This year our family celebrated an 80th birthday, a 60th, 2x 21sts (including partner) and two COVID-constrained graduations and we celebrated it all over four days at the Great Fish River Lodge. The care taken over every aspect of our stay from the daily celebrations to the magnificent guiding and game viewing was absolutely next level and we have nothing but praise for the guiding and lodge teams. From the daily wake up calls from the lioness with three cubs across the river to the extremely knowledge guiding, the unbelievable food and the care shown for our elderly parents we were treated royally and had an unforgettable experience. Thank you so much to Ivan and Sibo, Lucy and Vusi, Stacey and Bongi, head chef Jaco and your respective teams - you were all amazing.

Our family had multiple special celebrations all falling in 2021, post lockdown. From many options we selected Kwandwe, Great Fish River Lodge as our destination. It is a massive, big 5 reserve in the easy access Easter Cape and being malaria free was a big bonus vs the reserves in the northern part of the country. We were a party of nine adults and our accommodation at the lodge was outstanding. Very generous sized suites with their own plunge pools and the lack of game fences meant that the animals have free passage into the area around the lodge which makes it feel authentic and very exciting (if unsuited to small children). We had planned a series of celebrations spanning the four days and nights of our stay. We communicated these to the team ahead of our stay and they came back with suggestions that exceeded all our expectations. The reality was even better. Our every need was attended to in the most minute detail. They looked after my parents who are both in their 80s with great care, consideration and sensitivity. Nothing was too much trouble. Jaco the chef and his team produced one magnificent meal/ treat/ tea/ snack after another all focused around our dietary requirements. Stacey manages the lodge with admirable calm and professionalism and everyone seemed happy and clear on their individual roles. Ivan and Lucy with their trackers Sibo and Vusi, were our game viewing experts and I can confidently say that after many safari trips, they were the best by far. We had incredible sightings of the big five and so much more. We cannot ever adequately express what a wonderful time we had and we will be eternally grateful to the entire team for making this a once in a lifetime experience. We cannot recommend Kwandwe highly enough.

A wonderful venue. The Great Fish River lodge is luxurious & spacious. Food is good, service is excellent & the staff cannot do enough to please & make sure you are happy. Fantastic game viewing with big 5 sightings plentiful. Interesting lush bush and topography surrounding the river. Game all looked in prime condition. Knowledgeable & charming Ranger Dave with Tracker SIsa in the know at all times. As good as anything in Mpumalanga or Limpopo in the same price bracket. A must visit for those who want a 5 star game experience that is malaria free & a short drive from the Garden Route.

I’ve thought long and hard how to review Kwandwe. The rooms are beautiful with lovely attention to detail, the game drives amazing, meals were abundant and delicious, and the staff friendly and welcoming. Kwandwe is a 5 star property that is very rich in nature and animals, and it’s certainly understandable that occasionally they intersect. Unfortunately for us our initial room (Room #2) was infested with bats. On the first morning we woke up to find a dead bat laying on a chair. We didn’t think too much of it, but when we returned from the afternoon game drive we could see 2 more bats flying around in our room. We called for help from the front desk. It quickly became apparent that there was no way to get all the bats out of our room as by now we could count 6 bats with more screeching in the rafters. They were on the drapes, on the floor, on the bed, and unbeknownst to my husband one was in his shoe. We requested a new room and were moved later that night. Unfortunately, my husband put his foot into the shoe the bad was in, and although he killed the bat with this action, we have no idea if he was bitten by the bat or otherwise exposed to its saliva. From the research I did, rabies is rare in bats in South Africa, but not unheard of. For a disease that is 100% fatal, there is not much room for error. After researching both the information put out by WHO for South Africa and contacting the CDC in the US it was most strongly recommended that we get the rabies post exposure vaccines. Rabies vaccines (4 of them plus the immunoglobulin) are a 3 week ordeal. Expensive ordeal. I contacted Kwandwe to advise them of the issue and they offered a 40% discount on a future stay. Nice gesture, but totally unrealistic when you live in the US – it could be a decade before we get back to South Africa. My request for reimbursement of my medical bill copayment fell on deaf ears for a couple of months, until my travel agent got involved. My request was actually for a sum that was less than the “40% off offer.” Kwandwe has completely washed their hands of the ordeal saying they have no liability, and actually dismissed the recommendations of our US doctor. Very disappointing outcome from a property seemingly as classy and upstanding as Kwandwe appeared. For that I give it a 2 star rating.
