I booked to have an hour foot treatment and then a pedi (45mins) . Emma was my beautician. Room was very warm with no music . She started on the pedi which I thought was strange . Then after 45 mins just rubbed my calves a bit and after 55mins ,in all ,told me I was done !!! I was rather confused but thought ok she’s just done a pedi so that’s fine . Then informs me bill isR430 for both treatments. I was a bit taken aback . I then argued that I had not received both treatments and she said okay -R230 for pedi . So she was basically robbing me Also they had no card machine so I had to phone my husband to bring cash . Very disappointing.

The road to the property is a dirt road, the property itself is an old house which needs a bit of work as well as the garden. Parking is limited and not that safe although there is a guard at night. The welcome you received is very subdued and not the friendliest. The spa treatment is a complete rip off, the ad is very cleverly done as everything is advertised for two people except the massage, I had to pay in an additional R950 to join my girlfriend. It is advertised as a full day treatment, ours lasted 3.5hrs. Our pedicure and manicures were atrocious really badly done from the cutting of my nails and cuticles to her nail varnish, very sloppy and seems the staff was in a hurry. We were offered nothing in terms of refreshments although we got a voucher to have lunch at another venue which meant you had to get dressed and drive into town. The dinners were all at a pub and so was the lunch. So we had to eat 3 meals at the same place with the same menu. The breakfast was decent. The Fountain room we stayed in was very spacious and clean. One does not feel the safest as it seems close to the informal settlements. The owner was not seen at all. I would not go there again. Was not great value but not the worst neither. Property needs an upgrade, security and parking needs to be addressed, front of house needs training, spa treatments needs to change to half day, technicians needs training, dinners needs to be changed to a different venue.

Response from Ignas Oberholzer, Owner at The Highland Rose Country House & Serenity Spa
Responded 26 Oct 2021
I like to correct you as the info provided are factually incorrect ... For starters the Spa treatment was 4h30 minutes and nothing is rushed off ... The R950 you complain about was discounted from R1800 I doubt your intention here as he had the opportunity to lodge a complain with me personally as I was at the Restaurant or Pub as you called it for most of the time and I have spoken to you as well. So the fact that you have not seen me at the Guest house does not mean you haven't seen me as I explained to you above. Yet you choose social media ... I guess it is all about the upgrade fee of R950 ... Just an opinion You are correct that we do give Vouchers for the meals to the our own Restaurant and there is no logic to send business to other establishments at our cost but you could have done so at your own cost I do not follow your remarks an safety and security, we do have secure parking, locked gates and a night guard, There is no other guesthouse in town that provide these kind of service. Furthermore, Dullstroom is a small town and by definition the entire town is close to the township, not that it is a problem as we live in a free and democratic South Africa so your statements is not justifiable at all. And just to clarify this, Dainfern is right next to Diepsloot and so is Steyn City and that is not a problem. We never had any problems to date and I live across the street from the Guest House. Lastly you are correct, it is an old house built in 1934 and therefore a heritage building but it is well maintained and so is the gardens. We just came out of Winter season and yes with temperatures dropping way below zero in Dullstroom it is difficult to keep a green but it is maintained and clean as well. The staff is well trained with service records at the same place for more than a decade and I hardly received any complains on the staff but compliments I do get.

When we arrived, there was no-one there to greet us and the door was open (I found this quite odd as anyone could walk off the street and go inside). I eventually noticed the keys on the desk in the dining room and we checked ourselves in. Everything was very clean and the breakfast is good. My only issue was with the sky lights in our room - not much sleep happening after sunrise. Next time I will ask for another room, all in all value for your money.

We were not welcomed friendly at all, no welcome drinks as was included in deal. The lady ‘signing us in’ not very welcoming. Spa really unprofessional and outdated. Also booked extra treatments that wasn’t arranged. Didn’t feel very welcome at all. Entire place just really run down and not the cleanest. We skipped breakfast and just left. Can see this place was beautiful, but no more. Bedding very old. Location bad (on gravel road behind location.) Struggled to find it. Really NOT worth the money, and no proper management in sight. Was really disappointing. Was suppose to be my hubby’s bday stay over, but just wanted to leave. Still disappointed over booking here. Wish i had known.
