staff is amazing! George, Kofi, Tony, and everyone were lovely people and all went out of their way to make sure my stay was wonderful. I appreciated the warm welcome, and felt like each person there was family.

FOOD!! The food is some of the best I've had, not just in Ghana, but anywhere. I cannot say enough good things about the food. Wine selection is a bit limited, but the wine that they have is good and complements the meals nicely.

Activities: there are a ton of activities that you can take part in, and everyone on staff is very helpful in arranging whatever it is you want to do. Surfing, hiking, and trips to the local village are all offerings.

Cons:

This property can use A LOT of updating. The pillows in my room smelled mildew-y and sweaty (the smell was so bad I could barely sleep), the blankets seemed less-than-fresh, and the washcloths/towels were quite thin. Some people may enjoy very rustic accommodations, and I thought I did as well, but this was far too rustic for my taste. Of course, the other rooms may have been better, but this was my experience in the beachfront room.
*Also, if you are squeamish about bugs or small reptiles (lizards, etc), this isn't the place for you. I don't mind bugs and reptiles at all, so that aspect didn't bother me one bit.

I was not told upon arrival that you had to request hot water for showers. There was no other way for me to have known this (there isn't any information in the room), so I took an ice cold shower and washed my face with ice cold water. Be sure to ASK for hot water!

Overall:

I personally would not return to Hideout Lodge to stay the night (although I'd go back for food in a heartbeat!!). I found the accommodations to be below par, and I was not comfortable really settling into my room. The location is fantastic, and I don't mind sparse rooms, but cleanliness/freshness of a room is my top priority and in that, Hideout Lodge fell short.

Also, I wanted to mention that internet is hit or miss here. For you, this could be a pro or a con. I did not need to use the internet other than to briefly check in with family, so I was fine - but don't plan to come here and work online unless you have your own setup.

If you read the below reviews there is no need to repeat the following (despite the fact that I will indeed repeat to assure It!):
- the food is delicious. Honestly the best vegetarian dishes I had since I am in Ghana (it's been 10 months so far). Best ratatouille I ever had
- staff are so generous and respectful
- it's located in the best beach I have seen in Ghana so far. Clean and beautiful. What a gem!
I am usually the type of person who would never return to a place - I am always in search of the next destination. But with Hide Out it's a different story.. its been only a few hours I left but I already wish I was back there. There is something special about the atmosphere in Hide Out..

Most amazing place! A true piece of paradise on earth! I went there with my boyfriend, who actually became my fiance on that holiday, because this is definitely the place to propose properly! The owners and staff are nicest people in the world, they even drove into city (which btw was about 1 hour drive) to buy gluten free flour, so that I could get pancakes for breakfast, since I have celiac's disease. So thoughtful of them! This is definitely a place worth visiting - although I'm not much for telling everybody to go there, because I'm afraid it will loose some of it's lonely paradise feeling... But I'm taking my chances, because it's amazing and it's cheap. And not to forget; they make the best food in Ghana - especially their lobster! Oh my... I had it almost everyday... I'm out of words.

This definitely is my favorite place in Ghana. Beautiful place. Very calm, clean and amazing beach. The staff understands exactly what you need. They arranged everything for us perfectly. They let us change to the treehouse when it was not occupied anymore and instantly cleaned for us and moved our stuff. They can guide you to Busua for a very low price and show you everything you need. When coming back after a long day and having ordered our food they said: "Your food is almost ready, but if you need a shower and freshen up before, you can do so." Never saw this level of service for this price in Ghana. Would come here again anytime.
