We have not visited Madikwe National Park before and found it very different from the Sabi Sands. It is more open and the roads rougher! We arrived in bad weather so the plane was unable to land at the West airstrip and we had to go to the East airstrip instead and transfer by road to the lodge, a trip that should only have taken an hour but took much longer and we had two separate encounters with male elephants who didn't like the vehicle and also two rhinos. This necessitated much reversing of the car until the animals backed off and left us alone - exciting stuff! We found all the staff to be welcoming and friendly. Particular thanks to Elaine, Eva, Gift, Pearl, Thomas and Amos. We went to this area to try and see cheetah and saw 2 cheetah. We also saw lions, including two magnificent males, lots of elephants, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, rhino, jackal, warthog with young, and several species of antelopes. Dining with a view over the waterhole was a bonus and watching animals turn up to drink. The food was excellent and they catered well for my husband who requires gluten free food. We had a meal in the boma one evening with African dancing and singing by the staff and it was good to see how much the staff enjoyed this, as did we. The only negatives in our opinion were that the rooms need refurbishment as they are somewhat tired and dark and we particularly disliked the animal skin headboard complete with mane (this is a place where people come to watch live animals yet it is furnished like an old hunting lodge). We also felt unsafe with no phone in the room - you are given a two-way radio to call for help if you needed to. Twice we had to use it and both times it was unanswered. Also we are used to a tracker (person sitting on the bonnet) as well as a ranger on the safari vehicle, and used to the ranger having a rifle with him but our ranger was unarmed. Added to this the radio on the vehicle had got wet in a rain storm and didn't work so we felt very vulnerable indeed. Other than these few points, we had an enjoyable time at the lodge.

Dear Royal Friends, Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback regarding your recent stay with us. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and that the staff made such an lasting impression on you both. Yes the game reserve is quite different to the Sabi Sands with much harder terrain however it balanced your trip between the 2 different parks that you visited during your trip to South Africa. And you managed to tick off the cheetah which you came for! The dining with a view of the waterhole is always an extra plus and you never know what might pop in at the waterhole during your meal. We hope that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back to the Royal Madikwe again. Wild wishes, Elaine & The Royal Madikwe Team

From the moment we arrived at The Royal Madikwe and were handed warm, lavender scented hand towels, all of our needs and wants were anticipated before we knew they existed! From the decor to the staff to the food, every detail was paid attention to. Every time we showed up for a meal it was a surprise where or how they had set us up. One night it was by the infinity pool. Another day we sat by the watering hole and watched the elephants come by. It was all so lovely!
Our room was large and beautiful! Complete with outdoor shower! Every night at turn down there was another surprise here too.
There were 2 gentlemen that helped us in the lodge. One is named Happy and the other is Gift. Need I say more?
And then there was Ernie, our ranger. He’s been in the reserve for 17 years and know it, the animals and the other rangers incredibly well! He bought us to see 4 month old lion cubs and a pack of wild dogs on the prowl. And he customized our days as it was only us and another couple at the lodge. He was charming, smart and funny. He made each ride an incredible adventure.
I would highly recommend The Royal Madikwe Lodge. I’ll be back!

We had an absolutely incredible experience at the Royal Madikwe. Cherie and Adam are great hosts and anticipate all your needs. They surprised us at every meal setting us up at different locations within the lodge all with wonderful views. The food that chef Zoukie prepared was Michelin star quality with fabulous flavors and presentation. Joseph looked after us most meal times and was the happiest and smiliest person I’ve ever met. Special thanks also to Happiness and Gift . Of course the stars of the holiday were the animals. We had 2 game drives a day by our ranger Ernie who was simply the best . His love of the animals and the park made our experience very special and it was a privilege to go out on the drives with him. We saw elephants, buffalo, rhino, cheetahs, lions, kudu, hyenas, wild dogs, zebra, wildebeest, warthogs, impala, giraffe, vultures and more. We were lucky enough to see the elusive leopard one evening too. Everything about this holiday surpassed our expectations and we cannot thank everybody involved enough.

My wife, myself, my 12 year old son and 7 year old daughter went to South Africa for 2 weeks. We went to Cape Town, Franschhoek (wine tasting), Grootbos (whale watching) and then onto Royal Madikwe for 3 days of safari. We should have stayed at least 5 days.

We flew in on a private plane from Joburg and were met on the run way by Ernie, our private ranger for our stay. Ernie was amazing, very friendly and gave us a wonderful experience driving us around the reserve, working to our schedule and putting up with all our animal questions with a smile. We saw lions, rhinos, wild dogs, giraffes, elephants, hyenas, crocodiles, cheetah etc.

The lodge is on a lake/watering hole so you have animals 50 metres from your villa and the main villa (all very safe though), where food and drink is served. We had elephants, rhinos and lots of other animals there almost continuously.

Obviously the safari trips at 5.30am then at 4pm were amazing but Adam (co-owner, who lives there with his family) and all the team were amazing, treating us like royalty. We had our own private chef and unlimited food and drink on demand. In fact we were the only people staying at the time so had the whole team just for us!!

We are a family with young kids and they did archery, bead making, painting t-shirts etc with the kids which was great. I know they have honeymooners and groups with no kids, including movie stars. The team there are like a big family and they made us very welcome, teaching us to play the drums, movie night with the kids etc.

My kids LOVED IT, and are already asking when we can go back and find the elusive leopard (the only animal we couldn’t find!!).

So I’d highly recommend Royal Madikwe for the highest level of luxury accommodation and customer service, food and drink and also for making the safari trips such a great experience (Ernie and Adam).

I stayed at the Royal Madikwe in early September, for two nights. It was an amazing experience. The safari itself was unforgettable, our safari guide, TJ, was very knowledgeable and made sure we got some amazing photographs, without disturbing the animals. The food was fabulous! Being a foodie and enjoying a good meal - the food deserves a mention as it was delicious! I was very relieved that all the staff took COVID protocols very seriously, I felt very safe and comfortable throughout my visit. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly.
A very memorable visit .....would definitely return. South Africa is a very special country - the best safari experience to date.

We visited the Royal as a Milestone Birthday weekend for my husband and it did not disappoint.

We stayed in the Royal villa which beautifully catered for a family of 4 and gave us ample space and privacy to enjoy our family getaway. The villa is situated right in front of a watering hole so there was constant wildlife activity. Elephants, buffalo, and a range of buck are in abundance at the watering hole.

Meals were served at the main lodge which is a short walk from the villa. The food was 6 * and I could not fault a single meal! I loved how at every meal time they would have set our table in a different space in the lodge depending on the weather or mood for the day.

We had our 2 daughters with us age 3 and 9 and they absolutely loved the special attention given to their needs whether it was milkshakes or art nothing was too much for the staff at the Royal.

We spent 7 nights in the Royal Villa which was stunning…
The lodge is beautiful and with the waterhole we have a permanent game drive.
We have been treated “Royal” all the people were totally dedicated, kind and always trying to make us King, Thanks Sushi, Zouki, Shorty, Rasta , Gift, Pride, Happy….and of course the two bosses , Chérie and Adam who were everywhere.

We were impressed by the family atmosphere in the Lodge congrats to Cherie and Adam.
We had wonderful sightseeing.

Regarding the food our two chefs Sushi and Zouki were simply awesome.

We already did roughly 50 lodges in Africa…Royal Madikwe is one of the best.

Clearly, we will come back.

Thanks everyone.

From the moment we arrived at the Madikwe airstrip, I knew we were in for a treat. Ernie, our guide, met us and loaded our luggage. He was as nice as could be. It was very hot and he had cold waters ready for us when we got in the vehicle. On the 30 minute ride to Royal Madikwe, we saw giraffes, elephants, white rhinos, Cape buffalo and impalas.
We were blown away by the wildlife.
We arrived at the gate and drove up to the lodge where we were greeted by the whole staff. We were handed cold towels to cool off and a welcome drink. The staff promptly took our bags to our private villa overlooking the watering hole. We made our way down the beautiful walking path to the main lodge. Everything was pristine and beautiful in and around the lodge.
We were introduced to all of the staff and given a quick tour. We really felt as though we were royalty.
It just so happened we were the only guests there for the three nights we booked. Every meal and every game drive was a personal experience.
Royal Madikwe’s whole staff and Management went above and beyond in every detail possible.
The meals were out of this world by Head chef Zukki and Su chef Sevu.
I would say that these were the best meals my wife and I have ever had!
Cherie ,Gift, Joseph, Wena and the rest of the staff made our stay more than memorable!
The game drives with Ernie were
Extraordinary! He went out of his way to track elusive animals and had 100% success. We saw everything there was to see and then some.
There was always non stop activity at the lodge watering hole.
The last night was really special as we were entertained by the staff with authentic music and drumming. We all got involved and had such a great time under the stars and around the fire.
If I could rate Royal Madikwe 6 stars , I would the experience was that good!!!!!
