Just 4 hours out of Johannesburg this incredible malaria free, Big 5 wilderness, Madikwe Game Reserve, awaits to spoil you with great wildlife sightings.
From the minute you arrive at Morukuru Family Madikwe you are welcomed by the warm African spirit that the staff exude, smiling and friendly faces, willing and eager to assist with your every need.
The exclusivity of Morukuru lodge is what we loved the most, not having to see other guests or needing to go to a general main lodge area for meal times, but rather feeling completely relaxed in what very much feels like your own home from the very first day.
We especially loved that meal times were more about quality family time instead of having to make sure the boys kept quiet and didn’t disturb other guests.
This magnificent, spacious villa is what dreams are made of, with beautifully decorated living rooms and bedrooms all leading onto large terraces which blend into the natural surroundings, making you feel like you are completely secluded and in sync with nature.
The game drives were superb, Evan and Gami are a dynamic duo who are knowledgeable about every aspect of wildlife, flora and the reserve. They managed to position us right in the middle of a cheetah hunt, and made sure we were always perfectly positioned to get the best photographs, as well as never making us feel rushed at a sighting. Evan is great with kids and added in so many exciting little moments for them, which they will never forget.
The chef is accommodating at meal times and will whip up whatever your heart desires, albeit we aren’t fussy eaters, and were excited for him to spoil us as he wished and we were always pleasantly surprised with the delicious, hearty meals he presented.
Leaving this amazing lodge was the hardest part of it all.

Myself and 6 friends have just returned from an amazing trip. We stayed for 5 nights at Morukuru Farm House and were very well looked after by every single member of staff. All of them worked so hard to ensure we had everything we needed to make the trip special.
Prior to the flying to South Africa myself and Esmaralda had communicated about any special food requests we had which including one of our guests requiring halal food. It meant on arrival everyone of us could enjoy the same delicious food that our chef Asion prepared for us either at the house or in a special location in the bush.
The safari drives were fantastic and Shane and Boiky ensured we spotted some great game.
Thankyou to all of you for looking after us so well and we hope to see you soon.

Dear Alex, thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback with the TripAdvisor community. We are so happy to hear that you and your friends had such an amazing time at Morukuru Farm House and it was wonderful to welcome you back again. The whole team (Shane, Boiky, Esmaralda, Shadrack, Asion, Suty, Rosemary, Osadi, Ingrid, Amy & Molefe) very much enjoyed hosting you all, as it was fun and laughter all the way. Shane and Boiky were happy they found the lions for you. Seeing the wild dogs for sure was a highlight too. We will make sure to stock up on Amarula for your next stay and look forward to welcoming you back! Warmest regards from all of us at Morukuru Family

We stayed for three nights in early June 2023, and we travelled as two couples (50s/60s). Owners House was definitely the highlight of all the places we stayed.

Like all places rebuilding since COVID, there were a few glitches that we experienced, with communication, especially with some new staff, being the biggest challenge. At this level of property, they should not happen, but they are all solvable.

The facilities were top-notch with our only complaint being that we were so busy we did not really get much time to enjoy it. The open showers took some getting used to, especially as one was a bit too visible from the pool.

The meals were excellent (too much food), and it was truly a private chef with a great kitchen.

You need four people really but it is worth it if you can do it.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your review and feedback! We are very happy to hear that your stay at Morukuru Owner's House was the highlight of all the places you stayed. The 2-bedroom exclusive-use Morukuru Owner's House for maximum 4 guests is perfect for small families or couples travelling together, but we also welcome quite a few couples looking for privacy and exclusivity. The team (Rochane, Emile, Gummy, Sipho, Assion, Molefe, Yvonne and Ellen) very much enjoyed hosting you. It seems you also were lucky with the sightings which included male lions up close, a cheetah on a kill and a bird sighting, which turned out to be the first spotted in Madikwe Game Reserve! We hope you will cherish the memories for a long time and look forward to welcoming you back one day. Warmest regards from all of us at Morukuru Family

Our stay at River House Morukuru was fabulous. We have been to Madikwe Reserve more than 6 times now, but this was the best lodge ever. Dohan and Anadia were perfect hosts and as a guide, Dohan was simply amazing. He gave such indepth detail about each of the animals we saw and knew a great deal about their history. It really added to the whole experience, and made you feel that you knew the animals too. We learned so much more information, despite having been on at least 20 other safaris (as its our passion).

The way he interacted with our 6 grandchildren was brilliant. No question was a silly question and he took time to chat to each of them as an individual when they sat in the front of the jeep. He made the experience fun by allowing them to sit on the tracker seat and go quickly in safe parts of the reserve, something they all loved!

Anadia was an excellent host going out of her way to accomodate requests - even finding a way of watching the Rugby when no way seemed possible!! She managed the lodge and the staff exceptioanlly. The catering was excellent and some of the dishes were stunning, with the chef creating beautiful food each mornign, lunch and evening. Every return you were greeted with a cocktail and a smile from Donald, and the lodge was always kept in immculate condition with attentive cleaning staff, despite the best efforts of the local monkeys!! One of my highlights was having an outdoor shower, whilst being scrutinsed by one such monkey!!!

A simply stunning place that we would have no hesitation in returning to, and even thought we saw an array of beautiful animals, we left knowing there was still more to offer and we are destined to retun one day!!!

Thank you Dohan, Anaadia and the team, you made our holiday a truly memorable occasion and for that we are forever grateful. All the best to you both!!

Our four-night stay at the Morukuru family Madikwe farm house was fantastic. It's almost indescribable. We were welcomed by the incredibly kind team, who ensured that everything was taken care of to perfection. Every time we had breakfast, high tea, or dinner, it was in a different place or location, always a surprise. We went on safari twice a day, which was truly a gift to experience all the beautiful animals and the stunning nature. Sleeping in the hide, in the middle of nature by a stream, was also an option. You must do it if you get the chance, what an experience. We all had a wonderful massage in the new spa, and if you were lucky, you could spot an elephant in the background. You lack absolutely nothing here. Beautiful room with luxurious beds, mosquito net, and plenty of closets. Spacious bathroom with the option of an outdoor shower. Luxurious sunbeds by the pool with an umbrella. Thank you, dear team, for all the good care and love.

This is our second visit to Morukuru; previously, we stayed at the River Lodge, and this time we experienced the Owner’s House. Traveling as a family with two young children, ages three and seven, we opted to extend our stay to five days, captivated by the serene, safe, and utterly stunning natural surroundings, abundant with wildlife. The Owner's House was nothing short of spectacular—spacious, with large bedrooms and bathrooms that blend modern amenities with the authentic essence of Africa and safari life. The house features a large, comfortably heated pool, various dining areas with views of the river, and even a spa offering treatments at our convenience. A highlight was spending a night in the treehouse, an unforgettable experience we eagerly anticipate repeating.

Manager Anadia was incredibly attentive, ensuring that everything was in perfect working order at all times, contributing significantly to the seamless experience of our stay. The culinary delights prepared by the chef catered perfectly to our tastes and requests. The dedication of the team, including Ranger Dohan and Tracker Jimmy, made every safari outing unique and memorable. They went above and beyond to ensure each safari was a singular experience, catering to our interests and ensuring we saw a diverse array of wildlife.

We left feeling exceedingly happy, with a strong desire to return as soon as possible. A heartfelt thanks to the entire Morukuru team; we look forward to our next visit and hope to see you all again.

We stayed at the River House and
the Safari experience was great and we saw many animals that we’ve never seen live and closeup before! The villa was really comfortable and Michelle, Andre, the chef and all of the staff’s service were great as they were really kind, friendly and helpful especially to us kids and they made our stay the best it could be! The food was amazing, especially the soup, salad and fried rice, the room service was also great because the laundry came quick and clean and there were also bath toys on us kids’ beds every night that we used in the bath tub! Thank you Morukuru Family for making our the highlight of our trip to South Africa and we definitely want to come again!

We just wrapped up our stay at Morukuru Family - Owners House in Madikwe and words simply don’t do it justice. The attention to detail and care from the staff is second to none, and this is a safari experience unlike any other. That’s because the lodge is 100% private to your group. From the dedicated Morukuru team to the private game drives with the most knowledgeable, friendly, and talented drivers and trackers…just stop your research and book the Owners House at Morukuru already!

We came for four nights as part of our honeymoon and our expectations were exceeded from start to finish. Our wonderful management couple duo of Paige and Dean were truly top notch, as was the food from chef Aaron, drinks and service from butler Evanz, incredible housekeeping with personal touches from Maggy, and flawless back of house management from Kgotomso.

If you want to stay in a big multi-group lodge and share game drives and meals with others, then this might not be the place for you. But honestly, why do that when you can have a team 100% focused on you, operating everything around your schedule!? 5+ stars out of 5.

Our stay here was brilliant. We’re a family of 4 with 2 girls (6 and 3) and we absolutely loved it. Personal safari to do whatever meets the families needs (we saw all the animals on our list). Top notch guides who know all about the Madikwe reserve. Personal chef who’s so experienced and makes the best impala :) Also ensures the kids are happy and makes catered food for them. We stayed at the owners house which is very clean and well kept. Nice furniture/ beds. Games for the kids during downtime. Snacks and drinks for the family whenever you need (even during safari). Surprises for the family and kids all along the way (eg gifts for kids, Easter bunny came during our stay over Easter). No thinking to do as you also have a manager that helps plan each day and coordinate staff/activities to ensure family is happy. Def recommend staying a night out in the ‘tree house’. Our girls loved hanging out with everyone when we got back from safaris, but we also had complete privacy. Soo much to do and so much fun we had. Thanks for the best memories Morukuru!!!! We miss you!

As we prepare to leave this incredible lodge, I am sad as I am leaving part of my heart and soul in this beautiful place. What makes Morukuru Magic is the incredibly kind, hard working and diligent staff who bring this special place to life. The memories we experienced with my brother (who planned the trip), sister in law, two nieces and a fiancé. My husband and I were blown away at the level of service at this 5* lodge. From the moment Emile picked us up from our transfer, to the arrival with drinks, hot towels to wash the dust off and traditional South African songs sung, to the expert guiding by Gummy and driving by Emile, seeing all of the Big 5 plus cheetah, hyena, and so many other species. To the coffee and sundown stops on game drives, picnic lunch on an all day drive, surprises which I won’t spoil for future guests, to the spa services by Victoria and Amy, Chef Asion making sure my niece had dairy free options at every delicious meal, Rhosane our INCREDIBLE manager who organized a 24th birthday surprise for my niece, rhino notching experience, visit to local school to see Good Will Foundation working, fishing on the river, Sipho’s creative cocktails and service, Osadi and Ellen housekeeping details daily with sweet touches. Emile and Gummy brought the bush to life with their expertise about tracking, animal behaviors, history of Madikwe, elephant dung tea, “stays in the hide” and most of all, their smiles and warmth. I have an anxiety disorder and they made me so safe and comfortable the entire stay. Don’t even think about staying anywhere else in South Africa!

How were the mosquitoes? Did you find them to be an issue?
Answer from Rinse W
Ommeren149 contributions108 helpful votes
Mosquitoes are not really a big issue in Madikwe, due to the dry climate. The reserve is malaria-free too. During the summer months (which brings rains and thunderstorms) there will be insects flying around, but during the dry and cooler winter months there hardly are any flying insects. The bedrooms in the houses are equipped with mosquito nets as well as airconditioners, so inside the houses you won't find many mosquitoes in any case.
Answer from Rinse W

At River House you may see animals (including elephants or buffalo) drinking from the river on the opposite bank. At Farm House you may well see various antelope species as well as monkeys, warthogs and mongoose, all like to frequent the lawns around the house. Other then that you won't see many other animals from both houses as the houses are fenced to protect our guests (including children) from predators.

Morukuru Family Madikwe is most certainly NOT a hunting lodge. Hunting is not allowed in Madikwe Game Reserve. The picture you will have seen is that of conservation work being done in the reserve, funded by Morukuru Goodwill Foundation. Guests can sometimes witness this and get close to the animals when the vet is busy working. For more information you can check the 'Safaris with a Purpose" package that we offer at Morukuru Family Madikwe. When the guests refer to 'hunting down the lion' they refer to the tracking and following of the lions in the bush, trying to locate them.
