Wow. Where to start?
Every aspect of this lodge exceeded my expectations- from the warm welcome the very moment we got off the light aircraft, to the meticulously prepared food, to the hospitality and goodwill of every staff member, and to our guide’s expertise and passion. Overall, the lodge had a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere thanks to the incredible team managing it.

The lodge:
the common area has multiple decks with a fantastic view of the grassland. The dining area is a big shared space around a large long wooden table. The tented lodges themselves have a classic vintage feel to them, and are spacious and very well finished, with a big bathroom and a spacious shower. There is a guest laptop with internet access.
Kanana has an outdoor deck situated 30 minutes from the actual camp- which gives you the option of sleeping under the stars with a view on the wilderness. However, we had the unfortunate experience of having mosquitos find a way to enter through the net by flying from under the crevices in the floor boards. The camp manager assured us he would look into a solution for the next guests, so it probably is a non issue by now.

The food:
I found Kanana to have the best quality food out of the three reserves I visited in Botswana. I loved the Botswanan delicacies (Star squash with maize, polenta, pulled beef) which were served for dinner. During tea time, the cook always always surprised us with home made treats and lemonades. One of the most memorable experiences was an open air buffet we had in the middle of the savannah with all the other guests, right in the middle of our safari.

The safaris:
Our guide, Siu, was wonderful and knowledgeable.
Kanana is ruled by a pride of 16 lions, and we saw them on an almost daily basis during our four days here. As this is a private concession, off roading is allowed, which helps the guide have more control over tracking wild animals. Encountered elephants, giraffes, antelopes, hyenas, jackals, warthogs. We saw a great biodiversity of birds as well.
Lots of activities were on offer too, including walking safaris, night drives, mokoro and fishing. We did both night drives and fishing- the latter which was particularly thrilling. To be in the same water as hippos and crocodiles was exhilarating. We ended up with a catch of over twenty fish.

We spent 3 nights at Kanana at the beginning of our honeymoon, then transferred to a Ker & Downey sister camp, Shinde, for 3 more nights. Even in the dry season, Kanana was beyond superb. It was our favorite of the two camps, but only in tiny ways.

We mostly did land activities, which were great, plus the mokoro to the heronry which was breathtaking! We saw unbelievable wildlife, day and night. Our guide Robi was more than a guide: he felt like our old friend, showing us around his home. Just the three of us watching the sunset felt so comfortable.

We spent one night on the sleep-out deck, which was indescribable. The stars, the sounds, the breeze... if the goal of safari is to make humans feel their place in the cycle of creation, nothing does it like spending a night in the Okavango with nothing but a mosquito net between you and the wild.

We loved that they served Botswanian food, not European. So delicious. The 24/7 solar power and green water treatment system were much appreciated. But as everyone says, the staff are what make a place unforgettable. They were so kind and genuine and welcoming of everyone, including us, an interracial gay American couple on our honeymoon.

We spent three nights here and had a wonderful time. Our guide Robbie was excellent - his wealth of knowledge and love for animals made every game drive worthwhile. We enjoyed visiting the same lion and leopard families on a few separate occasions, as we learned more about their behavior seeing them under different conditions. One morning, we came across a lioness and her cubs sharing a kill; the next day, we observed them resting in their den and climbing trees.

We'd hoped, but weren't expecting, to see rhinos; we were thrilled when Robbie and his team found us a pair and got us to them in time to watch for a while before they trotted away into a neighboring concession. We also saw wild dogs, hippos, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, wildebeest, buffalo, elephants, impala, red lechwe, tsessebe, baboons, monkeys, and so many birds, including marabou storks nesting in the heronry. We had worried that it would be inaccessible because of the dry conditions, but there was just enough water to get there. We had a great mokoro ride with Buno, who shared a ton of knowledge about the waters of the Delta. We also did a bush walk, which was awesome - it was so nice to explore the land from outside the safari vehicles.

The food was excellent, our tent was great, and the staff were friendly and professional. We really couldn't have asked for more.

My husband and I were finally able to enjoy our belated honeymoon in June, and we're so grateful we could go to Africa for a safari! We spent 4 nights here at Kanana Camp in Botswana's Okavango Delta and it was seriously magical. You are completely in the middle of the Delta and it's you and the wildlife. The camp itself blends beautifully into nature, while still feeling luxurious. The tents are definitely more like "glamping" than actually being in tents, which suited us! We really enjoyed the food - everything was delicious and also authentic to the local cuisines. The staff were so warm and made the stay really relaxing, and our game drive guide was extremely knowledgeable. A real expert tracker!

The game drives were of course the highlight of this trip. The Delta itself is stunning, and on each drive you'll see a good amount of action whether it be hippos, giraffes, elephant, etc. The highlight for us were the pride of lion that typically spent time near the camp. Incredible seeing them each day and really getting a sense of their patterns and lifestyle. Unbelievable how close we could get to them - blew our minds! Being on the Delta, we also enjoyed some boat rides which was a nice change up from the game drives. You could see things from a totally different perspective when on the boat, and get much closer to hippos and crocodiles!

We went in early June which is the beginning of winter in Botswana. The weather changes are dramatic, so in the early morning when you first go out for drives it is quite cold, and then by midday very warm. LAYERS are the key! I wouldve never imagined we'd be in puffy jackets in June, but they were a lifesaver, seriously. Dress warm and layer up, and you'll be in great shape.

My husband and I along with our daughter and son in law spent three wonderful nights at Kanana as part of a safari trip to Botswana in early May. Our guide Lukas was an expert and a delight to spend 10 hours a day with. We saw literally hundreds of animals. To say this was a life changing experience would be an understatement. The lodge was beautiful and well kept with every detail attended to daily. The food was excellent and the staff very attentive to every need. Other reviews reference spotty wifi however it was more than adequate for sending a quick note home. If you are going to be dependent on wifi during a trip like this you should probably be doing something else and do a safari some other time. This is an all consuming experience that needs your full attention! We recommend the sleep out on the platform about 10 km from the camp! Thanks to all at Kanana, especially Lukas, for a fantastic experience!

It was our first trip to Africa and two nights at Kanana was not enough- we should have booked 3 minimum! Ker & Downey really know there stuff and we will definitely seek them out for future trips.
We arrived hot and flustered to smiles, songs and cold flannels.
Our tent was out of this world and full of lovely surprises like hot water bottles placed in the bed at night.
Food was great and the guides join the main table where you can find out more about the culture and wildlife of Botswana.
On our last night we were guided to a romantic table for two with a bottle of champagne to celebrate my husband’s 60th birthday which was a really lovely surprise.
Out guide, OT was an incredibly skilled tracker and really knows his stuff from birds to big cats, we enjoyed every drive. The mornings were very chilly and we were given hot water bottles and rugs which kept us toasty and warm.
The sundowners were a highlight and a wonderful surprise.
A further surprise was a Ker & Downey rep at Maun airport who helped us through the check in procedure, you really do feel looked after from start to finish.

Stayed here for 3 nights at the end of our trip to Botswana. The 'tent' was very comfortable with a lovely view over the grasslands . Once the the flood water arrives this would be underwater. The staff were always on hand and very helpful. The food was very good and plentiful. Our guide Samson was excellent and we saw masses of game, including a leopard with a kill on our first day there. The mokoro boat trip was an amazing experience. The night spent in the tree house under the stars was another experience not to be missed. You do need to book this ahead of your visit.

Our stay was wonderful. The rooms are very nice and the service is great. Food is good - You definitely won’t go hungry! In December the water was low and so there wasn’t any for the animals to come in front of the rooms but it didn’t matter. We saw all types of animals and dozens and dozens of gorgeous birds. Our guide Baams was an amazing tracker and told us so much about the animals.

We just returned from our 3 night stay at Kanana. We saw leopards, lions, and cheetahs along with a lot of other animals. The early morning coffee, tea times and sundowners stops and all the meals and drinks were so fun. It is a very special place. The rooms are very pretty and they do all your laundry. You need to fly in to this beautiful area. I highly recommend this place.

We spent 3 nights at Kanana. The camp is well situated with our tent overlooking the plains and floodplain where we watched elephants, buffalo, and Red Lechwe. The staff and food were great and were attentive to all of our needs. Sue, our guide for our stay was amazing. Sue was really attentive to detail, knowledgeable, easy going, and really shared with us the wonders of the Delta and its animals - including many sightings of leopards and lions and over 100 bird species. Tumi, our mokoro guide was super. A memorable stay - thank you!

Maun, Botswana
Thank you for your question. You could fly from OR Tambo (JNB Airport) to Maun, Botswana. Both Airlink and Air Botswana fly daily. Hope this helps and answers your question.

Do the tents have hair dryers?
Maun, Botswana
Thanks for the question. We do have hairdryers in camp, if you would like to ask the managers on arrival they will deliver on to your tent. Thanks.
