We recently stayed at the African Elegance tented lodge for one night after a safari. What an amazing place. The tented accommodation is perfect for the a relaxing night, its far from living in a tent, more like clamping.

The food changes every evening and is of a very very high standard, served outside around the camp fire. Breakfast is the full spread and very tasty.

Although the pool is on the small side it is ideal for a cooling dip with a beer after a days safari.

Would defo go back if in the area again.

Many thanks to all the staff.

African Elegance Tented Lodge is signposted off the R565 road. The exit to take is about 1km north of the Sundown Ranch on the same side of the road. You have to turn off the road and drive down a reasonably good stone/dirt/sand track ( We had a Hyundai i20 small car which was fine ) for about 2.6km to get to the gate where a quick phone call to the owners will get you in. You are driving into the bush which can be a little disconcerting when you have just flown into a foreign country but don’t be put off.

Accommodation:
The lodge consists of 5 large safari tents pitched on raised decks with en suit bathrooms that include a toilet, sink and shower with stepping stones in the floor and some good African red sand between them (that was a surprise when I came out of the shower!) The tents are well spaced apart for privacy and they are all well hidden in the bush. They all have double beds, bed side tables, electric power, wardrobe etc and were very clean and comfortable. There is a large deck area outside with table and chairs where you can enjoy a cold drink as the sun goes down.

Communal Area:
At the centre of the camp is a large tent that includes a large dining table for the included breakfast, sofas, rocking chairs, books on the wildlife and all things Africa, tea and coffee making facilities (also have this in your tents) and the best bit being an infinity pool set into the deck outside with parasols and lounger chairs. The pool overlooks the bush where you can sit and watch the antelope, birds and whatever wildlife cares to visit.

The owners:
This lodge is a family run business run by a lovely husband and wife team (and increasingly their children, well just the oldest so far but give it a few years and the others will be helping too). It sits on the families 500 hectare game farm which has some Giraffe, Zebra, Warthogs, Antelope (one in particular being Nyala who were always to be seen in and around the lodge) and much more wildlife. I cannot express enough just how wonderful the hosts were during our stay. They have an enormous amount of experience of the bush and the wildlife and are happy to talk about it. For an extra fee they will arrange walking or birding safaris which we did not do but will next time. I think they can probably also arrange game drives into Pilansburg Game Park as well. Anton even took the trouble to send me some photos after we had left of a very noisy cricket that we were listening to one night.

Our Stay:
We were very lucky in that there were no others guests when we stayed so we had two nights in the lodge exclusively for us and it was absolutely fantastic. Just listening to the sounds of the bush whilst relaxing by the pool. Then all those stars at night, magic! I’am sure it would have been just as fab with other guests there as it is always great to meet other travellers.

Some practical Info:
1) This lodge is in the bush, there are dusty rock lined tracks to your tent and you will see all sorts of wildlife large and small (we saw lizards, spiders and a snake, antelope and Giraffe to name a few) so if you are a bit squeamish and like your modern luxuries then maybe this is not the place for you. But if you like a little bit of adventure and are interested in learning more about the bush and the wildlife in a comfortable and peaceful environment then go for it, you won’t be disappointed.
2) There is a large fridge in the communal area and my tip would be to take a few bottles of water and whatever your tipple might be, store them in the fridge as you are quite a few kms from the nearest store and this is the sort of place that needs a cold beer or glass of wine to .
3) As for lunch and dinner. There is a restaurant and bar in the Sundown Ranch just up the road. we tried the restaurant which was ok but nothing special. your best bet is a 15 min drive to Sun City where there are many very good restaurants to try out. The owners will sometimes offer to cook a Boma Braai for your evening meal depending on how many people there are. We took up their offer and were very happy that we did. For a very reasonable extra cost the owners cooked us one of the best steaks I have ever eaten, served with salad and pap and washed down with cold beers and wine all under the stars with the sounds of Africa in yours ears and the crackle of a good fire in front of you.

Hopefully I have sold this place to you. I visited with my wife and two children ( 9 and 14) in late March 2016 and we loved it. From here we moved on to a 5 star game lodge in Pilansburg and then a lovely hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg but this place was our favourite by far.

We just had the most lovely holiday here. The tents are clean, spacious and have everything you could need. The views are gorgeous and peaceful.
Anton was extremely hospitable and friendly, and C.F. was amazingly knowledgable and gave us some of the most incredible and unique game drives of our lives!
thank you for an unforgettable holiday, will definitely be back
Cannot recommend this place more.

The lodge itself is in a beautiful location with a true bush atmosphere.
The breakfast was excellent and served on the veranda by Song, who with his assistant, prepared the food. Indeed these two people were responsible for everything at the lodge. This was especially highlighted when on Christmas day they had to dig out and repair a broken water pipe in 35 deg heat.
No sign of the owners in four days other than a fleeting visit by Antun on our arrival. Granted it was Christmas but this a HOSPITALITY industry
The following comments are subjective and are meant to assist potential travelers and not merely to criticize.
1. The lodge is not clearly sign posted from the main road and entrance can be easily missed, as it was in our case without a GPS
Had to phone the owner to get clear directions. Even the locals at the pub, some eight kms away couldn't help !
2. Distance to the lodge is via a dirt road of approximately 3 Kms and could render access difficult if not impossible for a small vehicle after heavy rains.
3.The accommodation is clean and comfortable with the following drawbacks
a.The shower/toilet is accessed by means of 3 steep steps making it precarious for
elderly or infirm people.
b.The bathroom floor is mostly sand and I would recommend wearing slippers
to avoid carrying it back into the sleeping area.
4.A small fridge would be a blessing as although there are shared facilities in the
communal area it is not ideal having to go back and forth.
5.The five tents have access to a small swimming pool and veranda.
This was no problem for us but if all the occupants of the lodge wanted to avail
themselves of this facility at the same time.................not possible!
All in all a disappointing experience.

Spend a few perfect days in this well kept lodge in the lovely middle of nowhere. It's a 20 minute drive to Pilanesberg, a 10 minute drive from the mainroad. Signposting from the mainroad could use an upgrade, and google maps shows you the wrong sideroad. If driving in the direction of Pilanesberg, go left opposite the large mine entrance - at night very well lit. Here you will find the first of a few signs showing you to the lodge, following a dirt road (doable in a normal car).
Our tent was way more spacious and luxury than we've expected, with fan, a kettle and a lovely bathroom - 'normal' toilet, perfect shower and sink. Plenty of storage space, comfortable bed and lovely veranda. Lovely poolside too where breakfast was served, and great dinner at night with plenty of very tasty food (including lots of veggies next to the delicious meet) and cold wine and beer. Anton has great knowlodge of wildlife and stargazing and we really enjoyed our morning safari in Pilanesberg with him.
We were so happy we chose to stay here; close to Pilanesberg but not nearly as expensive as in the park itself and far away from the Sun City crowds.

A very dissapointing experience! I would not reccommend this venue to anybody seeking a comfortable stay with great service. The marketing does this venue more justice than it deserves. No lamp on our veranda, a battle to get to the shower through the curtain of moths in the bathroom, a massive, very noisy, almost industrial fan in the tent, no active and present service on site and poor management.

I feel bad about posting a poor review as the owners and staff were really friendly. The location was wonderful but the accommodation was, in our view, horrendous.

I read numerous reviews and checked out the publicity before booking and expected high quality, picturesque accommodation. Instead we had a very old, quite tatty tent with a ‘bathroom’ at the side open to all sorts of creatures that meant us checking the place out before venturing in.

Our ‘room’ had mouse droppings on the floor and lizards running around it. It was so bad that we only stayed for one night despite booking and paying for four.

If you want to be close to nature then this is for you but for us it turned out to be a very miserable and expensive experience. As I said, the owners Anton and his wife were wonderful but still feel that the place is misrepresented and I was slightly surprised that we weren’t offered any kind of rebate when I told him that we couldn’t stay more than one night.

We spent two nights here last week, and couldn't recommend it more. It's on the more rustic side of luxury, but that's what we wanted - the canvas palaces aren't our style.

The tents are very spacious and super comfortable; our one needed a few repairs here and there, but overall they're high quality units, with plenty of storage, a kettle and a much-appreciated fan. The shower is excellent, with very hot water and, to be honest, better pressure than I have in my bricks-and-mortar house at home. A fridge would be the icing on the cake, but it may be part of their future plans. There is bugger-all phone reception, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

The camp is run by Anton and his family, who couldn't have been more gracious hosts. The safari drive to Pilansberg with CF was fantastic - informative, moving, and even a little adrenaline-pumping! I'm still in awe of the fact he can name thousands of species in Afrikaans, English and even Latin. However, it was the walking safari with Anton at 5:30am that was a serious highlight of our overall trip. We learned so much from him, from the vital role of the tiny dung-beetle in the ecosystem, to the problem of rhino-poaching in SA. We were also able to walk up close to the giraffes, which was very special. It was a fascinating couple of hours, and I would highly, highly recommend booking both safaris if you're staying at the lodge.

We took a transfer to the camp, so were a little under prepared - I'd recommend future visitors bring water, or even just glasses (the camp's water is spring-sourced, and delicious, but it would help to have your own receptacle), and if you're fussy about your alcohol, perhaps pack a cooler. They have an honesty bar, but after one warm G&T with no ice or lemon, I stuck to the water ;)

The pool is a godsend during the hottest hours of the day, and it was lovely to just relax on the deck with a book in between the drives, or play with the resident puppy, Rex.

The best part of this camp is the brai at night: each evening we gathered around a fire with Anton, his lovely family, and the workers, chatting, shooting the breeze, and enjoying authentic SA food. The portions were generous, the flavours immense, and the conversation flowing.

Our only regret was not booking a third night.

We spent three nights at the lodge and it was one of the best stays on our tour.
The tent was really nice and comfy. While lying in bed we could hear some animals at night which was an unique experience. The staff was friendly and helpful.
Anton, the manager, is a really cool guy. We had a nice chat on our first night while having dinner around the campfire. We could ask him everything and learned a lot about wildlife. On our last day we went on a bush walk with him which was a highlight, too.
We can really recommend the tented lodge and would definitely book again. Thank you Anton+team for your great hospitality and for making our stay so special :)
