Charming and intimate, Little Makalolo's location in the south-east of Hwange lends it a sense of seclusion and remoteness. Nestled into the treeline, the camp overlooks a productive waterhole that draws large numbers of wildlife, observed up close from the log-pile hide. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe and zebra are regular visitors, while special sightings include sable, roan and eland. The area is best explored on game drives and guided walks, with special extras like an unexpected pizza or a night spent under the stars on the Madison Pan star-bed platform. • 6 tents (1 family) • game drives • nature walks • Madison Pan star-bed • log-pile hide • village visits

Four of us (two couples), stayed at 5 different lodges across Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia, with 2 or 3 nights at each destination and generally small plane flights in between. Little Makalolo was our first camp for 3 nights, and by the end of the trip we concluded it was also the best. A couple of key reasons. Firstly the close proximity of the camp to grazing animals in big herds (especially elephants), in a totally open environment where because of the adjacent waterhole they would visit throughout the day and night. Secondly the 7 tents were a great number- not too many but enough to facilitate a nice social atmosphere every day morning and night as new people arrived or new friends left us. Thirdly because the Wilderness concession with Makalolo and Linkwasha is directly attached to Hwange National Park with no fence between them (not the same as our Etosha experience) the variety and scope of wandering & migrating animals was that much greater. The wide open plains near the camp were stunning in the early morning and late evening light
and our guide Charles was fantastic. We encountered a double buffalo kill by a pride of 7 lions within 20 minutes of leaving the airstrip! Would not hesitate to return again.

Little Makalolo camp is a beautiful, rustic, and quaint property with only six luxury tents. Our tent (Number 4) had this gorgeous rustic feel like you were camping in the early 1900’s. The copper sinks were absolutely stunning, and the beds were so comfortable, especially on the colder winter nights.

The camp team headed up by Tino were fun and friendly. The food was fabulous, and the chocolate peanut butter tart we had at dinner one night was to die for. Every night after dinner we enjoyed that the camp personnel and the guests could sit around the campfire and share stories and get to know one another.

The watering hole (perfect view from our tent) was fantastic spot to watch animals of all kinds. There is also a hideout built ten feet from the watering hole. One of the highlights of our stay was watching herds of elephants over a 2 hour period come to the watering hole to drink, mud themselves, play and then move a short distance away and dust themselves. It was one of the most amazing things my wife and I have ever seen.

Charles, our driver and guide, was awesome. His wonderful smile brightened our day and his skills to find not only the common sighting of animals but the unusual was tremendous. An example was seeing ten lions sunning themselves in the morning to the same pride eating a recently killed zebra 8 hours later as we sat 20 feet from the pride.

Little Makalolo did not disappoint. If you want a small, rustic camp this one should be on your list.

Little Makalolo was simply magical. The accommodations were luxurious. Our guide, Ferei (spelling?), was extremely knowledgeable and a joy to get to know. The entire staff was beyond attentive. We were spoiled rotten the entire stay. And the animals!!!!! I was worried we wouldn’t see as many given the season that we went but I could not have been more wrong. It was a dream come true. We saw every animal we hoped we would and then some. Also, do not expect to ever be hungry while at camp. The food is gourmet and plentiful! They literally feed you exquisite meals, teas, and snacks 6 times a day. I would recommend this haven to everyone.

Thank you Jstevens04 for sharing your beautiful review with us and we hope you will return to us soon to make many more wonderful memories together. Hwange’s mix of different veld and landscape types means that game viewing is productive year-round. Wildlife frequently encountered in our area includes lion, large herds of elephant, buffalo, cheetah, leopard, spotted hyaena, giraffe, sable, blue wildebeest, impala, waterbuck and reedbuck. In summer, wildebeest, zebra and eland are found in abundance on the open plains, while in winter elephant congregate in enormous numbers around the waterholes. Birdlife in the area is prolific (400+) and varied. we will be sure to pass along your kind words to all our great staff in camp. Thank you again Wilderness Safaris

Our 6th return to this intimate little camp is proof of how amazing and magical it is. It is one of the most charming safari camps one can imagine.
Absolutely everything was perfect as we have come to expect over the years.
Thanks Natalie,Tino ans Shumi for your hospitality and meeting every need. also thanks to our great guide, Leo for all the effort to show us as much as possible. The waiters Neoton, Mpeki, musa and Present spoiled us as usual. Chef bennet's food was excellent as always !
This part of Hwange NP is truely the most game rich and diverse area. The concession is so big that one can spend at least 4 or more days here.
Little Makalolo is conveniently set in the centre of the concession, so game drives can go any direction easily.
One can actually spend the whole day at the glorious pool, watching as game frequents the waterhole just in front of camp. Or sit in the log pile and have that extra close encounter. Elephants come right up to the pool to drink to everybody's delight. All sorts of species use the waterhole on a daily basis.
We cannot wait to return to Little Mak !!

We are very proud of our staff and cannot wait to pass on your kind words to everyone in camp. We were told that Little Makalolo was going to be amazing ... and we were not disappointed. From the game viewing, to the delicious food, amazing guides, and kind staff, we had an absolutely wonderful time. We were able to see so much on our daily game drives, then return to delicious food waiting for us, all before enjoying our comfortable accommodations before doing it all over again. Highly recommend a visit to Little Makalolo - but beware! It will spoil you!!

Please read my review of Linkwasha Camp for tips as we have just been to both camps and there are important tips regarding travel due to Covid.
Litle Mak ,as it is lovingly known, is an intimate small camp with comfy tents and excellent food ! Gameviewing is the best in Hwange due to Wilderness Safaris exceptional concession as I describe in the other review.
Elias, our guide was outstanding and has many years of experience. Once again we have become used to the best guides that Wiilderness have.
Thanks to Jabu and Neuton our waiters and the chefs whose names I did not get, sorry ! The food was exquisite ! Thanks too to Edwin and Rejoice and the whole team for taking care of absolutely everything and making our 5th stay just so enjoyable !
God bless all at Little Mak and we cannot wait to return !

Thank you for your amazing review and recommendations. We are delighted to see how much you enjoyed your stay with us in the wonderful Hwange National Park. We will be sure to share your kind regards with Elias and all the great staff in camp. One of the most important aspects of a guest’s journey is making sure that their guide is the best he can possibly be, both on a professional (knowledge) basis as well as being able to easily reach the guests on a personal level. We make sure that our guides understand this and strive towards achieving this balance as it is often a guest’s interaction with their guide that can make or break a journey. We look forward to welcoming you back very soon again.

Little Mak is actually surreal. Our safari camp experience was magical. We saw lions, elephants, cheetahs (brothers), hippos, giraffes, zebra, buffalo, wild dogs and tons of other animals. We even witnessed a pride of lions take down a buffalo :( . But what brought happy tears to my eyes was was the pack of wild dogs. Our AMAZING and BRILLIANT guide Leo and the rest of the staff knew about my wild dog obsession, and they helped make it happen. The property is in the middle of Hwange National Park and provides an intimate adventure, as there are only 6 tents. The camp site is beautiful and many of the animals come for a visit. Hwange is magnificent and serene, and the tents provide the "glamping" experience, The staff is beyond amazing, warm and inviting, and the food is delicious and creative. This is an experience we will never forget. In order to get there we had to take a very small commuter plane, and we landed in the middle of Hwange, where our amazing guide Leo met us. Wilderness has a tent there for arrivals. It is something to experience.

We went to Davisons camp three years ago and we just spent 4 nights at Little Makalolo lodge and as usual with Wilderness safari, we have been spoiled with amazing service, food and so nice people. Thank you very much to all the staff for having made our stay unforgettable.

Our game drives were amazing and we got real lucky to see all we have seen, cheetah, lioness with their cubs, elephants, girafes, buffaloes… just everything.

Strongly recommend it and will definitely go back with Wilderness safari who is not only giving you a life changing journey but also cooperate with local communities which i find very good.

Great job, love it

My first visit to Africa and I certainly hope won’t be my last! Little Makalolo was the last stop visiting IFAW projects in Zimbabwe and I’m thankful it was our longest stay at 4 nights, as I did not want to leave. Unfortunately, I don’t have words to adequately describe the profound impact and experience this had on my heart and soul, thanks to the incredible people at Wilderness who welcomed us with smiles and open arms.
The morning and evening drives with Liberty, our knowledgeable, experienced, and extremely personable guide, left elephant, lioness, Oryx, cheetah, zebra, impala, kudo, springbok, black-backed jackal, and hyena footprints on my heart. Suffice it to say, I left a piece of me in Hwange.
The staff at Little Makalolo were fabulous - welcomed by Valentine or Cathy after each arrival back at camp, along with a flurry of lovely team members (sorry that there are too many to name!) preparing and serving delicious meals all made the adventure memorable. Not to mention the absolutely fabulous birthday cake, along with their beautiful song and dance made this team stand out.
Meeting Wilderness Regional Director Graham and his deputy Nigel now have me stalking the Wilderness site for a job.
I cried when I left and still get teary-eyed after 2 weeks back in the States. Needless to say, book a stay at Little Makalolo or Linkwasha and you’ll carry it in your heart the rest of your days on earth.

John asked a question Jun 2023
Is there WIFI available?
Answer from Wilderness
Johannesburg, South Africa
Yes, Wi-Fi is available in camp but is limited bandwidth.
Answer from Wilderness
Johannesburg, South Africa
Dear TacomaAnna, Little Makalolo operates on a combination of solar and generator power providing sufficient electricity at all times (if used sensibility). Sleep apnoea machines can be accommodated by arranging for a battery and an inverter to be placed in the room, however, we will need prior warning of this to have everything in place upon your arrival to camp. It is additionally worth noting that (similar to most Southern African power points) there are only 220V power points in camp, if you have an item that runs on 110V, you will need to bring the necessary converter and/or adapter. We would ask that you please contact your Travel Agent as soon as possible, advising them of such so that we can make the needed provisions. Thank you and we look forward to welcoming you to Little Mak soon. Wilderness Safaris
Answer from Oundle-Owls
Cambridgeshire
We got the light aircraft back to Vic Falls we had soft bags and they fitted in okay. I would ask Wilderness directly they should be able to answer your question fully. Other people had small hard cases. One idea is to ask your Vic Falls hotel if you can store your larger bags while your in Little Mak and just collect them as you pass through. We did this with our lodge. That said we did go back for a night before we got the flight home.
