Esikhotheni (pronounced “ss-khot-hen”), Zulu for “In the Sticks,” is by no means primitive and untamed as the name would suggest. Comfortable and elegant without being fussy, Esikhotheni Lodge celebrates tranquil charm, surrounded by untouched African bush, on a stunning hilltop location overlooking the shimmering Jozini Lake. Superior accommodation is offered in 7 en-suite chalets, positioned for optimum privacy; all have private patios with magnificent magnificent views. The bathrooms are very spacious with large showers and raised oval baths with clear views of the lake. The Honeymoon Suite is designed with the more romantic guest in mind, with a private Jacuzzi set on an extended deck in the bush.

David the owner is a very welcoming and interesting character. Deion the professional hunter was magnificent in his role and down to earth outside of business hours. Robert the tracker was very, very skillful. The accommodation at Bushcamp was not only idyllic but serviced all needs. The main lodge was always up for some company and banter.

Situated in a private game reserve the lodge offers 6 catered rooms each of which is situated well apart from the others with views over the bush to Lake Jozini. They are large, well equipped and definitely have the "wow" factor. Meals are taken either around the Braai area or in the main building which has a decked area with recliners and bush views. There's also a large rustic styled outdoor pool. Guided bush walks (excellent), fishing and boat trips and rhino tracking are on offer.

This was the highlight of our holiday. We curtailed our beach holiday and returned back to Esikhotheni for 4 more nights. Rooms and views superb. Food good and service excellent. It is however a very quiet holiday so if you looking to relax and switch off then this is the place for you. only 10 guests at a time so loads of privacy and peace and quiet. Game drives and fishing available for the more adventurous.

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon and our experience was horrible to say the least. The list is too long to mention here. The owner did offer us a fee weekend to compensate but after some thought I realized once you had a bad experience no freebees will change it.

We stayed overnight en-route from Johannesburg to Mozambique. As it was just a stop over, we booked the dinner and breakfast option. Were a little concerned to discover a large sign on main road that said the place had been up for Auction between the date of our booking and our arrival. Some of the staff are concerned for their jobs. There was no one at Reception when we checked in and had to phone to find someone who blamed the gate security for not letting him know we had arrived. The room was lovely and clean with King Bed, Bath & Shower - view from bathroom overlooking the bush. Good Water Pressure and bar fridge - though the dam view was a bit of a poetic licence. It is quite a distance away from the chalet we stayed in.
Dinner however was a complete disappointment. We are "foodies" and good cooks. Starter of Butternut soup was pleasant but the main course consisted of two overcooked chicken thighs, "creamed" spinach, which hadn't even smelled a splash of cream and baby potatoes. All of which was OVER SALTED. Not only boring but we felt as though the management were cooking for their family and just prepared 2 extra portions. Hardly the fare we expected for the price. Dessert was purportedly Malva pudding which tasted more like a bran muffin and was served dry without icecream / cream or custard. Breakfast was ok - but when I order soft eggs, they won't stay soft if you keep them warm for 10 minutes while we eat our Muesli and yoghurt. No muffins / cold platters or croissants. Again very Basic for the price. Bar Prices were reasonable but the wine selection was also rather limited. We were the ONLY guests at the time but no excuse for such poor fare. Here's hoping the new owners get the message. Perhaps the self catering option would have been preferable.

We had a lovely stay. The staff were extremly pleasant and helpful. Christmas lunch we found overpriced but was still delicious never the less. Accomadation was clean. Due to the severe drought we did not see much game. The men had a good time tiger fishing

Excellent for the overall rating...def will be staying there again, and would recommend this Lodge. The service at the main lodge was excellent, friendly staff, helpful. Food 5* at the Main lodge. We stayed at the bush camp, and would recommend this for larger families. Clean, all in working order and comfortable.

Had a wonderful stay at the lodge. The tiger fishing was memorable- my husband caught a 7.2Kg Tiger! Will definitely visit again. The accommodation was average but neat, we stayed at Sesane camp.

This is the last of the great African game lodges.
Get the smell and dust in your lungs as you come face to face with the residents of the African bush.
Great people, service and when you leave friends
