What a disappointment!!! If you are camping, stay away. In January 2022 we made reservations for 3 couples (3 caravans) at Big 5 Chobe. Upon arrival, we were horrified to see the state in which the camping sites were. The ablutions were rickety, the ground was covered in wild shrubs & weeds. It was obvious that nothing towards the upkeep was done to the campsites. We turned around & went to Senyati.

I will start with the positives - the chalets are just as you see in the pictures, possibly nicer. The reception area looks nice and the aircon works well. There is a kettle and miniatures. The cleaning staff were very friendly and the general grounds staff too. This is good. I have to preface this by saying we went in low season and, at one point, were the only guests there so it may not have been business as usual. Firstly, the receptionists seemed very detached and indifferent. The kitchen staff were also a little spaced out. The food was really not good at all but this may be because it was low season. The worst thing for me was that on the map it looks like this is close to restaurants (Nandos etc.) It is not. There is no restaurant nearby so you are forced to eat at the hotel. A taxi costs 3 dollars each way (to town.) There is a supermarket in a weird shopping centre called the Duncan Plaza about a 12 minute, not so pleasant, walk away. I found the supermarket expensive. Also, hotels and lodges here are super expensive. We paid 111 Dollars per night for this and price/quality ratio was so off. If I had paid, say 70 Dollars I would maybe have had lower expectations. Chobe is nice but Kasane itself is nothing to write home about. If I were to do this again I would have done 1 night, 2 at maximum.

Reception staff quite friendly here compared to other experiences in the area. Breakfast was nice. It was good to have our own living space - verandah outside the chalet. Chalet was well sized room with en-suite - quite clean. You can’t park the truck directly outside the room which is just a bit of a faff. Swimming pool wasn’t clean so we didn’t use it. As is common it seems Southern Africa, there were twin beds that could be pushed together - you don’t really want single beds and individual mosquito nets on your honeymoon but that seems to be the norm! There is a strange smell about the place especially at night like burning rubbish? There is a potential for noisy guests in neighbouring chalets. There is a guard at the gate which is helpful as it is reasonably close to town. Chobe river Boat cruise organised by the lodge was awesome and one of the best things we’ve done. The guide was keen to teach us about the wildlife and area, and even gave us a special bonus on the way home stopping by a hyena den.

This establishment is set in one of the most beautiful parts of the world! The views are fantastic, The lodges are neat and the linen and towels are of an exceptional quality. The staff is friendly and very helpful. Game drives and day trips to Vic falls can easily be arranged via the hotel. Breakfast is exceptional. Love love love!!

I had read a few not great reviews about this hotel so when we arrived we were pleasantly surprised. Location is perfect, you can literally hear and see hippos while you dine in the restaurant. There is aircon in all the rooms, which we were so grateful for as temperatures can get high. Breakfast was good with all the basics available as buffet. Reception stuff was very helpful. The waiters/servers need more training as some simple requests were not understood immediately. If you are a pedantic person maybe this hotel is not for you. All in all a good stay.

The Lodge itself is situated on the Chobe river with beautiful views. However the camping sites are at the back of the Lodge and very sandy with very little trees for shade. The private ablutions for each camping site is well laid out and spacious. As far as the service is concerned, we found the staff generally lacked knowledge, training and experience. Especially in the restaurant we found them bordering on being unfriendly. The hotel also offers a river cruise and once again, although our guide was extremely friendly and helpful - he battled to converse in English. This lodge's camping site fees was quite a bit higher than the other sites we camped at.

The service is very poor, the staff is keeping the food inside the kitchen and they pretend they run out of various items during breakfast, even if we have paid for it. The water is not available during breakfast before 9am and even after this the water is available only if the barman is awake and of course, not for free. Every morning we need to ask for simple things to be supplied with, otherwise missing completely (from cheese or honey during the breakfast until hand soap at the bathroom) The place is excellent located, along the Chobe river, but extremely poor managed. The restaurant is very dirty, but they practiced market prices like any other 5* hotel. A poor dinner cost 220 Bwp, while at Mowana Lodge it costs 265Bwp or at Marina 290, but the last ones really serve 4-5* dinner buffet. A dinner cruise cost 350 BWP (and they don’t offer anything included-i.e. water), while in other places (Flame of Africa) is 20-30 BWP cheaper and you can get juices, water and snacks included . Same for the game drives. We missed the last morning game drive because they had no clients interested (we were not too many to arrange for a booking) A mistake for us to stay here, luckily we went out to arrange our program with different suppliers from Kasane. When in trouble, we highly recommend Banda from Tropical Tours or Flame of Africa in Kasane

Location is Perfect just lacks management. Golden opportunity wasted. The rooms are lovely, the view is perfect but the staff we found to be lacking. The food was poor! Dinner is served on the patio with hardly any light to read what's on the menu. We found the food to be very expensive and quality and presentation poor. Such a pity as this can be a beautiful lodge.

We stayed in the Camp Site at Big 5 Chobe Lodge in Kasane. There is no 5 five at the Lodge and in fact you won’t see any animals except for birds. We booked a Chobe River Safari through the Lodge which I would recommend to all visitors. The animals you will see along the River is amazing. Our second excursion was also booked through the Lodge and it was to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. It is a day trip starting at the border about 5 minutes from the Lodge and then 80km by road until you reach the little town of Victoria. The little town is well maintained and our visit to Victoria Falls Hotel from where you have a beautiful view of the “smoke that thunders” of the falls is impressive. On our way to the falls we also stopped at the big baobab tree. The Vic Falls is really impressive and a definite must visit. The Zambezi River was in full flood with 260 million liters of water per second falling over the 1.7km edge of the falls into the gorge 108m below. Once back at Big 5 Chobe Lodge camp we settled into our campsite for a relaxing evening. The noise from the adjacent residential area wasn’t great and you would hear barking dogs and goats with bells around their necks the entire evening. Good staff at the campsite was extremely friendly.
