We were delighted with our stay at Makhasa for a weekend in May. The lodge itself was clean an inviting, and despite missing our evening game drive on the Friday evening (due to work commitments) we were blown away by the sightings we experienced in the subsequent drives, and in particular by the competence, professionalism and knowledge of our guide (Chris). He was keen to go above and beyond to show us interesting and exciting animals, and was happy to track some of the game on foot and then return to the vehicle for a spot of "off the beaten track" driving so that we could have a satisfactory sighting. Highly recommended for an unbeatable bush experience.

What an amazing place, from the friendly warm welcome to the sad farewell we were treated as special family. The rooms are beautifully decorated, simple but really comfortable, each looking out to a little bit of bush. The main lodge was also very comfortable. The food was delicious and well presented, with a lovely boma braai dinner for one of the evenings. The lodge is run by a small very competent and friendly crew, always smiling and nothing was too much trouble.
Our guide Chris, was one of the best guides I have encountered, his knowledge and skills to spot signs was incredible, he kept us entertained even when there wasn't much to see and made each drive an adventure.
I can highly recommend a visit to Makhasa Private Game lodge

We were scheduled to have a 2 night stay but ended up staying a 3rd night. The lodge is beautifully located and we had elephants at the waterhole on 3 occasions during our stay. The staff were all super friendly and the food was excellent. We had very experienced guides and managed to see lions, cheetahs, buffalos, elephants, rhinos(black and white) as well as a number of different bird species and plains game. The value for money at Makhasa was unreal and we really felt like it was a home away from home. We would return in a heartbeat.

Thank you for your lovely feedback Jess! We are incredibly privileged to have elephants visiting our waterhole and how extra special that you and Gareth got to see them 3 different times! We take pride in making Makhasa feel 'homely' and so glad to hear you thoroughly enjoyed yourselves. We can't wait to have you back and look forward to your next visit. Kind regards,

We visited Makhasa in December and had a good time, even though it was a very rainy and wet few days. The lodge is well kept with lovely private suites. The housekeeping service really stood out and the room was always clean and well attended to. While the room had a bar fridge containing water and milk, there were no mini bar options such as alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages that one could enjoy in your room/on the veranda. This is something I would like to recommend that the lodge look at implementing, as it is standard practice at other lodges.

We unfortunately did not have hot water for most of our three days stay. The lodge uses gas geysers which I know can be quite temperamental, however our unit's geyser seemed to be downright faulty. The maintenance team came to inspect and swopped out the gas bottle for a full one, but one shower later, and it was unfortunately back to very short periods of, or no hot water. This would not normally be a huge issue for us, but it was unfortunately quite a cold and rainy week and thus we really craved a stable, hot shower.

The meals were good and although options were somewhat limited, the food was cooked well and had a 'home-style' cooking appeal.

The game drives were done by &Beyond field guides, and they were top notch.

In general, Makhasa is a great find and good value for money for what you get. We did feel like it lacked a bit of finesse and attention to detail when it came to the smaller things, when compared to other lodges. My understanding is that the lodge is still quite new however, so I am sure these are growing pains that will be improved on over time.

All in all, a good stay however! The rating of 3/5 is mainly because of the hot water issue we had.

A wonderful 4-night stay at Makhasa! From the moment we arrived we were warmly welcomed, and care and attention was paid throughout our stay to make the experience the best it could possibly be. It was clear so much hard work has gone into opening this beautiful lodge - the vista from the main deck onto a water hole provided us with spectacular views of elephants drinking and lots of birds! The lodge is spotlessly clean, the meals were delicious and the game drives are excellent. We would, without hesitation, recommend staying here, especially because of its connection with the Makhasa community.

From the moment we entered Makhasa we already felt at home and relaxed. We were greeted on arrival by Skye, Stephan and Themba, a fantastic team and later we met Ellen who provided us with delicious cocktails throughout our stay. Makhasa is a hidden gem, traversing on Phinda land with and beyond rangers, 5 star service at a very affordable price- we couldn't have asked for more. Ross our guide is extremely passionate and knowledgable about the bush and we saw unbelievable sightings. The birding is superb, some of the best in the country and the trees and landscapes are out of this world, particularly the sand forest which is unique to the area. We cannot rate our experience highly enough. We will shout Makhasa's name from the roof tops and we hope to be back again very soon. Thank you to Skye, Stephan, Themba, Ellen, Ross and all the back of house staff we didn't meet, you made our stay truly magical. Nick and Christy

From start to finish— Everything was absolutely perfect. Upon arrival we were greeted by the staff, who take care of everything you could possibly need. They give you a brief tour and show you your suite— then your adventure begins. It’s a Very relaxing vacation, yet your days are full and leave you sleeping well after the game drives and phenomenal food! My fiancé & I saw The Big 5 in one day! 10/10.

You get good value for your money at Makhasa, and you support the local community by staying there. The people are friendly, the food is ok, and the game drive excellent. We had Chris for game drive guide. He is a local guy who is both a tracker and a guide. He knows everything, and finds everything. Just amazing.

Actually, we don’t want to make too much publicity about this wonderful place as we hope that it will stay the way it is and not to be found by too many tourists. Staff is great and very dedicated. It is a beautiful new lodge within the Pindha reserve but for so much less than what is asked for at Phinda. You do go on two game drives a day with the rangers and jeeps from Pindha but with your own small group. We even had the ranger and jeep to ourselves sometime and you do go on game drives of 4-5 hours twice a day with a wonderful breakfast and sun downers. The food at the restaurant is nice but nothing extraordinary. Make sure to ask about the road conditions in the park before you drive to the lodge yourself. We left our car at the gate and were picked up by a ranger due to heavy floods and roads being washed away.
