AfriCamps is all about glamping at the most beautiful working farms and estates in South Africa. At each of our locations, you can get closer to nature without compromising on the creature comforts of home. AfriCamps at White Elephant is located in the thriving Pongola Game Reserve, at the foot of the majestic Lebombo Mountains in KwaZulu-Natal, just south of Eswatini. Pongola is the world's second-oldest private reserve and home to the popular White Elephant Safaris and the shimmering waters of Lake Jozini. Twelve self-catering boutique glamping tents dot the unhindered Savannah-like bushveld on Lake Jozini's shore. View game and birdlife from your deck and take in the unique surroundings and views over the Lebombo Mountains. Each AfriCamps tent consists of an outdoor wood-fired hot tub or splash pool, a spacious open plan lounge area with a comfortable couch, a dining area with a solid wooden table and seating for five guests, a fully-equipped kitchen, two bedrooms that comfortably sleeps five guests, and a bathroom complete with a hot shower, flushing toilet and washbasin. Both bedrooms are furnished with an extra length queen size bed and have their own private entrance which allows maximum privacy. One of the bedrooms also contains a single bunk bed. Our tents are equipped with air-conditioning and an indoor fireplace. Enjoy a braai on our spacious wooden decks and take in the views from the comfortable deck loungers. Pull up the front covers and transform the tent into a large outdoor living area. Unwind and appreciate a festive family breakfast while taking in the serene natural beauty of the South African Bush. Our tents are equipped with Wi-Fi.

Absolutely amazing place to destress from reality. In the heart of nature.

Arrival

Once you drive thro the pongola gate look out for the giraffe along the route. You will be pleasantly surprised.you will also see warthog and various types of birds and Springboks

Arrival
Check in is quick and the reception is very helpful

Cabins.
Canins are fully equipped. You are provided with a pack of wood and 1 strip of firefighters. Be sure to bring extra if you need to heat the hot tub or have a braai or heat the heater. We went in the midst of summer so didn't need more, however they do sell at the shop should you need.

Be sure to bring dishwasher liquid as the one they provide is very watered down and be sure to bring washing sponges for the dishes. The cabins are not serviced daily and u need to wash up your dishes.

Also bring camping chairs. They only provide 2 relaxing chairs and there is a bench outside. It is difficult for an entire family to sit out and lounge without the camping chairs.

Bring water as the water is brown from all the taps. We used 15l for 2 adults and 2 kids for 2 days

The hot tub is also brown so don't expect a clear tub however once u look past it ots amazing.

There is a pool at the reception however be careful it is very chlorinated and will stain. I had on a white tshirt which turned yellow.

Be aware of the bugs carry coils and switch off all lights early so they don't get into the tent.

Activities

We did the night safari. If you have done a cruise along st lucia do not waste your time doing this. It is extreme boring and painful. We saw a few hippos crocs and various bird.

Overall it was amazing to unwind. Bring Activities as there isn't much to do....

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and were able to relax while surrounded by nature and wildlife. Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your valued feedback. The water inside our tents and in the hot tubs is sourced from the lake. The water is safe to drink but can have slight discolouration, especially at this time of year when it rains. Bottled water can be purchased at reception. As our camp is situated in a private game reserve, most activities revolve around wildlife and safaris. We offer several types of game drives, both on water and on land, an elephant research project, a guided game and birding walk, a rhino expansion project, and fishing in Lake Jozini.

We loved this amazing spot in the bush with a gorgeous view over Jozini Dam and the mountains beyond. The tents were very nicely set up, comfy beds and stylishly simple kitchen, bathroom and eating area. The reserve was beautiful and the whole experience was a wonderful surprise. Super friendly and helpful staff too.

we spent 2 nights at the camp and it was beautiful. the tent has all the amenities of home and the views of the bush and the lake are lovely. we also enjoyed the birdlife and the animals that wandered around the tent. the lodge also has a lovely pool to relax at and the animals also come around the pool to enjoy the shade. the water is an issue and you definitely should carry some. the tent also has a wood boiled hot tub which is unique to africamps and which we thoroughly enjoyed. the lodge offers excursions and self drives are not allowed. we had a very relaxing weekend at this lovely lodge.

Thank you for a great review, Praven. Water in the tents is filtered, and although discoloration does occur - the water is still safe to drink, but mineral water can be bought from our camp shop. We are thrilled that you enjoyed your stay at our newest camp and hope to welcome you to more camps in future.

Great setting and tents are ideally equipped for small families or those with young children. No choice for game viewing but to pay for a game drive (no self drive allowed) and that cost R2,500 for 4 adults and 2 kids. That would have been ok but ended just seeing some buck with an averagely informed and interested guide. The kicker is they serve you drinks and give you a snack and then make you pay for it at the end.

Beware that you have to pay for everything there except the air that you breathe so you think you’re camping but you’re actually paying 4* hotel prices and you have no choice but to pay for excursions as you’re not allowed to organise your own.

If you fishing, you pay for the boat, then each fishing rod and get this - even for the bait! Separately - despite us sharing our breakfast / brunch with the boat captain.

They even charge you for the tiny wood bundle that you have to fetch yourself to light the braai. Also the water is poorly filtered but no one tells you to bring your own water - luckily we asked prior to arriving.

Once you’re there you’re basically stuck unless you want to drive to Pongola (1 hour) for provisions.

We wrote to management and communicated with on site management while there. They basically could not give a stuff. A 5 night break ended up costing over R35,000 for 4 adults and 3 kids.

Total rip off and poor management response / indifference means we will never go there again.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We're glad to hear you enjoyed the setting of our camp and the facilities in the tents. Although we have been in contact with you after your stay, we'd like to clarify the following in terms of how our camp and rates work. All our camps are self-catering and this is communicated with guests before booking. Because White Elephant Safaris is located inside a private game reserve, and is an hour's drive from the nearest town, we encourage and remind guests to stock up on supplies before they arrive. The reserve gate (as with all game reserves) has strict gate hours, the gate closes at 18:00. With regards to tours and activities, these are owned and operated by White Elephant Safaris and are not included in the AfriCamps accommodation (rates starting from R1340 pn for 2 adults). The AfriCamps offering is not an all-expenses paid product, and all activities and tours are optional extras. Self-drive game drives are not permitted because we are located in a privately-owned game reserve. To avoid disappointment, we clearly communicate that our rates include accommodation only before the booking is made. We are sorry to hear that you were not aware of this, and we trust that you will understand our perspective.

The accommodation itself was good, clean and all you need are provided. I would recommend a larger fridge in the tent. We stayed for 4 nights and were battling to keep our meat cold or frozen. Unfortunately the salads went off and ended in the bin.
We also thought we booked and paid for breakfast baskets but we’re told on our second day that we apparently didn’t request for all the mornings. The lady at reception couldn’t help us either with breakfast baskets for the duration of our stay, which was a bit of a spanner in the works, now having to go look for breakfast at another lodge. Africamps should be prepared for guests that might not have breakfast goodies with them. Also if we did have breakfast goodies with us, then definitely the fridge is too small too accommodate four days of food.
The camp itself is nice and I really liked the old house they use as reception. It’s a beautiful building with a bit of TLC.
The reception area has bees, so be warned for anyone allergic to bee stings. The lodge should remove these bees to a safer place.
The hot tub was very nice and clean. Warning, the inlet pipe from the donkey to the hot tub gets hot and you don’t want to sit or touch it, warn your kiddies.
Unfortunately there were some very noisy people in the camp whilst we were there. One tent the kids were playing, screaming and running early in the mornings and not being considerate too any other guests.
Then we had another tent with a couple and kids that were fighting, swearing and screaming so loud the whole camp could hear them. Very embarrassing behavior and they should be ashamed of themselves. I feel sorry for the kiddies.
The reserve is very large but unfortunately self drive isn’t allowed so you are basically stuck at camp the whole day. Alternative activities is very far away, also very expensive and the reception couldn’t really assist us with any tips or details for these activities.
The boat cruise was nice and Sipho was very friendly.
Recommended: Renovate the old house a bit
Have more activities available for kids.
Self educate about all the surrounding activities you can offer to guests.

We are so glad the tent was to your liking and that the cleanliness was to the AfriCamps standard. Thank you for your valued feedback. We discussed the matter with our camp team as you should have been provided meal baskets as guests are able to order them up until 24 hours in advance. We sincerely apologise that this did not happen in your case and for any inconvenience. Thank you for raising your concerns about the bees at the reception. We are aware of them. We do not use extreme measures that may be fatal to remove them and therefore, need to wait for a trained professional to come and smoke them out. This way they are safely moved and not harmed in the process. We have placed hive bodies along the building to lead them away from the building. We are sorry to hear that there were noisy guests during your stay. We encourage guests to report other guests who do not adhere to our noise policies. It is our understanding that, after being made aware of the noise, our team went and asked them to quiet down. We list several activities available to guests on the property and in the area on our website and guest guide app. We are sorry to hear that this was not sufficient. Should you wish to discuss the matter further, please do not hesitate to contact us at hello@africamps.com.

Beautiful setting, tents are well equipped. experiences were not value for money at all. we paid about R13 000 for 2 experiences for a group of about 10ppl. prices given did not match the prices in the booklet. no water given on these trips, no toilet on boat cruise. Guides were lovely but young and inexperienced. barely any game seen and not much insight from the guides given on these experiences. The camp itself was really value for money but definitely cannot say the same for the experiences. As a working class family in south Africa to have to pay this amount for experiences not worth the price was extremely disappointing.

Thank you for your honest review and remarks. We are glad that you enjoyed the facilities of the AfriCamps tents and we are sorry to hear that the experiences did not meet your expectations. We apologize for any discrepancies in the information. We are in the process of updating the information in our tents, but we do advise guests that printed material can be subject to change and that the website and hosts will always have the most recent and accurate information. We do believe that our rates are very fair compared to industry rates and we have even split our elephant safari tour into two parts to make it even more affordable especially for our local guests. We hope to welcome you to more of our camps in the future, you will find the standards and layout of our tents consistent from location to location.

It was overall an amazing experience. The hot tub in front of our tents is a hit, and our kids loved it. There is air conditioning, which is a must because the area gets really hot in the tent. Lots of ants in tents. They make it difficult to store food

Thank you for your review and for letting us know about the ant situation. We will definitely let our camp hosts know and see what we can do about the matter. We would suggest keeping the tents zipped and all food items packed away in the 2 mini fridges provided. We are glad you had a great 1st time glamping experience despite the ants and hope to welcome you at more of our locations.

We have a soft spot for this particular part of KZN and were excited to try the new AfriCamps at White Elephant Safaris! We were not disappointed! The tents and private verandas were beautifully appointed and maintained, and the hot tub was a wonderful novelty that we enjoyed enormously. The Pongola river cruise with experienced skipper Patrick is a must and the banks were teeming with wildlife, but our highlight was the game walk with Cosmo. He is a highly knowledgeable and enthusiastic young man who expertly led us around the reserve. We will be back as soon as we can get away again.

This Africamps, is exactly the same as all the others, but a 2nd fridge on the deck was greatly appreciated as the standard bar fridge in the unit in all Africamps units, is hopeless inadequate for a family of 4, staying 3 days or more. Great views of the dam and stunning wildlife setting with game roaming through the camp. The shop has no food to buy, unlike some other Africamps, besides a few chips and snacks. This Africamps is so far from a town that if you run out of food, going to a shop is out of the question. Only activities are fishing and game drives, all at additional costs as you may not do these by yourself . No place to exercise except a walk around campsite of just over 1km.

We had pretty high expectations and were definitely nót disappointed. Outstanding concept at amazing location. So much thought has been given to detail, outfittings, smoothness of arranging extra services, we found it almost too good to be true until we found out this concept originated in some Dutch minds.... Haha not chauvinistic at all :-)
But honestly, breakfast and braaibaskets do the trick. Hassle free to order, reasonably priced and above all of excellent quality!! Drinks and snacks can be bought at reception or bring your own. Everything else in the tent has been thought of: blitz, mat he's and first batch of braaiwood, microwave, kettle etc etc never found a self catering accommodation to be so complete. We had the best of times and will most definitely try out some of the other camps.Thank you AfriCamps!
