My wife and I were blown away by the quality of offering from Thabamati. Literally perfect service and facilities. It is technically a tented camp but the rooms are so nice you will forget that instantly. The managing staff treat you like royalty (Mich and Charl) and all the other employees are so nice (Moses, Mbuso). Food is phenomenal and endless. We elected to do a private safari vehicle and they are staffed by a driver/guide and a full-time spotter. Incredible skills to spot animals, our spotter (Sam) found 3 chameleons…at night… and the driver (Wiann) was so enjoyable and knowledgeable about the area/wildlife.

If you plan to go to Kruger, this is the place to stay.

An amazing experience in every way. We were a group of 7 friends—2 couples and 3 college aged kids that stayed and so had the whole camp. The
“Tents” are amazing! Luxurious, comfortable and impeccably decorated. Loved waking up to the sounds of the local hippo (“Michael”, as in Phelps). The housekeeping “fairies” would think of every need and beyond and seemingly did it by magic as you rarely even saw those lovely ladies. We would find port and chocolates at night and even returned from dinner one night to a warm bath with rose petals awaiting us.

Charel was a our game guide (and helps out a ton around the camp) and gave us an unforgettable experience with the animals. Saw the big 5 and more—including a pride of lions who had (very) recently taken down a Cape buffalo. But it is so much more than just the “big 5”. Loved the wild dogs and learning so much about all the animals that we saw. Saw so much and he was so full of knowledge about all of it from the animals to the plants to the way everything interacts.

Mich and the rest of the staff do such a great job of making the most of your experience. One of the girls on our trip had a birthday during our stay and they even put up Happy Birthday signs and made a birthday cake for her.

It is such an amazing and unique experience to have an adventure and yet feel completely pampered by people that when you leave, you will actually miss. The hospitality is unlike anything that I have experienced before and I feel fairly well traveled in places that are known for their hospitality.

Would recommend Thabamati to any kind of traveler without reservation.

Wow, at a loss for words to describe how amazing Thabamati eco game lodge is in this review. Our expectations were continuously exceeded. The rooms are superbly decorated with an incredibly comfortable over sized king bed and overly spacious mosquito net. The shower had excellent water pressure and the host had a hot bath filled with rose petals waiting for us after an afternoon safari. Totally unexpected yet utterly divine! The food was simply delicious and the portion size was just right amount. The staff are so friendly and go above and beyond at all times. Our guide Brett went out of his way to make sure we saw all 5 of the Big 5, and then some!!!!

What makes this lodge so unique is that every room, the common lounge and dining area are situated right in front of a very large watering hole. What a special experience to watch the animals come to drink throughout the day, listen to the birds sing or get woken up to the sounds of the hippos. It was truly a magical experience and a trip of a lifetime. Highly recommended.

Thabamati is a jewel in the African Bush. My husband and I were lucky enough to stay here on our honeymoon. When travels to South Africa became tricky and our trip became delayed due to airline cancellations, Thabamati THANKFULLY had a space to accommodate us, and we now cannot imagine our trip without it. To begin, the location and grounds are just stunningly gorgeous. The "tents" are comfortable and clean, and I only put that in quotes because it certainly does not feel like you are in a tent. You will have a gorgeous bathroom with intricate details and a nice soaking tub. Since it was our honeymoon, the staff went above and beyond to make our space romantic and welcoming. The staff also get to know you personally and make your stay feel authentic and unique. The grounds are located in the middle of the bush and nearby a watering hole, so animals come and go outside often, and you are able to marvel at their beauty while enjoying your breakfast! Charlie is a phenomenal safari guide. His knowledge of the animals and his deep appreciation for them provide for an educational safari ride. He is also present on the grounds for a walking safari, and is a joy to have the early morning coffee with. Throughout the safari, you will get to stop and enjoy delicious coffee and home-baked pastries in the morning, and a cocktail and a snack in the evening. Charlie makes hummus from scratch like you've never had before! His wife Mich, who runs the grounds, takes special care to get to know you. She was meticulous in noting my dietary restrictions, and was kind and delightful to be around. The food was ASTOUNDING and some of the most delicious we had on our entire trip. Overall, we cannot recommend this beautiful place enough!!

Mich, Charel and the rest of the staff were amazing. Walking in, my husband and I were blown away by the attention to detail and care each member gave to us during our stay. Do not hesitate to book this accommodation, it may be labeled as tent camping, but it was the nicest accommodations we’ve visited. Moses and Bmuso always greeted us with hot beverages upon our return from the game drive. The house keeping ladies created a beautiful sanctuary for us to turn in to each night. Godsave, the chef created some of the most delicious meals we’ve tasted and Oscar, our tracker, was able to help us find all of the big 5 and so much more. Mich and Charel, the dynamic duo, went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. Mich’s attention to detail and little surprises throughout our stay, made us feel so special and Charlie’s ability to engage us in the safari by teaching us about the animals we encountered along the way was so intriguing. During down time, it was so fun watching the wild life from the deck come and visit the watering hole. We wish everyone at Thabamati the best and hope to visit again some day, it was an experience we will never forget and will be talking about for years to come.

So delighted to have chosen this place. We did lots of research and chose here for 2 nights and 3 nights at a larger camp. The tents are just as wonderful as they look in the photos, tastefully designed with lots f thoughtful touches. Food was excellent, well presented and we heard them happy to make diet changes for others. Lovely to sit by the fire pit after dinner. You will not go hungry! Relaxing deck area and nothing is too much trouble. Mich or someone is always around to help with anything, thoughtful touches such as hot water bottles elevate this camp to a high level. Our game drives with Charle and Oscar were great. His personal knowledge and interesting stories made for great memories. Last minute booking meant availability was only for 2 nights…we would happily have stayed 4. If you are looking for a luxury tented intimate safari book this place without hesitation. It’s a safari version of one of the Small luxury hotels of the world!

Thabamati was our last stop on a two week visit to South Africa. We debated spending a little less to book our stay at a “commercial” lodge but are SO GLAD we decided to upgrade our accommodations. For starters, this entire lodge is brand new and provides a luxurious sanctuary in the middle of the Timbavati preserve. This reserve allows for better viewing as there are many less safari groups out at any given time.
Our accommodations were exactly as pictured and we were blown away by the level of service and attention to detail from Mich and her staff. Moses and Mboso were extra attentive and served up the most delicious meals and cocktails. Charlie and Oscar were our game drive guides and they did not disappoint. Oscars eye for identifying tracks and scouting the movement of animals was very impressive. Charlie’s extensive knowledge of the preserve and wildlife was key in our ability to view the big 5+ much more!
I would highly recommend to anyone interested in a Safari. The accommodations were outstanding, meals were incredible, and the service was next to none! Thanks again Mich and Charlie for everything during our stay! Hope to see you guys again soon.

A truly luxurious camp with a very beautiful laid out central lounge; the use of local woods in a very modern design is breathtaking.
The design is copied into the tents and gives a warm and rich feeling. The view from the lounge, the infinity pool and the tents towards the hippo dam is special.

We flew in from the Parfuri area: a very comfortable way of crossing the Kruger from the north into the southern parts.
From our arrival to our farewell, we felt pampered and special; we were sorry that our visit was reduced to 2 nights: an additional 2 would not have been regretted.

The safari experience was made special due to the sighting of a white lion, the icon of Timbavati, munching away at a rhino (killed during a fight) and vultures and hyena’s cleaning a karkas of another fight victim. Also the short bush walk with 2 guides made an impression on us. This part of Sabi Sands differs from the south and due to the season it was still very green and leafy.. Animal spotting is quite a challenge in these circumstances, but Kobus and Oscar did very well.

We visited the camp for 3 nights as part of a family trip to SA in Dec 22. Transfer from Hoedspruit / Eastgate airport was seamless. 2 Adults and 2 teenagers. We were in tents 3 & 4, which whilst identical, 3 is probably slightly more prime for viewing the waterhole, 4 gives you a little more peace and quiet.
The camp only really opened in 2020 and everything is in tip top condition. The staff are well trained and provided a high level of service in the middle of the bush.
Food was exceptional - settings and table dressings thoughtful and quality of food was high across all three main meals.
Safari - in 3 days we saw the ‘Big 5’ but of course the open nature of Thambavati / greater Kruger does not guarantee anything. Our guide/tracker team were Kobus and Caswell. They had a great knowledge of Birdlife and also local fauna and flora.
The other guests were local South Africans who regularly go on safari all round Southern Africa and they were really happy with their experience as well.
We did 3 full days and I would say that would be the minimum. It is a really great place to be in the Bush for the safari / nature, whilst also being able to relax in very comfortable surroundings. We made use of spa treatments from one of the permanent staff, which were really nice and done in your room.
One note - the walking tour for about an hour after breakfast is really worth it but there (quite rightly) is a strict min age of 16.
All in all a fantastic experience.

From the very first moment that you set foot in this place, you immediately feel how amazing it is. The camp consists of individual tents in a private, remote, beautiful, tranquail place. The managers, Charlie and Mich and the staff are all so friendly and make you feel relaxed at all times. The infinatity pool overlooks a pond taht has a resident hippo. The food was incredible and catered for all. The game drives provided by Charlie were really great and he is so knowledgable, keeping everyone engrossed with interesting facts about the surroundings and wildlife. A truly beautiful place and an amazing stay was had by all, thanks to Thabamati for making the start of our holiday in South Africa so memorable.
