I found this lodge through many suggestions on a Facebook group and researching them all. I chose Umlani due to its more eco friendly approach. Someone said you get a 5 star experience in a 3 star stay and I’d say that to be very true. If you want luxury this may not be for you but the huts you stay in are amazing with an outside shower. Solar power. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. Warm, scented towels await when you return from a drive. Sundowners on the drive was wonderful and morning snacks and coffee. You can drive very close to the animals and have some amazing animal experiences. We were have a sundowner at a watering hole and 25+ elephants came in to bathe and drink all around us. So neat! Elvis and Lucky were great guides and trackers. We also stayed in the tree house a night and it’s one I will never forget. Waking to elephants under the tree and hippos in the pond. Surreal. And the food was amazing! Loved it all and highly recommend!

Umlani Bushcamp is probably the best experience we have had as a group on safari. From the very first moment we felt comfortable and safe. We can recommend Umlani Bushcamp to anyone who wants to experience a top class game drive. The camp is family run and you can see this in so many lovely details. All the staff are very courteous, friendly and helpful. This extraordinary experience is rounded off by traditional food of the absolute top class. We will definitely be traveling to Umlani Bushcamp again and are already looking forward to seeing you all again. Best regards, Alex and friends :-)

Wonderful place. The place is just a dream, full of wild animals just at your door, elephants in front of the pool and other animals come to say hi. The receptionist was lovely, explained everything and is a real sunshine, thanks for welcoming guest like you do. About the accommodation, we had the hunt and it’s just the best place to stay to be in connection with nature but with comfort. We had a family hunt, 3 beds (2 singles 1 double) all perfectly comfortable with their mosquito net. The bathroom is outside for the shower you can shower under the stars with hot water, just perfect. The double hunt is composed with a double bed and is beautifully decorated, the bathroom is also outside the highlight of the day! The food is delicious and the vegetarian option also, to avoid food waste when there is a few people you have a special dish not a buffet style. But otherwise the food is a buffet with several options, they always ask what you dislike. Breakfast is a buffet plus hits dish options like omelettes bacon etc. Lunch is on the terrace from where you can see animals like elephants coming to drink up the hill. Diner is at the table, buffet style with amazing meat cooked with their African style. Beverages included is the best, you can choose what you want all the time to relax at the pool or to take on game drives. And their cocktails are super good! About game drives, our guide Elvis knows the nature from the inside and was able to give us an unforgettable experience with his traditions, his knowledge and his passion. It was fascinating to track some cheetahs and following them through the bush thanks to Elvis and our tracker who did an amazing job, what an experience! We also had the chance to stay at the treehouse, you are on our own over there, with beds and you can enjoy the view of the wildlife: we saw elephants, giraffes and others from there it’s like being on Tarzan for real. You can stay there by night, to sleep over. Quite an adventure to be honest, if you do not fear to hear some noises from up there in the inside and are able to sleep in the wild you should try it, a once in a lifetime experience. All the staff is just wonderful, we created memories that will last forever thanks to them, their kindness and warmth, we played guitare and sang along with them, talked about their culture and lives, some interesting stories about the place also, you should ask them :p We meet one of the designers of Umlani and we want to say a huge congratulations to the amazing work they all did, this place is a treasure and a real wonder it’s been our favorite lodge in Africa so far. Big thanks to everyone on the team who made the trip there a great experience.

We loved the Umlani experience, while the accommodation may not provide the luxury of some other camps they are nevertheless very comfortable. More importantly, Umlani is small camp which gives it a very friendly feel with both staff and fellow visitors. The service and food were excellent, but ultimately it's about the game drives which were outstanding including the optional bush walk. Overall a great value safari camp and highly recommend.

This is a good camp in a great location in Timbavati. We stayed for 2 nights and enjoyed our stay. The room itself (a family rondavel sleeping 3) was ok - a bit dark inside and slightly awkwardly designed for 3 people ( would be better with a door to the bathroom rather than a curtain!). We were staying during a heatwave so it was hard to cool down. The bar and lunch area is nicely positioned and the dinner area is beautifully lit and decorated for dinner. The small pool is a blessing for the heat but they need more seats/loungers down by the pool to cater for everyone during the daytime when everyone is back from the drives. The food was good quality and the staff pleasant. The safari drives were good as they use radios to make sure the different lodges do not crowd out the animals, however our guide did not turn his radio down or have an earpiece so we constantly heard the radio chatter which was disturbing, especially once positioned next to an animal to observe it. This should be improved upon. Overall i think this is a good value camp in a great reserve. Timbavati is a big reserve with lots of animals - with great game viewing generally.

In my past life I ran a high end Safari business, and was lucky enough to experience the very best of what Africa has to offer...so I'm totally spoiled. For our new business (fashion, not travel) we took all of our staff and their families for a 3 day breakaway to Umlani. What Umlani has to offer is a totally unique, authentic bush experience that's affordable for South Africans. What an incredible trip. The game viewing was really fantastic, the guides, Amos and Elvis so knowledgable, such characters, every member of the staff went out of their way to make it a memorable stay and the food was delicious. Micaela looked after our every need and tailored everything to meet our specific needs. For me the best was watching the kids (ages 7 to 14) experience the 'real' bush for the first time...The wonder, all the questions, none of them ever missed a game drive. This will change their lives forever. Thank you Marco, Marie, Micaela for putting this all together for us.
