What a lovely surprise the Bokwagtershuisie was at the end of short mountain pass! Peace and quiet, beautiful views and everything inside to make it a chilled and cozy stay. It was a freezing time of year but no issue with a huge hearth slash braai, plus fireplace. Very well appointed kitchen with 2 fridges, washing machine and dishwasher. Loved the charming decor. We also went for a stroll along the river and would love to explore more hiking routes next time. The braai area at the river looks really welcoming - plus there is a canoe to meander down the river. Will definitely return in warmer weather. Thank you for an unforgettable stay!

We stayed in Bokwagtershuisie. It was like being back in our gransparents' house, bringing with it such good childhood memories. A truly tranquil experience. The house had everything we needed and more. I enjoyed the library and other books regarding the history of the surrounding areas. Very interesting. We loved walking in the succulent garden adjoining our house. The picnic area on the banks of the Gamka River was beautiful and well kept. We plan to come back in June, bringing family with. Then we will enjoy an indoor fire against the cold.

We loved Matjiesvlei Cottages. The house we stayed in, called Die Stalle, was lovingly decorated with old world charm, cool rooms, comfy chairs, large lounge and dining area, insect screens on doors and windows, cool fresh linen, fireplace and sunsets to die for. We went for a swim in the Gamka River and felt like we were transported back in time when we spent our holidays in our grandparents farm. Long lazy days, balmy evenings, good friends and braais, It feels like a holiday home we want to keep on going back to, time and time again. Loved it!

So we managed 4 days for a Karoo break at the end of July, and booked Bokwagtershuis for the 3 of us, and our dog, and off to Matjiesvlei we went.

The weather treated us to an early summer, lovely mid twenties temps, mostly cloudless skies, amazing sunsets. The cottage is absolutely magical, has every thing you might need over a weekend or more, including a coffee plunger! An awesome outside stoep (patio) with a great built in braai (barbecue), and the garden has a huge section of lawn, perfect for lazing in the sun, or star watching at night. Comfy warm beds, great bathroom, lots of hot water.

We have stayed in Middelplaas often before, and it is our favourite 'huisie' (cottage) in the the little karoo, but the stoep at bokwagtershuis with its long table and chairs is a winner!

Well done Marietjie and family, this little oasis in the valley is sooooo deserving of this excellent rating!

The Porter / Schmid clan with Rusty..

What a peaceful place - nestled in the beauty of nature, owners are really awesome and made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. The long walks in nature was well enjoyed by the whole family and the sheer tranquility of the establishment and surrounds made for a really relaxing holiday.

Excellent stylish accommodation with beautiful surroundings for peace and quiet. The location is great, away from traffic and people in the middle of an oasis, it is great for relaxing and breaking away to rest and recoup.

We stayed at Middelplaas Cottage (part of the Matjiesvlei Cottages of the Scanell family) for three nights. This beautifully furnished renovated cottage was very clean, kitchen well equipped, with comfortable beds & good linen. Aircon in living room.We enjoyed the big veranda and tree at the front with lovely view. This was our favourite area. Also sat there star gazing every night with our binoculars. Wonderful that there are reading lamps at each bed. Also appreciated the files with info about the history of the valley and the people of the valley.
It is such a beautiful valley. We enjoyed wonderful walks every day, there are different options. We did not swim in the river or use the canoes, but it was readily available. This cottage is within walking distance from the Gamka river. Lovely braai area next to the river and at the cottage. Will definitely go again.
Do not plan any excursions out of the valley, rather spend your time there! (But bring enough food & wood, travelling to town is not really an option!)

If you're looking for a very clean, quiet get-a-way, just slightly off the beaten track, then this quaint air conditioned cottage is it. Plenty to do and see during the day in the Calizdorp/Swartberg area.

"The "Stalle" has a massive stoep/patio, which is great for braaiing and hosting a lot of people. The kitchen is quite small, so most of your cooking will be on the fire. The "Bokwagtershuis" has better indoor cooking facilities should this be important to you, but also has a lovely outside braai area. It also has an indoor lounge and dining room, which the "Stalle" doesn't have. We usually take both, so the inadequacies of either place doesn't really affect us too much."
