I just love the beautifully decorated and very comfortable hide leading you directly to the large waterhole, which renders you just 3 meters from the wildlife, at times even being splashed by the elephants when they shower themselves. I could sit here all day and night in anticipation of what animal may stroll up next for a drink of water.

Previously we had never seen leopard in the Madikwe reserve before, as the leopards there can be quite skittish, but on this trip we managed to spot leopard 3 times and even saw a leopard on a kudu kill. We also managed to track down the wild dogs and catch a glimpse of them on the hunt.

The food is tasty and the portions are generous, we couldn’t even fit in the lunches as we were still full from breakfast. The boma dinner is always my favourite and we were spoilt with the most perfect evening under the stars.
Our room was spacious and clean and had its own splash pool which is heated and beautifully lit up in the evenings, and we couldn’t resist the temptation to take a dip at night.
From romantic turn downs and massages on our private deck, to a magical dinner set up in our room, no amount of detail or effort was spared.
The main lodge area is comfortably laid out with outdoor and indoor lounges, a bar area and a lovely large pool which overlooks nature, and Valencia was eagerly standing by to bring us an ice cold gin and tonic.

Our ranger, Ralf, made sure he took us to incredible scenic drinks stops for sundowners overlooking the reserve and taking in the ever so vibrant sunsets, and once again we got to experience one of our favourite spots, Tlou dam, this time watching as two lionesses tried their luck at an opportunistic hunt, but were spotted by the warthog and decided to abort the mission.

Overall our experience at Rhulani was extremely enjoyable with the lodge providing everything you could ask for and we will definitely be returning with our sons to share this beautiful lodge with them too.

Dear Caroline The Rhulani team is delighted to read your review, which describes many aspects of a stay in a safari lodge like ours. We do a lot to ensure that we can offer first-class standards in all matters, and it makes us happy that, thanks to your words, we have received confirmation. Thank you so much for your visit, and we would be delighted to welcome you with your boys next time! Best regards Rolf & Marisa

We stayed at Rhulani for four days to kick off our honeymoon in South Africa, and couldn't have been happier with our choice. All of the staff were fantastic (Hloni <3, Tom, Michael, Bakang, and many more) — they were kind, friendly, and super efficient. From the moment we walked in we just felt relaxed — a welcome drink and a seat on the veranda with a view of the watering hole, where lots of elephants (including babies!) were enjoying the water. The hide, where you go underground to get a fantastic, up-close view of the watering hole, was incredible. We saw a pack of wild dogs there on our very last day — absolutely thrilling.

The rooms were cleaned impeccably every day, and we loved the scrolls that were left on turn-down — legends and stories about the animals around us. The plunge pool and private deck was a real luxury, and we were in Room 1, the furthest from the main lodge, where elephants and other animals wandered past throughout the late morning/afternoon while we were chilling on the deck.

A special mention must go to our guide, Ralph, who was a star. Such a warm, lovely person, with 18 years of experience as a safari guide. He knows his stuff and could answer all of our questions, and his sense of humour is THE BEST. His enthusiasm is infectious (as is his laugh!) and every moment in the car with him was a privilege. We saw lots of beautiful animals (including all of the big 5 in our first drive!), but even on more quiet drives we had just the best time. He made our trip even more special.

Thanks so much to everyone in the team — we couldn't have had a better start to our honeymoon!

Anna and Rick (UK / Netherlands)

Rhulani is amazing!! The staff cannot do enough for you. Tom-Hendrick, Valencia, Tresor , Daniel and all of the team were so welcoming and attentive. The rooms are beautiful, clean and very private. Our bed was very comfortable and we had a lot of space for our luggage.. The complimentary toiletries all very good quality. The mini bar in the room is always stocked up either in the morning or the afternoon as part of the turn down service. So many personal touches! You are always greeted back to the lodge with someone from the team there to welcome you and a drink ready and waiting. The food is very good, you will not go hungry and there is alot of variety! We ate in different locations throughout our stay. One night this was a surprise dinner in our room, our final night was a braai ( bbq) with all guests! We saw elephants at the water hole most times while enjoying a drink in the bar area and were able to visit the hide at any time to get closer which was amazing! The spa treatments are fantastic, Hloni was very good! The game drives were incredible. Willam our guide was so passionate and knowledgeable, he made the experience personalised to us and was happy to explain all about the animals and the environment so that we could safely enjoy this incredible experience. We really enjoyed the morning coffee with Amarula and the snacks as well as the afternoon drink of choice to enjoy at sunset out in the reserve. Michael the night guard was so lovely. He escorted us after dark and in the early mornings and made us feel very safe! We would recommend Rhulani to everyone, it was a fantastic 4 nights! Thank you so much!

Recently we stayed at Rhulani Safari Lodge for 4 nights. We arrived by private charter plane to a small airstrip close by, and our game ranger, Ralf picked us up .Upon arrival to the lodge, We were greeted by Tom with a warm wet towel and a welcome drink. The staff was there to say hi. Our room was a chalet with walls (not a tent) which we preferred. Since the hot tub was cool for our liking, the staff raised the temperature for us. The room were elegantly decorated and had a very full complimentary minibar. The plan was to eat all meals in a different location, but it was too cold a few nights. Michael was excellent at waking us up every morning at 6am for game drive and walked us to and from the lodge for safety. He also started a fire in our room for cold nights. As it was a lot colder than we had packed for, Michael filled hot water bottles for us for game drive and blankets and ponchos. Our driver Ralf was excellent. He did his best to not only show us all the animals, he was fun and excited. Our bar tenders and the rest of staff were also very friendly. Finally, the lodge has a "hide" or underground bunker that allowed us to see the animals VERY CLOSE. I would highly recommend Rhulani and would return without hesitation.

Rhulani is simply the best place to stay if you want to do a safari in South Africa.
The Hide is unique and you see all sorts of animals (we saw elephants, rhino, Gnu, buffalo) right there without even having to go to a game drive! You take photos just 3 metres away from the animals, right at Rhulani. Simply unique.
The staff is outstanding: they make you feel welcome and special. Jacky, the manager is very capable and engaged. Daniel is always friendly and ready to help; we watched a Champions League match around a glass of whiskey. Kyla is competent and on the ball.
The food is delicious and the several different dinner settings (Boma, old Boma, indoor, Marula Tree) make each meal special. Congratulations to Moses, who was the chef when we were there.
All rooms (they are actually small houses) are free-standing and independent from each other. No room has visual access to any other room. THis ensures total privacy for the guests.
Alasdair , the ranger we had, is excellent: professional, never tired, always energetic, well connected with the other rangers, he knows where to find the animals and he will take you wherever they are, no matter how far. He knows Madikwe inside out.
Madikwe is renowned for offering the possibility to see the animals from very close up. We saw lions, 1 lioness, cheetahs and hienas walk past our car just 1 metre away. We saw 60 elephants with heards of Zebras, Gnus, Buffalos, Giraffes, all drinking from a large pond, just like the scene in the Lion King film. We then drove amongst them all.
Unforgettable.

We have been to more than 100 Game Lodges all over the world and Rhulani is among top 5. The facilities are superb and all staff very kind and professional. The game viewing has been extremely good with professional game wardens who knew the Game reserve well.
It was a lodge where all guests were satisfied and created a good atmosphere.

We spent 4 days at Rhulani Safari Lodge for my husband's birthday. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted and introduced to the staff members and met our guide Ralph (who was amazing and absolutely loved every game drive with him - his knowledge is phenomenal and really revelled in every moment on the drives).

The suite was exquisite and we absolutely loved spending time relaxing in the private pool between game drives.

The hide at the lodge is incredible and is mind-blowing seeing the animals that close and at that level. Truly spectacular!

Every game drive was thrilling and we had sensational sightings! We were truly so fortunate in the sightings we had! The morning coffee and afternoon sundowner stops were always fantastic!

The food every day was of a high standard and absolutely delicious! On the night of my husband's birthday, they baked a cake which they brought out whilst singing happy birthday, it was so special for him and really such a lovely touch!

The staff were always friendly and quick to assist where needed.

We cannot speak highly enough of the outstanding time we had at Rhulani and we honestly can't wait to come back again in the near future!!

We stayed at Rhulani as a family, and had a fantastic experience. The staff are all amazing and went out of their way to make us feel special and like a "part of the family". They were great with our daughter and other kids that were at the lodge with us and ensured that our every need was taken care of. We thoroughly enjoyed our conversations with all of the staff, who enthusiastically shared their knowledge and ideas, and provided exceptional service that made us feel comfortable. At some hotels, you feel that you are being served because you are paying for service, but here we felt like we made new friends. Special shout out to Michael, the night guard, who built a cozy fire for us every night and was delightful to talk to about life at the lodge and South Africa.
The food was top notch, and the kitchen staff went above and beyond. Every meal was served in a different location, providing a unique experience. The Boma was a great experience, at which all of the staff performed for us and had dinner with us.
The rooms were perfect, with lots of space for us and our daughter. The heated plunge pool and deck were a great place to relax and enjoy the view of passing animals. The minibar was stocked with everything we could want, even so, the kitchen would happily prepare extra snacks or send drinks at our request. We absolutely loved the hide, which allowed us to get so close at ground level to the elephant, hyenas, zebras and buffalo that regularly passed through, with comfortable seats and drink service!
On the game drives, we saw more animals than I ever thought we would - just about every animal I could have thought of before we arrived. We also got much closer to the animals than expected. Our guide, Ralf, was amazing over our four days at Rhulani. He was very knowledgeable about the animals and the reserve, and he made every drive fun. He tailored the drives to our requests and was willing to spend as much time as necessary to find any animal we asked to see (though we're still waiting to see the jaguar riding an aardvark ;)). He was great with our daughter and made us laugh constantly. Not to mention he's not a bad bartender either. Ten points for Gryffindor!
Thank you to everyone at Rhulani for a once in a lifetime experience!

Just completed a three night visit to Rhulani Safari Lodge in Madikwe. The lodges are really comfortable and close to all facilities and the welcome and care from the staff was really super. There is plenty to do between game drives or not if you just want to relax by the main pool or your own plunge pool. Food and drink are of the highest level and the experience is so friendly and comfortable so that you really feel part of the wider park community. For the main part now which is the twice daily game drives I can only say that the sights we saw each time were mind blowing. You are taken so close that you can really connect with the wildlife in stunning settings. The variety of wildlife and the way they interact at Madikwe was a real education and unforgettable. I will treasure a large number of moments for years for the thrill of discovery and surprise at the activity. A huge thank you to Alisdair our ranger who made our time so fantastic. He was knowledgeable, patient, passionate, funny, entertaining and delivered excitement and wonder time after time. A holiday of a lifetime.
