Rates from ZAR 8,980 per person per night. Nestled inside 1,000 hectares (2,471 acres) of Africa’s last remaining dry sand forest lies Phinda Forest Lodge, one of the world’s first eco-designed luxury safari lodges. With its seven distinct habitats, Phinda Private Game Reserve is often described as ‘Seven Worlds of Wonder’, a magnificent tapestry of woodland, grassland, wetland and forest, interspersed with mountain ranges, rivers, marshes and pans. Showcasing one of the continent’s finest game viewing experiences, the reserve is home to Africa’s Big Five, as well as 436 bird species. Set in a rare and beautiful sand forest, the glass walls of Phinda Forest Lodge’s 16 air-conditioned suites offer a sweeping view of one of the most unique ecosystems on the planet. A dense canopy provides privacy, and floor to ceiling windows invite the forest in, with the wonderful opportunity to view wildlife roaming outside your glass “bubble”, fluttering birds nesting in the foliage and the gentle rustle of forest sounds. On the edge of the forest, just before a clearing that overlooks a small waterhole, lies the lodge’s sparkling rim-flow swimming pool, an ideal respite in between game drives. Expansive decks in the spacious guest area, look out onto panoramic views of an open grassy meadow. In the evenings, when warm firelight welcomes you to the traditional African boma, wide-eyed bush babies watch inquisitively from the trees above, as you in indulge in a lantern-lit feast beneath a canvas of stars. Choose from a range of exciting Phinda Adventures such as a specialist walking and tracking safaris, a sleep-out under the stars, an infrared Night Eye drive, and other participative conservation experiences such rhino notching or pangolin tagging. Also on offer outside of the reserve, within easy access of the reserve are Zulu village tours, Africa Foundation community visits, a Maputaland exploration, Maputaland beach trips, night turtle drives (seasonal), scuba safaris, or an incredible ocean safari that offers you a host of marine life sightings. Specialist safaris can be arranged in advance and focus on special interests such as birding, photographic, family and private safaris.

This lodge is unlike any other - wild, romantic and special. The trackers and rangers are so experienced that they make you feel like you're in. David Attenborough documentary. Special mention to Josie, Mr T, Priscilla, Ncebo, Siphoe K and Siphoe.

Property's Favourite Review
As a Canadian from Canada, I've never been on a safari or visited South Africa. We came to see some friends and as part of our trip, we booked 2 days at &Beyond Phinda Forest Lodge. I had no idea what to expect, but whatever it was, my expectations were exceeded First - on the way there, we drove from Durban and followed a long dirt road into what seemed to be an uninhabited forest. A jaguar danced across a clearing beside us, and we hadn't even pulled up to the lodge yet. We were met by welcoming staff who gave us cool drinks and wet towels. Our bags were taken to our lodgings and we were lead to a beautiful dining patio overlooking the grassland, where nyala and kudu were grazing in the distance. This was all in the first 20 minutes! From there, after a spectacular meal we met our guide, Clive. I can't say enough about how attentive, accommodating, knowledgeable and personable he was. He was teamed up with our tracker, Musey, who later blew all of our minds with his astonishing ability to track even to most obscure and hard-to-find creatures including a chameleon perched on a branch in the pitch black of night. The safari vehicles are comfortable and clean, and allow you to view animals from any angle. We saw all the "big 5" plus many, many more. One of our friends is a birder, and lucky for him Clive was able to locate and identify a plethora of birds, adding to our friend's bird-count with 16 new-to-him species. The highlight for me was watching 2 litters of lion cubs playing in the grass. I could watch them for hours and hours; they're so adorable. We stopped for snacks on the drive, and they laid out a folding table with a full array of drinks and snacks, right out there on the veldt! On the first night, we and other lodge guests were treated to dinner under the stars at a surprise location. It was so beautiful and the food was outstanding. I'm a vegetarian who avoids simple carbs, and they even had a vast selection for a picky high-maintenance eater like me. The carnivores in the group were also satisfied. The sleeping accommodations are beyond luxurious. Comfortable bed, immaculate and clean, snacks and drinks in your room. I was so impressed. All I can say to conclude this is, I can't stop talking about it and ever since I've come home I've been trying to convince all my friends and family to visit Phinda Forest Lodge. It was the experience of a lifetime.

We had a wonderful four days at Forest Lodge in Phinda. The staff, food and guiding were excellent slightly let down by some areas of the property itself but we understand it closed at the end of May for major refurbishment so hopefully all will be put right. The lodge is located in the sand forest, a truly remarkable area and we strongly recommend a guided walk where you can admire the little things which you miss when driving through on a jeep. Spot the pin orchids which are truly beautiful. Josie and Mr T were our guide and tracker and worked so well together, managing to get us close to the action with lions on a kill, lions playing and chasing other jeeps, white rhino, cheetah, leopard on a kill............the list is endless but it made for a remarkable stay at Forest Lodge. All the staff from guides to housekeeping and everyone in between were friendly and dedicated and made our stay truly special. A cappuccino coffee, chocomokkarula or just a mokkarula was a mind-blowing option in the middle of the bush! The tasty treats that accompanied the sundowners or morning bush stop were amazing and the food in camp was extra special, so fresh, so tasty. We look forward to returning when the camp reopens.

Stayed in a luxe all glass bungalow for two. There are only 15 I believe on this property separated by woods for privacy. Accommodations included a luxurious soaking tub, indoor/outdoor shower sitting area indoor and outdoor veranda with complementary bar. Food was outstanding with different venues every night. Game drives wonderful and guides outstanding. Staff went above and beyond (no pun intended). Even the small on-site shop was stocked with great locally handcrafted goods and staffed by a friendly knowledgeable clerk. Infinity pool in the woods with views.

Spectacular, one-of-a-kind experience. Luxurious private cottages set in the woods, where we woke up with animals (nyala, others) grazing on our doorstep. Great food, wine, and service at the dining room including a unique experience at the boma (with game like eland and kudu). But the highlights are the game drives with personable and highly capable guides/ local trackers: we saw elephant, cheetah, leopard, lion, zebra, rhino, wildebeest, buffalo, baboon, monkey, nyala, impala, several bird raptors...lots more. Highlight of our three weeks in South Africa!

As part of my 60th birthday celebration, my family visited this lodge following a few days at the reserve's Mountain Lodge. We were sorry that we did not allocate more time to this unique game lodge. The well appointed individual units are made of glass, enabling one to experience the beauty and tranquility of the dune forest in which the lodge is located, from within one's own luxurious room. Service was excellent throughout, and meals were delicious and plentiful. The game and wildlife experiences were exciting and interesting, and included a short bush walk to study the unique trees and vegetation of the area. The forest is heaven for birders, and our very experienced and passionate guide helped point out 5 beautiful lifers for me. All in all, our stay was incredible and we will be back to spend more time in this unique lication.

This was our first major trip in a couple years. We were first timers to Africa and Safaris. We did stay at the mountain lodge one night too and that’s a cool experience - more open and hilly. The Forest lodge was as peaceful as the photos suggest. Beauty everywhere. There wasn’t a time when I didn’t see a Nyala quietly foraging an arms length away. The &Beyond staff really helps you get maximum enjoyment of your time there. Everything is taken care of. The all-inclusive meals, drinks, good food, laundry (we were on a two week journey) just to name a few facility related comforts. (Get the massage!) The rangers and guides were great. They were assigned to us like a team, and really worked to help us see amazing animals. We literally tracked elephants and cheetahs until we found them with plenty of other beautiful animals to see between. We will definitely go on safari again someday and will definitely look at &beyond for other trips.

The only reason i am giving a 4 and not a 5 was the accommodation which needs an upgrade. Out checkin was not a good experience as they did not “know” we were coming even though everything was in order and sorted after a quick conversation. This reserve has the big 5 and Dean, our guide was a walking source of knowledge while being entertaining. Food was awesome, again only after reminding them of my special dietary requirements. The forest lodges are situated in a sand forest and you hv to walk a bit between the lodge and tour room. But for seeing animals, if you want to see x Dean took us to see x, the communication between guides and knowledge of where the animals are at any given moment were excellent. Phinda would be our recommendation to anyone wanting to go on a luxury safari, just not staying at the forest lodge.

We went to Phinda - a rare dune forest in world terms - on a company breakaway. The food was great, the wildlife was superb and the accommodation was very comfortable. But what stood out was the people. Everybody was SUPER helpful, friendly and fun; and the expertise of our ranger CHRIS and tracker NTSIKA was astounding. Highly recommended

Forest Lodge is located in the unique sand forest with individual suites nestled among the trees. Our suite was very pleasant, well kept and clean. Floor to ceiling windows on three sides, bathroom with soaker tub, bar outside on patio, and air conditioning. WiFi connection was a bit slow, but good enough for emails, etc. I had a good phone signal. The staff are very friendly and obliging. Laundry was delivered the next day, nicely folded. The bar and restaurant area are very pleasant and there are antelopes, monkeys and other animals visible from the deck. Food is very good, served at individual tables. Steven took very good care of us and taught us a bit of the local language. Our safaris with guide Jess and spotter Bogani, in a shared vehicle were enjoyable and we even had a short walking safari in the sand forest to see some of the trees and plants. Forest Lodge is not an intense safari experience but overall stay here was very good and its a good choice for a short getaway.
