If peaceful, rustic, out of the way is what you are looking for, this is the place for you..It's beautiful. The staff are super efficient and the chef produced superb meals. With two game drives a day, you are sure to see plenty, including some of the big 5, although we would have liked more information on the ecology, vegetation and bugs of the area.

Thakadu's staff have now set the standard for me in how a lodge should be run. I got the true sense that they liked what they do and that nothing was too much trouble. The food was absolutely devine, the rooms were incredibly spacious and comfortable and I cannot fault a single aspect of our experience.

Had a 3 night stay here and thoroughly enjoyed everything about it, we really felt at home. Vincent was an excellent guide, very experienced and knowledgeable, we saw lots of animals. The tents were clean, comfortable and warm. Food was delicious. One afternoon we saw a large group of elephants of all ages at the waterhole in front of the lodge, which was an amazing experience. They provide blankets and hot water bottles in the trucks when you go out in the morning which is a very good idea as it can be a bit chilly first thing.
For those who miss their wifi you can log on in the main lodge area.
If anyone from the lodge reads this, we thought it would be nice for guests to have a couple of wildlife and birdlife reference books in the main lodge/lounge area to look at.

We were blown away with the service and treatment received at Thakadu, all we can say is wow! The team could not do enough to ensure our stay was memorable, Sipho was an absolute star escorting us every night and ensuring we were safe and happy. Billy our Ranger, all I can say is hold onto this gem, how he managed to find the game we saw was unbelievable, he even had rangers from other camps thanking him for the sightings. How anyone can spot a chameleon on the dark whilst driving and shining the spot light is beyond me considering the size and yip Billy managed to do that. The lodge staff were very pleasant and accommodating, we could not have wished for a better 21st wedding anniversary getaway.

The lodge and the facilities were overwhelming and luxurious. Excellent food and service. We so much enjoyed the game drives with Gary. He was really very committed and explained to us everything Madikwe reserve is known for.
There was only one thing that surprised us: On the day of our arrival we came in at 3:20 pm. Check-in was between 2 and 5 pm we we told. We started with an interesting game drive right away after a warm reception. At night we had a great dinner. We booked for 2 nights, i. e. 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners, 4 game drives. As we didn’t have lunch the first day, we expected to get lunch on our departure day. But the manager was real strict and told us that we missed our lunch on the first day as we arrived at 3:20 pm only (Check-in 2-5pm!). To us it didn’t seem logical. She denied us the 2nd lunch which we paid for. That didn’t quite match the overall excellent impression we had of the friendly and very attentive staff. Because of the manager we take of one star in terms of service.

Would recommend Thakadu River Camp without reservation. Stayed here for 4 nights in October 2022. The staff are fantastic - so welcoming and helpful. Special thanks to Agnes, who always greeted us with a smile, asking us how we were and who has a lovely singing voice! Sylvia looked after us superbly and has a wonderful voice. Ada was also so helpful. Joyce produced lovely food and super veggie options for me. The boma was a highlight - romantic setting and great food Our guide was the amazing Satis! Great tracking skills, knowledgeable and happy to answer all questions. Saw 4/5, a cheetah, hyena, giraffe, wild dogs, crocodile, etc. Spent one morning tracking a lion - what an experience. The interactions between the different animals were incredible to witness. Rooms very comfortable. Superb location overlooking the river and you can see the elephants bathing in the water while having a glass of wine. Drinks aren't free but are cheap. Would love to go back!

We had an amazing stay at this camp.

On arrival we were treated to a lovely drink, and sat down for lunch. The chef came to tell us what they had prepared, and they were so friendly and welcoming.

The food was amazing, and you certainly will not go hungry with breakfast, lunch, high tea and dinner!

We got to try some traditional South African food, beautiful salads and amazing desserts.

Our tour guide was Gery, and he was fantastic! He was very knowledgable, and friendly. Making us laugh all the time, and teaching us so much about the animals, plants and insects. He made us feel like family. My parents love birds, and he took time to identify different birds in the reserve, and told us interesting facts about them. He made us feel really special.

All the staff were really kind, we felt incredibly spoilt after a fantastic dinner, going to the room and it was ready for us, lovely and warm, with sweets on the pillow.

The chefs were also really lovely and friendly, and really amazingly talented at what they do. The food is truly prepared with love and expertise.

We really are the luckiest people in the world and thank you for welcoming us, and making us feel like part of your family. We will be back.

Thadaku camp made our photo safari that much better! The staff went above and beyond to make our stay lovely. For my birthday, I was presented with a cake and a singing/dancing performance! Our room was kept clean and furnished with all we could possibly need.

Fantastic place to stay. Quiet peaceful and incredibly well run. The staff were helpful polite nothing too much trouble. All our game drives were spectacular you certainly get up close and personal with the animals and the rangers were informative interesting and went out of their way to make sure we saw as many animals as possible. Small jeeps small tracks and we even went completely off road to catch site of a small pack of wild dogs. Brilliant! I would highly recommend this game lodge. Thank you for the experience. We loved it.

Brilliant! Loved that it was a community project so a little rustic as less formal. The staff were warm & friendly. The food exquisite. Exclusive feel with only 12 tents with a jovial spirit amongst the guests which we really enjoyed. Note - 9 & 10 are far but good for walking off all that food! Also no WIFI in tents but you are so busy on game drives or eating that it was OK to use it only in lobby. Our game driver Satis went above and beyond to find us the big 5!! And Agnes is an Angel. All I can recommend to make it better is to get thicker blankets and lined rain ponchos 😁

1. August is probably the coldest month in SA. Although Madikwe has moderate winters, morning and evenings can be fairly chilly. Definitely long pants, beanies and scarfs recommended. On the vehicles ponchos are available, but dress warm. Layering recommended. Even in Africa 3 degrees is cold 2. Days cam be very pleasant. Spending time at pool on the deck; - yes. Swimming for the brave. 3. Small curious shop available. Payment in Rands. Cards accepted. Normal SA restaurant prices. 4. Re plugs; can 't say. SA 2 prong plugs similar to continental Europe.

Hi, it may be a bit of a rush but you will be able to leave by 9:15am. Chat to the lodge so you can check out and settle your bill the night before and arrange a breakfast pack because you will not have time for breakfast. Let your ranger know as well so he can make sure to get you back in time. What time of the year are you planning to go - in the winter months the game drive leaves a later.

The tents are closed tight and also have doors, as the structure is partly built in bricks. Be careful as the monkeys are super fast at sneaking inside the tent, they are always after the sweets and sugar sachets.

We drove ourselves to Takadu river lodge but l know a trusted shuttle service that l can recommend. They operate in Johannesburg and take customers to Madikwe, Pilanesberg and Kruger. They pick you up from the hotel or the airport. I have used their service several times. Contact Alan Bilbrough - African Journeys
