#14 of 23 Speciality lodging in Madikwe Game Reserve
Travellers' Choice
The rich red timbres of the African earth are reflected in the warm tones of Madikwe Safari Lodge. Cradled between rolling hills, overlooking game-filled plains intersected by the Marico River and framed by the Dwarsberg Hills, just 20 suites are clustered in three intimate camps. With circular fireplaces at the heart of every suite, and big glass doors to blur the boundary between inside and out, Madikwe embodies the warm, bold heart of this spectacularly rugged corner of Africa. Spacious wooden decks embrace inviting plunge pools, and book-filled shelves in quiet corners entice and captivate, while large pizza ovens add a fun twist to meal times.

I had not heard of the Madikwe reserve before my wife and I went there a few weeks back - but WOW was it great. Let's deal first with all the positives. The Lodge was outstanding in every way: spacious, comfortable, amazing staff, amazing food and well located. This was a real bonus. A special mention to Beauty, Maria, Innocent and Aubrey all of whom were just so far above normal service standards that it beggars belief. The safari drives were just awesome with plenty of animal sightings and quite stunning photography. With the exception of leopard (which we didnt see) we had copious sightings of everything else and interesting sightings too - especially baby lion cubs playing and baby elephants. I have three observations to make but they do not detract from the easy 5 star experience. (1) The lady at the Reserve Gate was a bit officious and did not represent a very friendly welcome (2) the sign posting from the gate to the lodge was poor and we (plus others) got lost and (3) the wifi is a bit patchy in places. Overall though this was 9 star experience. We will be back for certain.

We had a wonderful stay at the Kopano Lodge, Madikwe Safari Lodge. We had the privilege of having two guides – a guide from our tour company that stayed with us throughout our 10-day safari and a local guide at each of the three safari lodges. Our guide at Madikwe, Mitchell, was amazing and helped make the visit even more special. We were lucky enough to have many special animal encounters, including a lioness calling for her cubs, a wild dog pack, a galivanting herd of elephant having the time of their lives at a waterhole, numerous white rhino, a super close encounter with a female elephant and her baby, and too many other zebra, warthog, giraffe, and elephant to count! The lodge itself was very special. The team at the Kopano lodge made us feel like family. They always called us by name and were willing to go to any length to make the experience perfect. It was normal to see elephant, giraffe, zebra, impala, and more at the water hole right in front of the fire pit. The lodgings were beautiful. Tons of space with a truly unique feel. We spent a lot of time on the balcony and in the plunge pool. Our only (kind of) feedback would be to make sure the shower is only at half strength – full strength would flood the bathroom area. The food was amazing too. Everything was pretty much perfect. We would visit again in a second – it is a life changing trip. If you are debating about going or not, do yourself a favor and book the trip!

I have been thinking of exactly how to write my review for Madikwe Safari Lodge. How to express my gratitude, my appreciation and my thankfulness. But the words have escaped me. That never happens. I am flawed. It doesn't often happen that you leave a place feeling not only relaxed, rejuvenated, reconnected but also deeply moved and deeply touched. But that's what happened with us. When I said goodbye to everyone at Madikwe Safari Lodge, I cried. Big tears. My heart broke to leave. I felt like I had become a part of a place, I felt like I had found a new family and just as soon as I had all of that in my hands and in my heart - I had to say goodbye to it all. I know all good things come to an end. But it just did not seem right. It still doesn't. So, I guess you could say that we had an amazing time - the understatement of the century you might be thinking - But we did. In more ways than one and in more ways than we ever could have imagined. Or expected. Or hoped for. And it started with booking our stay. We were accommodated by Natalie Sokolich at reservations who went out of her way to book our incredible stay. She was meticulous in noting all my dietary requirements, allergies and our preferences (which everyone at the Lodge certainly took to heart). But she also made us feel wanted, accommodated and appreciated. And that's not an easy task when you are only booking a stay. But she managed to do so. Easily. And when she is your first point of contact, that makes you feel immediately comforted and taken care of right from the very start. And that sort of soft, personal and warm treatment carried on throughout our stay. From the moment we arrived at the Lodge we were greeted with warmth and openness by Amy to being welcomed with a delicious lemonade by our amazing Jennifer to being seated and served a delectable (and diet and allergy friendly) lunch by our beautiful Beauty. Everything was perfect. Our room was stunning, the beds comfortable, everything was sparkling clean with every detail well catered for. We did not want for anything. And if we did, Jennifer or Beauty were at hand to cater for our every whim and desire. The manager Johan is an absolutely delightful gentleman who made us feel right at home. Like we were part of his family. Rare to accomplish in such a short space of time. Every single dietary requirement of mine was taken care of. Without any hassle whatsoever. I always had my gluten free option available (whether it was early morning coffee, breakfast, lunch, high tea or dinner) with the chef and kitchen taking extra care to ensure that my shellfish and nut allergies were taken seriously. And the food was honestly superb! Jennifer and Beauty were absolute darlings. I miss them already. What beautiful souls. Nothing was too much for them. And everything was done with a smile. True gems. Our ranger Lisa was entertaining and really went out of her way to not only share her knowledge but also to make sure that we saw the Big Five. She was charming and funny and we really enjoyed her unique game drives. I honestly cannot fault a single thing (except perhaps for booking such a short stay). The decor was beautiful, the staff friendly, accommodating and simply top shelf. Everything we asked for, everything we wanted (even the things we didn't know we wanted or needed) were taken care of. We felt like we were not only in the lap of luxury but also completely at ease, like we were at our home away from home. So much effort was put in by all to ensure a perfect experience. And that's rare. I know the travel industry has been hard hit by the Lockdown's and travel restrictions. But you would never say so by looking at Madikwe Safari Lodge. Their standards have not dropped at all. If anything a more personal approach has been taken where all their staff go the extra mile. Above and beyond. Striving to prove why the lodge still deserves its praises. Which it undoubtedly does! From the first dealings with their reservations teams until we said our goodbyes at our Lodge, our stay was amazing. Even our packed lunches for our long drive home were perfect. We are so very grateful and so blessed to have met everyone at Madikwe Safari Lodge - what an absolute world class, stellar team and establishment they all are. We will never forget our experience. And I can only encourage those reading my review to treat yourself to a wonderful safari experience. Whilst my husband and I do not have children and therefore enjoyed our stay as a romantic couples safari, the lodge easily accommodates and caters for families. So it would be a wonderful family stay for those families looking for a little bit more of a luxury stay. I am so relaxed that being back in reality is taking a little more effort than I thought it would.

My wife and I stayed at Madikwe Safari Lodge for our Honeymoon (5 nights). The trip was beyond all expectation, and it could not have been any better of an experience. The lodge itself is very well kept, clean, easy to access all area, and styled to make you feel in a mix between luxury and bush paradise. The staff were all extremely attentive and from the second you step into the lodge you are treated with such grace and happy attitudes. It made for a genuinely warming experience. All staff from cleaners to managers and chef were welcoming, kind, and attentive to any matter. The trip was made beyond perfect with the incredible guide, Borain. Borain must be one of the most passionate and incredible game rangers I’ve had the pleasure to meet. He was so enthusiastic and excited about his job, and it made us and all guests in his vehicle emanate this enthusiasm. His knowledge of animals in the park was vast and made an effort to make sure every person was comfortable, safe, and treated in the utmost respectful way. Our trip would have not been the same if it were not for this exceptional man and I think Madikwe Safari Lodge are lucky to have the honour to call him a co-worker and an expert guide. We can’t wait to be back and learn and experience so much more the lodge and park has to offer.
