What a top spot bordering the beautiful and legendary tiger fishing destination, Jozini dam. 5 star self catering safari tents with a built in braai area on your own deck with a "donkey" hot tub outside too! All this while inside the Pongola reserve, with Girafffes and plains game in your view! The tents are spaced nicely which is a huge bonus so that you can enjoy your privacy. Friendly staff welcome you to this fantastic travel destination and unique experience.

We stayed in tent #6 and being familiar with Africamps, we knew what to expect. The tents have everything you need, and what is great is that you could buy ice, wood and a few bits on site by means of an honesty system. Our host, Lorraine, was lovely and friendly. All the staff are great and very friendly in fact. We enjoyed a river cruise one morning with ranger Eric. We saw a variety of wild animals and birds from the boat. It is a GREAT way to explore the park. The monkeys are little terrorists and quite hungry, so listen to the host's instructions and ensure you really close your tent properly before leaving. In fact, I suggest you ask the staff to close it on your behalf as they really have a few clever tricks to ensure the monkeys won't be able to sneak in. We had Nyala and Impala buck grazing around us - really lovely. We can really recommend Africamps White Elephant!

Every time we drive back from Mozambique, we admire in ore the Natural Beauty of the Pongola River and Dam.
Every time we drove past I used to say “ One day I want to stay in Pongola at the water’s edge”…This Year I made it happen.
After some research we decided on the White Elephant Safari Lodge…
OMG…
From the Minute we arrived till the Minute we left we were spoilt beyond our own beliefs…
After a long and exhausting drive from Ponta Malongane, Mozambique and through the +-10Km Gravel Road from the Pongola South Reserve Entrance we arrived at the Lodge.
Waiting for us as we parked our vehicle was the receptionist with some refreshments and facecloths so that we may freshen up before they showed us to our room.
What happened next set the stage for what was to one of the best experiences of our African lives.
Not only was our tent immaculate and luxurious, but there was a sweetness in the air…
When we walked through to the back of the tent we realized that they had run a bath for us…Wow…I was amazed…
There was this Old Fashioned Romantic four footed Metal Bath, with an old fashioned oil lamp Lit, sweet aromatic bubble bath, rose petals everywhere and as we opened the back of our tent we watched the Sun Setting from our bath just with the mozi nets pulled down…Absolutely Spectacular…Breath-Taking… Just when we thought that the view could not get any Better along came some Nyala’s Feeding in our Back Yard…That is a memory that will last a Life time…
Now the stage was set…
Every evening they ran the Bath for us…
Dinner started with Drinks served around the Boma with a fire going, next to a Rim Flow Pool, that served as a watering hole for the Occasional Game that came to drink from it, even in our Presence.
Dinner was served at the Main Guest House with Views over the Reserve Facing the Pongola River.
The Main Guest House and the Accommodation is not Right at the Water’s Edge but Close enough, with the most Spectacular View.
The 6 course Dinners were always exceptional, every evening we had a choice of Game, something we loved. Service was impeccable.
Breakfasts were the usual array of cold Meats, fruit and Cereal which followed with you choice of hot Breakfast.
After Breakfast you were left to Chill until high Tea at 14:30 when you were spoilt again with an Array of delicious treats.
Every Day we had a Choice of 2 Activities, one in the morning and one in the Afternoon.
In the Morning we chose to do some on land Safaris and in the Afternoon we chose to do the Water Safaris.
The on land Safaris were Great, we saw loads of Animals, but the Safari on the Pongola River was one of the highlights of our Stay.
We saw the Elusive Heard of Elephants with their twin Babies, White Rhino, Loads of Crocks, Nyala, Kudu, Giraffes, Zebra, Wildebeest, Impala, Warthogs and the Majestic Fish Eagles.
The views on the River were surreal, one felt so at peace with the world, the water at times was so still it looked like a mirror.
We stayed for 3 Glorious Days…Heaven Really is on Earth.
I want to Thank all the People who spoilt us rotten, from the Receptionist to the Game Ranger, to the Chefs, the Cleaners, all staff were Brilliant.
Can’t wait to go Back.

We - a couple from Germany - chose to stay at the White Elephant Safari Lodge on our way from St. Lucia to the Krüger Park. We chose White Elephant despite it being a bit pricy because of its proximity to the Swazi border and the elephants in the Pongola Reserve. Unfortunately, we could stay 2 nights - we did not really want to leave this wonderful place although we still had an exciting trip ahead of us.
Everything was perfect, we felt really spoilt the minute we arrived and were greeted by the head ranger and staff. Staying in the luxurious tents was a wonderful experience: You have both, proximity to nature and luxury. This was our first tent experience and we were somewhat sceptical but after staying in this wonderful tent, we are now big fans of tented accommodations in the bush.
The view from our tent was stunning - we could have spent hours just looking into the bush and across the Jozini Dam. We enjoyed excellent meals in a very nice and relaxing atmosphere with the very attentive service of all staff members.
What is really nice about White Elephant Lodge is that you can choose from a variety of activities such as game drives, boat rides on the Jozini Dam, bush walks, and more. Our two nights were simply not enough to experience everything.
We were also very fortunate to see the elephants: A few minutes after we arrived, we discovered a large herd of elephants from our terrace in the distance. This was apparently a big surprise for the rangers as well as they had not been seen in this area for a while. While George, our ranger, had originally planned a boat cruise for the afternoon game trip, he changed plans when he heard this and off we went searching for the elephants. We found them after a while and were extremely impressed by these majestic animals. Interestingly enough they looked different from what we expected - not grey giants but more dark red giants. This is apparently due to the red soil in this area. It was a magic experience - we could not get enough of it.
George, our ranger, was really great: Game drives, boat ride and bush walk were very informative. We were really impressed about his knowledge and his passion for nature and conservation. We were really sad to leave, and hope to be back one day.

We had for a long time been aware of White Elephant Lodge in Zululand on the Jozini Dam (also known as Lake Jozini) close to Pongola in Zululand. We finally got there and were accommodated in their Safari Tented Lodge. Well spaced units, and thus you are not on top of your neighbours as with so many who develop these properties by clustering them so close by you hear everything your neighbours do, here this is not the case! The magic is in the water experience, which incorporates not just the Lake but the Pongola River - superb and interesting birdlife and wildlife seen from the tranquil surrounds of the water, not as with so many other Southern & East Africa lakes, rivers and estuaries where you are surrounded by carft of every kind and crowds, this was a totally serene, private and magical experience in the sunny non humid months of the Kwa Zulu Natal Winter. Privately owned this lodge provides greats plains game and water plus the tented experience, and can be part of an itinerary that includes one of the many other Zululand options, and if time is available, the KZN Battlefields with their history and excellent accommodation and guides to the region. An easy self-drive from Johannesburg or Durban, with flight options into Richards Bay, and hopefully elsewhere soon, we enjoyed the hospitality food, history and sheer relaxation of it all. A cottage which we did not visit looks like a charming self-catering option, and there is a rustic self-catering Bush Camp too, but the Safari lodge with its glorious pools, immaculate cycad filled gardens and birds was our preferred option.

The White Elephant Lodge can only be described as ones personal African Paradise. From being personally greeted with a drink after navigating the track to the lodge to getting a free carwash before leaving the service is immaculate and very personal. It is located within the Pongola Game Reserve and a reservation/booking is necessary to enter the Reserve.

We stayed there in May 2011 for (sadly) just one night on our way from Sodwana Bay back to Jo'burg and enjoyed every single minute. Our "Tent" was very luxurious with a double bed with moskito netting, writing desk, lounge chairs with fridge in front of the tent, bathroom with two washbasins, a free standing bathtub, and as a special feature and additional free standing shower outside. We felt like being in a five-star Safari camp. The Lodge has 8 of these tents and all a very nicely spread out so that each tent is in its own secluded area.

The main building is a very nicely preserved farm building complete with hunting trophies, memorabilia, and small library and with its open rooms and the veranda an ideal spot to lounge in between game drives or other activities. Depending on the weather the melas are served either in the big dining room or out on the veranda. The Pool is currently under renovation (it should be finished by now) and next to it is a additional wooded deck with lounge chairs and in the evening a small fire is lit there.

All meals are freshly prepared and beginning with the Breakfast one is tempted to stuff oneself with too much of the treats on offer. It definitely is a notch above the normal B&B offerings and they are more than happy to accommodate special wishes.
In the afternoon High Tea is served complete with a selection of teas, scones, pastries, and sandwiches - in most places this would be a full dinner buffet.
Dinner is a set meal with 5 courses and we were treated to fresh Kudu - simply outstanding and one of the best meals we had in SA on our entire trip.

To watch the wildlife they offer a range of guided drives and walks (no self driving allowed) around the Reserve and also highly recommended boat trips on the Pongolapoort Dam with their own boat. All trips are with a private Guide and can be pretty freely scheduled. Where else can one watch the sunset on a boat, with a family of Hippos coming by, Eagles soaring overhead, and a freshly made Gin Tonic in Hand? Just by driving to and from the Gate we saw Rhino, Giraffe, Kudu, Impala, Monkeys, and dozens of colorful birds.

Did we have a complaint? Yes, now we are spoiled... ;-)

Additional Info:
Give them a call before you make a booking - normally very attractive discounts are available that makes a stay there a very affordable treat.
It is a 6-8 hr. drive to/from Jo'burg depending on the traffic. A good 300km of the N2 is currently under construction and stoppages of up to 30 min. can occur on single lane stretches.
At the entrance gate the guards sell very good and homemade Biltong (similar to Beef Jerky) made out of Kudu or Impala (which has been legally shot in the Park).
If this is your first place where you stay on a trip around SA be prepared to be disappointed with other places...

We spent two nights at this „Out of Africa“Safari Lodge. The White Elephant Lodge is beautifully located. The whole estate is so cozy and full of great pictures etc. The luxury tent was decorated with much love. The food was excellent and the whole team cared for us so so perfectly. Unfortunately it was not possible to do a boat cruise due to windy weather conditions but the bush walk was great and a very interesting experience with a wonderful guide. We highly recommend staying at the White Elephant Safari lodge.
Only one point could be improved: lights for the way to the tent would be helpful.

We only stayed at White Elephant for one night on route to Mozambique. We really enjoyed our stay here and would have liked to stay longer. The main area is just beautiful with amazing views of the dam - a real "Out of Africa" building! The luxury tents are just lovely, very comfortable with good bed and good linen. The bathroom is the cherry on top, amazing freestanding bath, that is drawn with bubble bath and candles when you get back from your evening game drive! The food was good, except the main course of roasted warthog was very dry and bland - so don't choose that as a main. Breakfast was lovely and afternoon tea very delicious! Our game drives were great, we saw lots of interesting birds and antelope and LOTS of warthog! We also did the sunset cruise on the dam which was the highlight - we saw plenty hippos and other big and special game. We would recommend this lodge - value for money, for sure, especially if you get it on a good deal from the likes of lastminutelodges.com Lastly - the staff are absolutely fantastic, couldn't do enough for us and SO friendly and funny!

Went to white elephant a while back in November but kept meaning to write a review as I had an amazing time! The highlight for me was the bush walk with Luke and George, where I learnt so much about the smaller animals, the termites and insects, the birds. Luke and George were so knowledgeable. It was totally fascinating and I would recommend this to anyone.
The place was beautiful too, with nyala drinking from the pool. And it was delightful to come back from a game drive to a hot bath!

We flew into Durban and then drove-it took around 3 hours to drive from the airport to the safari lodge. Car hire is really easy at Durban airport and, other then the actual pongola reserve, the roads are easy to drive on.

Good Day Titinette, Breakfast is both, there is buffet items and then you can choose which cooked items you want for your hot breakfast. For me the water of the swimming pool would be too cold, but you are welcome to try.
