Selinda Explorers Camp is located in the 130,000-hectare Selinda Reserve of northern Botswana and is built on the banks of the Selinda Spillway, about one hour west of its sister camp, Selinda. This classic camp transports us back to the time of authentic safaris, but with a modern twist and hospitality. The camp’s focal point is the Bedouin-style main area consisting of a lounge and separate dining room. The four guest tents provide comfort and style but with a magnificently raw spirit. Subtly placed under the shade of the riverine forest, the camp is designed in the style of the early explorers both in philosophy and practice. Whiling away afternoons under the canopy of African ebony and Mopane trees, interspersed with walks and canoeing, make this a respite from the ‘daily grind’ of a traditional safari. Selinda Explorers Camp is an ideal property for those guests who want to experience Botswana’s extraordinary wildlife but in the most private setting. Selinda Explorers Camp is ideal for individual travellers, couples, families and small groups of up to eight guests sharing.

As others have mentioned, this is a special camp designed to replicate the experience (down to the original furnishings) of the early explorers. We were fortunate to have Oats as a guide, who seems especially attuned to nature and to the behavior of the animals, which he explains in unusually empathic ways.We all were amazed that when tracking animals he had an uncanny way of knowing exactly where they would be found at exactly the right moment We had too many experiences to detail them all here, but I will never forget the time he took us to a clearing in the woods, and the wild dogs, which had dispersed for the evening, gathered for their ceremonial greeting before the late afternoon hunt. The joy with which they came together was like nothing I have ever beheld. Oats

My husband and I have travelled to Africa a few times now and have done loads of safari’s in Sabi Sands, however this was our first time to Botswana and we were absolutely blown away by the experience we had at Selinda Explorers. From the moment we arrived on the airstrip we instantly felt at home. Our guide was Victor and he was absolutely phenomenal. Victor was the best guide we have had on safari. He is passionate about the animals, his knowledge is just incredible and he is also a photographer which means he always gave us the best vantage point for taking fantastic photos, not to mention has a very witty personality which meant he was just a pleasure to be on safari with. We hope to come across Victor again when we are next in Botswana. Our host was Lizzy – she was

A wonderful camp, only 4 tents. Fantastic view on Selinda Spillway. Elephants do come often here. The food and wine are fantastic, just like the staff. Only problem was our guide. Was a macho type, especially his bodylanguage . And he was always complaining about how hard it was to work there so long before returning home.... I know he had a lot of knowledge about wildlife but with another guide I'm sure our stay would be better. But for the camp: very good and a lot of wildlife. The wild dog pack is fantastic !

If you like the authentic bush experience this camp is the place to go. It's on the river bed but not having water all year around. Part of the experience is not having running water in the tent, but a great outdoor shower. Animals roam the camp during night making one feel being part of the bush. The camp design style is a mix of Africa-Morocco and very authentic. The staff was very with big smiles and food very good. The concession offers a large variety of small and big game and predators. Overall a very nice bush lodge.

After reading some of the other detailed reviews -especially of Indium49 in July there is nothing really more to add - We had Lizzie as our host and Vic as our guide. We have been to Africa and on safari many times before but this is our BEST safari experience ever - The location is so rich in wildlife and we were rewarded with intimate interactions with both packs of wild dogs which we have not seen since 2000. I echo Indium49s review about Vic being thoroughly awesome and Lizzie and the rest of the team were super friendly and accommodating ensuring we had the wildlife encounters we could only dream about - even seeing a shy civet cat which we have never seen previously :) We are very thankful that Roger from Safari Lifestyles recommended Selinda Explorers as one of the camps

My husband and I stayed there in September, this was certainly a highlight of our trip staying only two nights we managed to see so many animals and a large pride of Lions with cubs, this will be in our hearts for ever, Justine and Ross the managers, went out of their way to make us feel extremely comfortable, quite exclusive,Rooms were very special, amazing attention to detail with the furnishings. We couldn't get to our rooms after our drive one night, as there were two elephants on the walk way, just so real!! Parks was our guide, we were so lucky to have such a passionate and knowledgeable guide, would go back without hesitation

Selinda...the jewel in the crown. Just a wonderful experience from every angle. Camp and how it was so congenially run, the guide and spectacular wild life viewing. Turn a corner and there was something new. Accommodations rustic but lovely and they now have solar showers ! We paddled our own canoes down the river to a spectacular sundowner. Easily the highlight of our tour of Zimbabwe & Botswana.

Dear Linda. We are so happy to hear how much you enjoyed your time here with us and thank you for sharing your experience with others on Tripadvisor. It was wonderful to have both you and Roy in camp to share this wild space we call home with us and the animals. After all the great photo opportunities that presented themselves, we hope you managed to sort through your photos and find enough good ones for your Christmas cards this year. The wildlife has been fantastic but not more spectacular than the night skies under the new moon which can easily be enjoyed while you take advantage of our outdoor showers and indeed, we do now have solar showers. At the beginning of the year we moved from the bucket showers to a more conventional system. We pride ourselves on our energy efficiency in camp, relying mostly on solar to power the whole camp and with the wonderfully blue Botswana skies, this works incredibly well. We hope to see you along the spillway, amongst the tall mopanes, again soon. Ross, Justine, Parks and the rest of your Explorers family.

We visited Botswana in Aug of this year...we had a five camp tour. Selinda Explorers Camp came highly recommended, it was the least lavish of the camps we stayed at...yet still very comfortable. It ended up being our favourite camp, lets face it the reason most of us are at these camps is for game viewing.....this place produced some of the most memorable sightings we experienced in Botswana...wild dogs denning, with 15 pups, leopards up in trees, male leopard on the prowl, pride of lions on an elephant kill (it was killed by another bull elephant), honey badger....so I would consider this a hot place for high value wildlife sightings. Our guide PARKS, was one of the top guides we encountered on this trip....he got us and delivered!....example....the ride to the camp from the

Dear Karen and Rob Thank you so much for your fantastic review, Parks can be very proud of all the wonderful things you’ve said about him. He works hard to deliver sightings by anticipating animal movements and behaviour, by positioning the vehicle for quality photographs, by providing adventurous or serene experiences and by imparting his vast knowledge to all those lucky enough to spend time with him. Although we agree that the priority for most guests visiting this part of the world are the animals, we would hate to assume that this is true for everyone so when you arrive at Explorers we encourage you to chat to your guide or managers about how you would like to spend your time with us. We don’t have a set routine and each day we work around what nature has to offer which at this time of year, like you said are “high value wildlife sightings”. Good news is that the dogs continue to do well and so far all the puppies have survived which is brilliant for the population of dogs in this area and for their conservation across the continent. Unfortunately you just didn’t have enough time to get the hippo photos you were after but it’s a great excuse to come back. Parks and the rest of the Explorers team

Selinda was our first safari experience. We were with two other couples (Aussies). Absolutely loved it. Loved the tents on the ground, not on stilts. Loved the Spillway, especially the canoe trip. Justine & Ross were very friendly & helpful. Excellent guiding by Parks - including an "edgy" on-foot experience; and in the canoe - "full-court-press" from 6 hippos! Food was great,as was the service (maitre d' - John). Woken at 5am by male lions roaring nearby. Woken at 3am next night by elephants in the camp. We only stayed 2 nights - should have stayed longer!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write about how much you loved your stay. Our tents on the ground under the tall mopanes and sausage trees with the spillway winding its way nearby provide the perfect opportunity to really connect with nature, to hear all the sounds of the bush and to feel what it must have been like for the famous explorers travelling these areas many, many years ago. We will definitely pass your kind words onto Parks, it’s not every guide who can inspire enough confidence to get you to walk into an area with lots of vultures and a very suspicious smell, especially after being woken by lions in the early hours of the morning. That’s the thrill of a safari at Selinda Explorers - not just game drives, but the chance to be on foot and on the water in this wonderfully wild space that we share with very few other people and lots of wildlife. Hopefully your feeling that 2 nights just wasn’t long enough means that next time will be longer, we look forward to it! Ross, Justine, Parks, Joe and the rest of the Explorers Team

Real safari because your accommodation (substantial tent) is on the ground - not up on stilts and as such you feel like you are "in the jungle" when elephants come feeding at night. However the quality of hospitality, attention to detail and food does smack of glamping. Loved this place. Stayed 2 nights with 2 other couples so we basically had 80% of the accommodation (4 tents all the same). Tents are adequate for purpose - not overly large but then you are only in them to sleep. Loved the outdoor shower and toilet (attached like en-suite) but must admit that I "held on" one night when elephants were about 10 yards (8 metres) from our tent (at 2.30am) breaking trees and generally making much noise - that's what you go to Africa for!! All the staff were great. Justine and

Thank you so much! Reading about how much you loved your time here with us was a wonderful way to start our week. Indeed, 2 nights do seem to pass too quickly, especially when there is so much to see, so much to be discovered and such a variety of ways to explore this vast, 320 000 acre Selinda Reserve. The dry season combined with the greening up of the spillway continues to deliver good game viewing but you were indeed very lucky with the cheetah sighting as that male has since crossed the spillway and unfortunately hasn’t been seen for about 3 weeks. That said, we never know when he will return, that’s the beauty of this wild, pristine ecosystem - all the animals are completely free. We couldn’t agree with you more that the tents really allow you to connect with the African bush or with your statement that canoeing from camp is a must. It is certainly one of the most unique, captivating and serene ways to game view! Well, serene, until you get to the hippo pool and like you mentioned all the beady eyes turn in your direction, amazing to be able to share the water with such incredible animals. We hope to see you for another, longer, safari on the spillway soon! Ross, Justine, Parks and the rest of your Explorers family
