Hands down the best holiday I have ever been on. If you’re considering a horse back safari this is the place to go. The team are just fantastic, the riding and game is simply incredible and the camp itself was just the best. I’m already planning my next visit!

We went during the dry season (apparently it’s best to go when the delta is flooded) but we had the best time and saw so much wildlife (including an amazing experience with a leopard) and the riding in general was incredible. Our guides Bernie and Chief were so knowledgeable and at no point did we ever feel unsafe despite us getting close to elephants and other large game. The horses at the camp are so well looked after and cared for and we loved the ones we were given to ride during our stay.

The camp itself was one of the highlights and being able to completely disconnect from the outside world. The food served was delicious, from breakfast through until our three course dinner - it’s hard to belief such amazing fresh food is cooked up in such a remote location every day. The tent was super comfortable from the bed to the hot shower and I loved having tea every morning in bed while looking out at the bush - something that will stay with me for a long time.

Nothing is too much for the team at the camp and I can’t wait to go back with friends and family (even non riders as there’s still plenty for them to do and see)

We visited in November 2019. This was or first time in Africa and our first safari, let alone s horseback one.

What a fantastic experience, from our first ride out to our last.

Being able to get so code to elephants, giraffes, hippos, zebra, eland, ekudu, Reed buck, bush buck, hyenas and lions, yes lions.

Accommodation was great, food was brilliant.

I could go on and on, but I won't.

Horses were well cared for, impeccably trained and new all the hand signals from Thabo, our guide.

I could go on and on

It was the most wonderful holiday - the attention to detail was excellent and nothing was too much trouble.
Macatoo is in a remote setting and wonderful not to see anyone who was not part of our camp.
The horses were well cared for and responsive - some really very forward going! The team did their utmost to match horses and riders and I'll never forget some of the early morning rides cantering through the water with buffallo running alongside.
Fantastic and I'd strongly recommend the camp to other riders.
Their literature says that they can cater for non-riders. I'm not sure that there would be enough to do as a non-rider.

Just a quick note to reach out and see if there are others out there having there deposits withheld . With Covid we , the customer didn’t cancel. They the operator didn’t lose any business as no one unfortunately was able to travel.
Why take our money ? Admin fee sure, most operators refund 30-60 days out approx 70% refund . Our tour operator tells us Macatoo will with hold 100% .
Any ideas , opinions appreciated

Do not recommend it
Service and accommodations not what they advertised.
Felt that they only like to cater to certain types of clientele even though they reach out to all types of guests. The country it self (Botswana) is beautiful. I would recommend other camps.

What a way to relax and unwind. Every member of the operation calm, polite , always with a smile on their face. The horses I rode were fit and well mannered and appeared to enjoy everything that was asked of them. Sue, being unable to ride at this time, with the guidance of Clever enjoyed her daily trips on the delta. Her photographic ability improved remarkably. The joy of both of us being able to tell each other our tales of the day. The company was wonderful, great when you all have a common interest - horse riding and wild life in their natural habitat. Sleeping under canvas and dining alfresco seals it. Looking forward to returning before we are 70! R and S Wiltshire. THANKYOU.

What a great place. I went for the riding and it was brilliant. Fit, well kept, happy and balanced horses looked after by friendly and knowlegable staff. I travelled on my own but never felt lonely or in any way awkward. The accommodation was really comfortable and the food and wine excellent. I rode out every day in a small group with two excellent guides; we saw elephants, cantered alongside Giraffes and Zebra jumped logs, went at speed through the bush and generally had the most wonderful experience. Surprise lunches in the bush, candlelit dinners with good food and good company and (on one occasion) an elephant sleeping all night outside my tent! I am not sure that it would suit non-riders and you need to be fairly confident and competent to get the best out of the riding. I am now booking to return! Botswana is the best and Macatoo Camp is at the top of things.

Fantastic place, warm friendly people and a place to have fun. Delicious food and plenty of g&t's!
The riding is fast in the morning and slow in the afternoon. A trip to the island for a night is a must.
Lots of game viewings, elephant, hippo and giraffe are plentiful. Chance to see more by vehicle and makoros.
I would say of the riding safaris I've done that you need to be a more experienced rider here because of the terrain and speed of the morning rides although I'm sure that if a group of less experienced riders went together then it would be tailored to them.
I highly recommend the camp in all ways.

I had extremely high expectations of Macatoo Camp and they were all exceeded! The setting, the horses, the game and the staff were all fantastic! Cantering with Giraffes and Zebra through the water is an experience I will remember forever! The guides are exceptionally knowledgeable and the horses were forward going, responsive, extremely fit and well cared for. Nothing was too much trouble and the staff went above and beyond to make it a special experience with surprise lunches, endless supplies of champagne, home-made cakes, delicious food, treehouse experiences and entertaining conversation.

I stayed in tent 8 which is the furthest from the "mess tent" i enjoyed the privacy and my outside shower! The facilities are really fantastic - "glamping" at it's very best with running water, sink, flushing toillet and super comfy double bed (with hot water bottles in the evening).

The horse team made sure I was always happy with the horse I was riding - I fell in love with Mombo a beautiful youngster and they made sure I rode him as often as he was able to work!

All in all - absolutely fantastic! I was apprehensive about travelling solo to such a remote region, but it was the best thing I have ever done - if you are considering this - JUST GO!!! You won't regret it!

I chose to spend 5 days at Macatoo for my 50th birthday. It was a trip of a lifetime, the horses are superb, the guides excellent, the hospitality warm, the tents comfortable, and the rides... the rides are exhilarating and unforgetable.

A rough estimate for a 7-night riding safari in peak season in 2018 would be £4875 per person sharing, and yes we have various different packages. All the packages are fully inclusive of all accommodation, meals and activities and generally, your charter flights from Maun to Macatoo camp is also included. Feel free to visit our website for more details. Kind regards, Riana

Answer from Walter B

Hi Les, stayed there dec.1999 - jan.2000 over the millenium change. During the 10 days of my horseback safari I felt no single drop of rain, but noon temperatures of up to +50°C, acc. to our guide. I got sunstroke one day, although I lived at the French Riviera then and was used to sun. Wear a broad brimmed hat when at Macatoo. Riding helmet is not necessary since one rides on sand, the bottom of the Okavango. The grounds were fairly dry then although we galloped parts through flooded grass. This stay was a "once in a lifetime", however I am checking right now how to get back there. But I am about 76 and riding would be too dangerous for me. I know. My late fiancee fell of her horse during a jump and broke her neck. She became 63 years of age. Enjoy life and a horseback safari at Macatoo as long as you can ! Walter, Berlin
