The rich red timbres of the African earth are reflected in the warm tones of Madikwe Safari Lodge. Cradled between rolling hills, overlooking game-filled plains intersected by the Marico River and framed by the Dwarsberg Hills, just 20 suites are clustered in three intimate camps. With circular fireplaces at the heart of every suite, and big glass doors to blur the boundary between inside and out, Madikwe embodies the warm, bold heart of this spectacularly rugged corner of Africa. Spacious wooden decks embrace inviting plunge pools, and book-filled shelves in quiet corners entice and captivate, while large pizza ovens add a fun twist to meal times.

It was beyond my expectations. My husband and sister in law planned everything so I did not even look at the reviews until just before the trip. From the time we were greeted on arrival to the last good byes, there was superb attention to detail. The food was amazing and varied. We traveled with 2 vegans and the kitchen was on top of it even for the game drive treats! The accommodations were spacious, immaculate and unique in its style on blending into the natural surroundings. Location was excellent because the dining patio looked out over a watering hole which was as as busy as Grand Central station with animals at all hours of the day! Our guide Ivan and his tracker were knowledgeable and enthusiastic in getting us the best views of the animals without risking our comfort or the safety of the animals. Rooms with individual plunge pools were very spacious , clean and very well appointed with a stocked fridge, filtered water and coffee maker. The additional outdoor shower was a fun added touch !

5 stars all the way! This large and striking lodge in the beautiful Madikwe Game Reserve will definitely deliver on their promise of an unforgettable luxury safari. Their slogan… ‘So much more than the safari experience’ and that certainly rings true. The thing that stood out most on my trip to Madikwe Safari Lodge was the staff, who are naturally warm and welcoming and look genuinely happy to be there and assist you, and for me this is one of the best things about Africa! The friendly people and warm smiles are just part of our culture and ethos, and without it, it’s just not the same!
Our ranger, Lisa was knowledgeable and attentive to our needs ,and her patient and calm demeanour went a long way at sightings, allowing us to view the wildlife for as long as we wanted, thus, also creating the unique opportunity for us to observe a young martial eagle for quite some time before it swooped down and clutched its fierce talons into a rock monitor lizard, and then hurried over to the top of a nearby bush where the struggle for survival was something to behold.

The rooms are large and well decorated with ample space between the units and I just loved having my very own private plunge pool.
Being a family-owned lodge, a lot of Madikwe Safari Lodges efforts are directed towards families and making sure that whilst the kids are entertained daily by the experienced child minders, the parents can also have some peace and quiet to sneak off for a relaxing massage.

Now about that pool area! The large pool overlooks a picturesque eye-level waterhole that is frequented by all sorts of wildlife, and boy were we spoilt to an amazing elephant sighting with a sizeable herd including loads of tiny calfs that splashed around in the water for what seemed like an hour. Just incredible how a waterhole can add so much activity and excitement to the feel of a lodge.
Innocent and his team are on the ball, as soon as you walk into the pool area he’s already setting up an umbrella and putting out towels for you, and ready to take your drinks order!
Lunch at the pool was such a treat and the food they produce at every meal time is just perfection.

We loved the lodge and will definitely be back

My lovely wife and I spent 4 nights at Madikwe Safari Lodge, very well situated in the upper Eastern section of Madikwe on the side on a hill with great views over the grasslands.

The lodge staff were very friendly and helpful, and always on hand to see to your every need.

The common areas of the lodge are wonderful. There are many areas where you can dine and the variety was great. All food was plated from a reasonable size menu - now available as a QR coded website which allowed us to peruse the menu well before mealtimes. The servings are generous and we could not do three meals every day, so alternated between skipping either breakfast or lunch. Hard to do given how good the food was!

The suites are very spacious with a large central fireplace. Each suite has a deck overlooking the plains with a plunge pool and outside shower. There is both a fan and an air-conditioner. The beds are super comfortable and we slept really well.

There is a reasonable sized communal pool which was well used. An added advantage is that the lodge's waterhole is best viewed from the pool area! There was a near constant stream of animals passing by and using the waterhole. We even skipped an afternoon drive and sat photographing the wildlife from there - naturally with a bottle of champagne on hand.

Our guide for our stay was Mitchell, who was super professional and very knowledgeable. We really enjoyed our drives.

We had a wonderful stay and highly recommend this lodge.

Wow what an amazing experience. The team was so welcoming and provided exceptional service, from Abel to Olivia, to Greg the game ranger, Pinky, Isaac and Innocent (our meal servers), Clementine (The spider whisperer) & Irene - we really had a 5 star experience.

The resort was amazing, beautiful rooms (we had the rooms with the plunge pools) and a beautiful rustic bush setting.

The food was amazing and nothing was too much for them.

We had a bit of a spider problem to which Clementine came to help and then they installed mosquito nets so that we could sleep more peacefully and securely.

The pool are is situated perfectly right at a watering hole which provided the most spectacular viewing of animals.

This resort is a must for anyone looking for an amazing once in a lifetime bush experiences.

Overall 5 stars and a once in a life time experience

My wife and I stayed at Madikwe Safari Lodge for our Honeymoon (5 nights). The trip was beyond all expectation, and it could not have been any better of an experience.

The lodge itself is very well kept, clean, easy to access all area, and styled to make you feel in a mix between luxury and bush paradise.

The staff were all extremely attentive and from the second you step into the lodge you are treated with such grace and happy attitudes. It made for a genuinely warming experience. All staff from cleaners to managers and chef were welcoming, kind, and attentive to any matter.

The trip was made beyond perfect with the incredible guide, Borain. Borain must be one of the most passionate and incredible game rangers I’ve had the pleasure to meet. He was so enthusiastic and excited about his job, and it made us and all guests in his vehicle emanate this enthusiasm. His knowledge of animals in the park was vast and made an effort to make sure every person was comfortable, safe, and treated in the utmost respectful way. Our trip would have not been the same if it were not for this exceptional man and I think Madikwe Safari Lodge are lucky to have the honour to call him a co-worker and an expert guide.
We can’t wait to be back and learn and experience so much more the lodge and park has to offer.

The best lodge for a Safari, specially of traveling with family or looking for the best lodge ever!

We had great expectations and everything was much better! The place is beautiful, the view of nature and the nice premises. The activities are incredible, including everything that was organized and planned for the children. We traveled with a 5 and a 2 year old kids and there were activities and places on the lodge specially for them. The food was prepared with very good ingredients, a wide variety of delicious options in the menu and it was all memorable. The rooms are very nicely decorated and with everything that might be needed. But with all of that, the best is the charming and marvelous service from ALL the staff. They are always smiling, ready to help amazingly nice Mu children cried when we left because they’ll miss Mitch, our guide and Cecilia and Mimi responsible of the kids club. Clementine was our very nice waitress with many others that made our days in the lodge a life changing experience. I strongly recommend this lodge!

It was our first time in Madikwe and we enjoyed it thoroughly. I will highly recommend Madikwe Safari Lodge, (we stayed at Kopano) and would like to compliment an awesome team. We arrived very early and upon arrival we were greeted warmly by Rebecca and immediately felt welcome and at home. We were shown to our rooms shortly after we arrived. The rooms were comfortable and clean and have everything needed to ensure a pleasant stay. Thank you Osathile and team for the notes left by you every day! We took the option of bringing our own beverages at a corkage fee per night, but the restaurant and bar have many options and a good selection of wine, it wasn't really necessary. Shortly after we checked in Rebecca said good bye as she was going on leave. Thaila took over as hostess and made sure every need of ours were attended to. She even managed to find a specific tea I usually drink even though they don't stock it. Jake our chef's food was magnificent and always perfectly executed. The menu, although small has options for everyone. Thank you Maria and your team of waiters for excellent service. Mike our guide was fantastic. He is a gem! His enthusiasm and knowledge of the animals and people of Southern Africa kept us captive. We'll miss your ranger's special and dried bananas Mike! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return in future

I absolutely love Madikwe and have stayed at 5 different lodges over a total of 10 trips to the reserve. So many of the lodges are incredible, but this one is without a doubt my favorite. Everything about the experience at Madikwe Safari Lodge is perfect. The staff are incredibly attentive without being overbearing. They incorporate a lot of great personal touches, such as providing reusable water bottles with our names on them or sending us off after check out with snacks for the drive home. The food is, hands-down, the best food I've had on any safari anywhere- both the quality and variety of meals offered is quite impressive. The guides are engaging and quite skilled. Shout out to William! With him, we had some of the best game drives I've had in all of my trips to the reserve. And, lastly, the lodge itself is immaculate. The entire experience was simply luxurious! I will have a lot of trouble moving on to trying other lodges after having such an incredible experience at this one. HIGHLY recommend it!

This lodge is amazing! We received the best welcome ever on arrival with hot towels and cold freshly made lemonade. The food was outstanding, if anything there was just too much! The rooms were stunning and we saw so many animals visit the water hole near the pool, it was absolutely incredible. Our guide Mike was also excellent. There wasn't anything he didn't know about animals and he was so patient with the kids asking a multitude of questions. Highly recommend this place to anyone, particularly with young children wanting to go on safari.

From the time we arrived at Madikwe to the time we left, we were in paradise! It really was the holiday of a lifetime and was absolutely perfect in every way! The lodge itself is stunning, and immaculate and you immediately feel at home. The staff are AMAZING and can't do enough to assist and make your stay relaxing and fun. I thought I would struggle with the 5am wake ups for the morning safari drives but when you see the beautiful sunrise you quickly forget any tiredness and there is coffee and muffins to get you going!
We went as a family of four and we all had such a brilliant time. Although there is a great programme of activities for kids, our boys were a bit too old for it but it didn't matter as they had both the main pool (with the nearby watering hole that attracts the elephants!) and the private plunge pool to keep them occupied and it was great to spend some family time playing board games and card games when we weren't out seeing cheetahs, lions, elephants, giraffes and rhinos with Mike, our wonderful game driver.

The game drives were spectacular and we saw so many amazing animals up close on every drive.
The accommodation was sublime and really luxurious. The indoor and outdoor showers were so powerful and were the best way to wake you up before the early game drive. They make our home power shower feel like a dribble!! The kids loved the enormous bath too!
The food was also out of this world. Really beautifully presented with lots of choice. They also have a kids menu which is great for fussy eaters!
Whilst we didn't want to leave, at least we know we can always come back. Something to look forward to!

So am I. Obviously much quicker by plane but we booked a car takes about 4 hours but wow when you hit the park immediately you see the animals and scenery. Cannot say how wonderful Madikwe is. Staff, guide thank you Mike, accommodation wow and food and service. Enjoy

Sorry, just re-read your question. Natalie who deals with bookings and emails for Madikwe Safari Lodge booked us a Federal Air Flight from Joburg to Madikwe and return last month. They have am and pm flights. We were met in arrivals by their meet and greet service and taken by minibus to the very small but very lovely thatched Federal Air building. We had travelled internationally to Joburg with large suitcases. We had smaller bags for safari within the suitcases and Federal Air were all geared up to store our cases securely until we returned. Great little 1 hour flight in a 12 seater plane. We were met by Giraffe and Elephants near the runway. Our guide, Mike, from the lodge picked us up and we had 4 blissful nights and 8 wonderful game drives. On departure the Federal Air contacted the lodge to say that our return flight would be leaving an hour later but would still get us to Joburg in time for our connecting flight to Cape Town so we had an extra hour in the lodge. All travel and baggage arrangements were seamless. I am fortunate to be able to travel several times a year and have interesting and different holidays across the globe, but this the only place I have travelled to and cried on the plane when we left. It was just magical. Pricey but worth every penny!

We were there in mid-August. It was cool when you first go out in the mornings until the sun has been up for an hour, and gets cool in the evening when the sun goes down. However the day time was just the right level of heat where shorts & t-shirts were spot on. But you would definitely want to have jogging bottoms & a long sleeve top for morning safari. Pool isn't heated but it isn't needed with outside temp, plus the view from the pool is spectacular. I'm so jealous you get to go here...enjoy!
