Advertised as a Luxury Backpackers . This is certainly not . The room was not serviced properly after the previous guests . There are no facilities in the room , no cooking facility , crockery , cutlery , no dish towels etc , etc . Coffee and tea supplied . The room was in total disrepair , broken blinds and un kept ! The exterior was littered with cigarette buts old guttering and dirt . The pool as advertised was worse than a farm dam , disgusting and unusable !

We booked in advance for 1 night on our Route 62 road trip. Great vibes and atmosphere. Received a warm welcome from the owners. Felt at home instantly. The room was comfortable, and included a coffee station and towels! There is a pub on the premises where the locals like to hang out and very popular biker spot. The also offer a food menu at very affordable prices which included burgers / chicken strips etc, very basic but great. Nice to have room / eats / drinks at one place in the center of the town. Only down side was the footsteps throughout the night and early morning from the second floor.

We decided to stop over here on a road trip through the Karoo and were pleasantly surprised by the hospitality, the vibe was just what you should expect from a backpackers and the bar and swimming pool offered a welcome respite from the Karoo heat.
Will most definitely stop over there again when passing through Barrydale

We stopped in for a quick lunch at the Dung Beetle Bar/Barrydale Backpackers, and couldn't have been more pleased. The service was the best we've had in 2 weeks in South Africa, and the food was great! The chips are home-made, sandwiches as well. The friendly yellow lab Bella was an awesome addition to the atmosphere. If it'd been anywhere near the end of the day we'd have just stayed the night. Next time.

Not only was the drive there absolutely spectacular, but hitting the pool with some ice cold beers afterwards - even better! Affordable, good restaurant and bar, plus an awesome dog! Highly recomended, nothing quite as awesome as the Karoo.

We phoned ahead, yes, Dungbeetle Bar will be open till late for the rugby game, and the kitchen will be open so "please come and enjoy the evening".
We arrive, and yes, the food was basic, but nice. Then the rugby started. The riff-raff crowd arrived. Clearly there is no regard for the law which prohibits smoking in a public place which includes a restaurant/pub where food is served. 30min into the game it seemed as if everyone was smoking with no windows or doors open. It was a cold Karoo night. I confronted the manager who had nothing to say. He gave me the owners cell number. We gathered our coats and left. I made a call. The owner was basically unpleasant, arrogant and unapologetic with naive explanations of how the law is applied at Dungneetle Bar. Here is her logic. Patrons who smoke can smoke inside the bar and restaurant. People who don't smoke can sit outside. It's rediculous, selfish, unlawful and in terms of the law she is liable for a R50 000 fine. Clearly I will never go back to Dungbeetle Bar in Barrydale. It was an abusive experience which cost me R500 for an evening I'd rather forget.

Stopped at The Dung Beetle pub for a drink. Great service and owners are so welcoming. The beef burger was delicious and service was great. The bar was buzzing with sport fans, making the vibe even greater.

My partner and I stayed at the Barrydale Backpackers for two nights this past weekend and we were most impressed. The room was well decorated, comfortable, and the coffee/tea section was so well stocked! Most places will offer one or two sachets of each and charge for a refill, but not there. Another thing, and this may sound strange, is that they offer towels and double ply toilet paper. Those are two additional things that tell you they care about their customers' experiences. The pub is awesome too and we spent a lot of time socializing there and getting to know the regulars. We received very friendly service, and the pub food was also really good. It's simple fare, think chicken strips and chips or burger and chips, but it was prepared beautifully...and on top of that, it was very affordable. So if you're hungry and you need a bite to eat, you don't have to go to a restaurant, you can stay right where you are, order your food and carry right on socializing/drinking. I highly recommend them. We were taken care of so well, and the staff ensured we had all we needed during our stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the second floor....the floors are thin and sound tends to travel.

Okay, I've just returned from an excursion to Barrydale somewhere on Route 62 into the Klein Karoo with my dear friend Nicky Carter and Liam, my nephew. The trip was a tad long... due in part to Nicky and I indulging in some serious catch up after 11 months; and sailing past the turn off for Route 62! There was much hilarity when we realised we had to retrace our steps 😆. We eventually arrived in Barrydale after 7 hours and checked in to Barrydale Backpackers.

Therein lies much unnecessary ado... honestly, if you're in the hospitality business, be hospitable. Our greeting was harried and unfriendly. The fact that the Boks were playing France is academic. After checking in and paying, we took our bags to the room and were told the hot water geyser would be switched on and the water would take 20 minutes to heat up. Okay, we said, we'll grab some food while this happens.

After eating we returned to sup a glass or two, natter some more then bed down for the night. It was jolly cold in the room... well, try frosty. No effort had been made to offer us a heater to lift the cold in the room. With nobody on site, we contacted the owner (who we learnt is selling the establishment) asking for his assistant (Tracy) to return to the backpacker or call us about our request to give us hot water bottles. Said hot water bottles we had seen in the downstairs unit, hence the request. The owner's palpable disinterest and inaction meant we endured the most uncomfortable, bitterly cold, sleep... if you can call it sleep.

To add insult to injury, the bunk bed is of such dubious construction that we felt any movement from Liam in the top bunk could see it fall on the lower bunk bed. How the bed joists can be deemed to be safe is seriously worrying, ie, the leg frames did not lock together and one bunk was simply balanced precariously on top of the other. This meant that Liam and I had to share the double bed, so worried were we that the top bunk would fall onto Nicky...

I am and remain annoyed at our experience at Barrydale Backpackers. No, I didn't expect The Ritz... I did expect warmth and some comfort 😠

Stopped over here on a bike trip through the eastern Cape. Rooms was pleasant and clean, the bar is a welcome attraction and the main feature of the establishment. Pricing is very reasonable, there is no food service but a walk to the garage offered everything needed. The proprietors were super friendly, totally helpful and accommodating and adds to the charm and warm hospitality rarely found nowadays. I will most certainly use them again.
