Travellers' Choice
Somalisa Tented Camp is set in the heart of Hwange National Park Zimbabwe, and is known as the land of the giants for its big elephant herds. Nestled in a stunning location tucked away on an acacia island along the edge of an ancient seasonal flood plain, Somalisa provides guests with breathtaking views of the savannah plains across the famous Kennedy Vlei line. Recently re-built, Somalisa Tented Camp has upgraded its level of accommodation to that of complete comfort and luxury whilst still maintaining its focus on the guiding and hosting of guests to ensure the ultimate guest experience. Consisting of seven elegantly furnished Sail Tents with gauze sliding doors, a glass wood-burner fireplace for the cold winter nights, and an overhead fan for the hot summer days, each tent has en suite bathroom facilities including flush toilets, an indoor and outdoor shower, as well as a copper slipper-style bathtub. The main decking area includes split level decking with a separate lounge and dining area, as well as a small splash pool for guests overlooking the “Elephant Pool” and a natural waterhole where herds of game congregate to drink and where guests can relax whilst soaking in the African bush. Activities include guided walks lead by qualified and passionate guides who will share their knowledge and love of the bush with you, game drives and night drives. Wildlife sightings include elephant, kudu, sable antelope, zebra, wildebeest, gemsbok, the rare and endangered roan antelope, buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, hyena, and many other wildlife species.

Wonderful friendly people, awesome good guide (Clement), fantastic food and lots of sighting directly at the camp but also on several game drives: Lions, Cheetahs, Sables, Gamsbock, Hyenas, Elands, Steenbocks, Impalas and last not least Elephants. We saw lots of birds and learned much about trees and plants. Everybody was very helpful, the bungalows were fantastic and we loved the piece at the camp very much. Visited the camp for the second time, another stunning guide (Godwin) - I am sure I will come again. One of the most impressing camps I've ever been

Upon arrival - greeted by Ronald, who over the days we where there showed quite some skills in dancing (moonwalk, Jerusalema etc) - we felt very welcome. Great camp with great service but yet still a relaxed feeling of home. Animal life around the camp was fantastic and having the waterhole close to our room we had animals all around 24/7. Then the most important for a successful safari : our guide Dophas was excellent and we really enjoyed the game drives - he had this great mix of knowledge, social skills and humour. We had great sightings and a lot of fun. This is a lodge I would love to return to.

We had the time of our lives at Somalisa! Our guide, Calvet, was exceptional and incredibly knowledgeable about each animal, bird and plant we encountered. We loved every game drive and the walking safaris (even if we did run into a pride of lions feasting on a Buffalo). Ronald, Star and the rest of the lodge staff were incomparable as well. We were there for our honeymoon and the staff went out of their way to ensure that we had the time of our lives (which we did)! Somalisa is absolutely beautiful and the service is truly out of this world. My husband loved Chef’s homemade hot sauce and when we left, he was gifted a pot to take home! We never got sick of watching the daily migration of elephants to the water hole (especially the babies!). Thank you so much for helping creating such wonderful memories! We cannot wait to return!

Me and my wife stayed here for three nights as part of our honeymoon and it ws the highlight of our trip. The staff at the camp deserves the upmost praise. Sandie our host along with her team Charity and Robert made sure our stay was exceptional. They always made sure we were comfortable and had what we needed. One night they even went out of their way to set us a candlelight dinner in our tent for our honeymoon/last night on camp. Additional shout out to the chef Trevor, the meals he cooked were better than home and made us excited each time we sat down. It is important for us to also thank Mike our guide. We learned so much about the park and he went out of his way to make sure we had good interactions with the game we saw. Mike could dive into the scientific details on anything you asked him and his sociable nature always made him a joy to be around. It was always "Happy Days" any time Mike was around. Outside of the exceptional staff. The camp was excellently decorated, comfortable and spotless. Our tent was spacious and had all the amenities we needed and located directly in front of the watering hole to watch elephants and game pass by. We saw all the game we hoped to see while at the park (plenty of lions!) and the serene nature of the surroundings make this a top destination that should be on your itnerary. We could not have asked for anything more out of this stay and encourage everyone to visit here if you can. All the best to the team and we hope to see you again in our travels some day. -Jimmy/Sarah

Somalisa was all around 10/10. Excellent staff, accommodations, and game viewing. Ronald, our host, was fantastic. Super friendly, interesting to talk to, and extremely helpful/on top of everything. Everyone else on the team was amazing and they all seemed really happy to be there. Our guide, Calvet, was excellent. His 30 years of guiding experience was apparent and we had some great signings. Highlights were tracking lions on foot and the elephant hide and platform. If you like elephants, this is the place for you. The viewing opportunities allowed us to really observe their behavior and social interactions, which you don't get as much from a regular game drive. The tent was lovely and well-appointed. Safari style but with modern touches that made it feel authentic, cozy, and luxurious. The tea/coffee pass through and bottle of hot water in the room every night for evening herbal tea was a huge plus! The bed was huge and extremely comfortable - the best of our trip! Closet area was spacious and there were plenty of convenient outlets. The stove in the room was also a nice touch on those cold nights. The bathroom was nice and open, with a beautiful copper tub and an indoor and outdoor shower. The tent also had a spacious deck with a hammock, chairs, and a sofa. Elephants came right up to our tent! Food was excellent. Simple, quality meals with lots of variety. We loved the breakfasts by the campfire and the boma dinners. Sundowners in different locations were so nice. All of the snacks prepared for high tea, sundowners, coffee/tea breaks were delicious and rotated every day. This was a truly exceptional camp and we very fond memories from our 3 nights here. We left with a love of Zimbabwe and a lot of respect for the ABC portfolio. We can't wait to visit their other camps in the future!
