We arrived Xmas Eve for two nights with 4 game drives and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thanks to George at Trailfinders for finding this gem.

The accommodation was first-class, as was the dining. Thanks to Niyko for looking after us in a professional manner and always with a smile. Dinner on Xmas eve and Xmas day created a festive atmosphere. The whole team were very attentive.

Matt was an encyclopaedia of knowledge (does he have a PhD n Zoology?) and made the game drives truly amazing - we saw the Big 5 on two occasions.

Ross, our butler, was charming and suggested a secret beach at Boulders Beach, near our next destination at Cape Town - we found and enjoyed the beach.

We will return to Waterside Lodge.

We so look forward to visiting Waterside Lodge and yet again we received the warmest of welcomes from Matt, Anet and Bango. The meals were expertly served by our ever-attentive butler, Mr T. In the bar, Albert has an amazing memory and our drinks appeared like magic every evening..!
Matt and Antony ensured that we had many varied experiences on the game drives, including elephants playing in the mud and water, a leopardess and her son with their kill and, of course, great viewings of lions.
Anet leads a great team who ensures that Waterside is an all-round wonderful experience. Special thanks also to Rebecca, who constantly checked that everything was perfect for us.
As we've said so often before, many thanks to Matt and Anet.
Finally, brace yourselves folks - we'll be back!

It was my second time at Waterside, the first one was in 2016, both experience were great.
It's a lovely place: clean, good food, well organize and amazing sighting during the game drive conducted by ranger and tracker with an hight level of knowledge.
The only thing I'd like to report is that the blonde young lady at the reception, I think is name is Rebecca, wasn't professional with us and clearly not interested to her job but more interested to her cellphone. We went at the reception after dinner to tell her a little problem we had in the room and she answered in a very disinterested and arrogant way.
The day after the other ladies were really nice and helpful.
In a 5 stars lodge the people make the difference.

Hi there Flyer828347, thank-you so much for leaving this review of your stay at Waterside Lodge. We love hearing from return guests and we're equally pleased that you had a good time, however we're really sorry to hear about the lack of professional service received from our front of house staff! This is not what we expect from our team members, especially since we are committed to guest service excellence. Thank-you for bringing your experience to our attention, we will be looking into this with Lodge Management to make sure this doesn't happen again.

We stayed four days at the Thornybush Waterside Lodge. Everything was perfect from our pretty cottage to the excellent food to our twice daily safari outings. Our driver/ guide Louis was exceptional at finding the animals, all of the "big five"and so much more. he was a wealth of information about tracking, animal habits, native plants. They guides work in great concert with one another so that all the safari groups get a chance to see everything possible. It made for an exceptional experience.

Thornybush Game Reserve was AMAZING. The lodge is beautiful, the staff is amazing, and the general experience was unforgettable. We had Enock and Freddy as our ranger and tracker and every single one of our game drives was so memorable. We saw the Big 5 and SO MUCH more! Cannot say enough about this place.

This lodge is not a star experiance. For the price you pay, there are much better big five game lodges. The game view were very good, but the property is over populated with roads and game viewers. The lodges chalet, shower and basin was block and I requested twice that somebody fixes it. On capable person to sort it out. The lodge it self is run down. Grass is dead, thatched room are not maintained. Service of certain staff is not star standard.

Myself and my wife had a 3 night stay in the Thronybush waterside lodge. Firstly we flew into hoedspruit from Johannesburg. The flight said it would take 50 minutes but it was more like 30 minutes and it was a smallish plane holding 74 people. The plane was not full about 50 people. The fligh was OK and not too bumpy for those who are scared of flying.

we arrived in the airport which is a small hut and a tractor brought our cases off the plane and park them and collect them at the side of the road. Our pick up was with illios and they where waiting for us.

They drove us to the private game reserve and on the way we seen two of the big 5, buffalo and elephant. The drive took around 30-40 minutes it would be so much faster but the roads are really bumpy ad they drive slow.

arrived at the lodge and we where met at reception with a cold towel and ginger bear drink in a champagne glass. we where told to sit on the porch viewing the hippo which was very beautiful. we left our luggage at reception while the girl on reception took us around the lodge. We where shown too our lodge which was lodge 1 the closest and honey moon lodge. lodge 1 and 2 are honeymoon lodges. The difference between these two lodges and the rest are they have a private balcony looking over the water and has an outdoor shower and indoor bath the other ones only have a indoor bath and shower together and no balcony or view of the water.

we arrives at 2pm and lunch was between 1.30pm to 2.30pm. Lunch was a buffet mixed of hot and cold. It was different everyday. Things like chicken and beef etc.

we where told to meet at the porch looking over the river at 3.30pm for high tea before our game drive where we met our ranger and tracker duane and Ibrahim. They are your ranger and tracker for your whole trip.

we where shown to the car and the car holds 9 people, we met everyone who was on our car. there was 6 of us 3 couples on the car. If you want the most comfortable seat would be the front row. if you want a bumpy ride where your stomach turns is the back and behind the driver side was good like a mini rollarcoaster.

As we where out the drive duane stopped and explained every animal in detail etc.
We seen the big 5 on our first drive. The drive was between 4pm-7pm. The drive was sunny and warm 31st October 2015 I took a jumper with me but never used it. half way through the drive you stop for 15 minutes for a drink and stretch your legs and some nibbles and even a Pee behind the bush!!! Theres vodka, whiskey, Gin, soft-drinks. Nibbles where cookies and marshmallows.

We got back to the lodge around 7.15 and had 45 mins to get ready for dinner. Personally everyone I seen wore what they had on at the game drive. at night regardless where you live in the lodge. no1 to no 15 a guard walks you to your lodge. as there is monkeys, impalas, and even the hippo was out the water. sometimes because the impalas are around the lodge this attracts the leopards.

the guard came and chapped our door at 8pm and took us to dinner.Dinner was in the lama, it was beautiful a small beach bbq style place with lanterns and a fire and you sit and have dinner with the group who was on the car even the ranger Duane came too. Water is free all the time alcohol was less than £1 a beer. Everything is on your room tab no money is handed over. You have your own butler or your whole stay. he serves you gets you drinks etc.

After dinner around 10-11pm we headed to bed for our 5pm wake up call the next day for our tea and coffee at 5.30 before our morning game drive. 1st November 2015 it was light and warm took a jumper but never used it. This time we stopped for stretch of the legs and muffins and tea and coffee and watch the sunrise. we seen the big 5 again. The game drive is from 6m to 9am and they provide you with water.

we Arrived back to the lodge around 9.15am and went straight for breakfast. Time for breakfast is 9am-10am. breakfast was a cold breakfast consisted of cold meat ham cereal etc and the hot breakfast was made on order which included sausage egg bacon etc. they also done a different special everyday e.g egg benedicts on a English muffin.

During the time between morning drive and night drive you can do a bush walk!! I highly recommend this. We met people saying they weren't allowed to do this because its too windy or the Black rhino is too close too the lodge. Just push too go out.

Duane took me and my wife and another couple out It was amazing. Your told to try wear black or white as its harder for animals too see you. we walked for 1 hour 30 minutes and came across a few animals the jecikle dog and yes the black rhino. The rhino spotted us and it hid in the bush across the dam. We then had to retreat and then the rhino came to look for us. we retreated back to the lodge. is was amazing so push for it.

The other days we chilled at the pool and in the lodge as it was so hot. the pool was cold.

Night drives where more successful than the morning drives. Getting close to animals was amazing. I felt the best animal I saw was the leopard because most animals where always stationary like the lion, elephants etc. The leopard was always on the move and the chase was brilliant sometimes he got away sometimes we got him. The animals get really close to the car. We bumped into a grumpy bull elephant on heat and he charged at the car it was scary but the tracker started shout and making noise and he retreated away from the car.

2nd night dinner was a set menu and made to order. soup, Fillet of steak or salmon or pasta, deserts like ice cream, or pastry and cream was all table service.

Myself and my wife bar bill came to £25 on check out for about 30 alcoholic drinks over 4 days. water is free in the reserve still or sparkling.

Only negatives I had about the lodge was they told you we should tip the following people, 250 rand per lodge per day for the range, 100 rand per day per lodge for the tracker, 100 rand per day per butler. its optional as after speaking to people from Australia where they don't tip in there country they said its there job and they get paid to do there job.

Even though tipping is optional it shouldn't be a note left in your room book.

we tipped and id recommend tipping the cleaner when you get there, She ran us a bath and left us champagne and rose petals and my wife loved it but I took the credit and said I left a note lol

Also, This lodge is in the Kruger area not part of Kruger national park. these animals are put in the private reserve. the reserve is so large and guaranteed to see the big 5 unlike Kruger national park where you could go and drive all day and not see any animals at all.

Only animal you wont see here is the cheetah its in the timbavati game reserve but sometimes it comes across to thronybush but maybe only once a month.

wifi 80 rand for your whole stay but only in by the pool or sitting area and very slow.

5 star reserve so any question please message me and ill be happy to answer any your questions.

a tip would be when fly back from hoedspruit the little guys carry your case from the pavement to the check in desk 10 yards yes 10 yards then they ask you for a tip and show you 100 rand which is £5. Have 10 rand in your pocket. I seen one passing money to the guy who carried our bag. Didn't like this at all but nothing to do with the reserve.

They advertised this lodge as a 5 star and the maximum can be rated is a 3 star.
Coming from Sabi Sabi lodge this place is so disappointed that we cut our stay and left one day earlier.
The hotel is nothing more than a simple wooden house with no interior designe decoration , very very basic and nothing interesting about the hotel.
Rooms are OK designed - as a three star - with basic elements to stay in the middle of nowhere, but remember you only stay outside for 6 hours and rest of the day you need a nice comfortable place to stay.
Nine of us could sleep as all the pillows are very high and hard.
Pool always dirty and look so unappealing, living rooms not inviting etc.

But the big disappointing part is the food .
So so limited, just three menu options for dinner and very very limited snacks for lunch.

When we arrived and went for lunch we only had salads and a few snacks - chicken nuggets- pizza and spring rolls.
They rushed us to finish lunch as we were told lunch is only from 1 to 2 !!
When complaining they told us is a snack lunch because breakfast is a ver strong one.
Next day breakfast was so normal and even I would say rather limited .

Game visit was good as we saw quite a few animals but again as this is a bush you need to drive and drive and look and look around until you can see a few animals .
Nothing comparable with the open savannah of Kenya and Tanzania .

Not recommendable at all.

My wife and I have been in the safari industry for over 20 years so are discerning guests. We spent 24 hours at Waterside Lodge for our 34th wedding anniversary.

The entire experience was relaxed and informal from the first greeting by Charity to Rich our butler and especially Lucky and Benson out guide and tracker.

Thornybush has a deserved reputation for its game viewing and even during February it delivered for us despite the very long grass and dense leaves prevalent at this time of the year. We saw many different groups of all the big 5 species except for leopard as well as general game and birds with a juvenile giant eagle owl a special sighting.

Lucky and Benson worked well as a team and ensured that we all had a great game experience with a relaxed and confident delivery style that comes with experience.

Overall the food was also of a high standard and the dinner on our veranda was a nice touch, given our anniversary. The overall experience was very good value for money.

I have stayed there for 3 nights in Feb/2013 and it was perhaps the best lodge I ever stayed, even compared to some other places we stayed around South Africa and luxury resorts elsewehere. The service is impeccable, with our designated butler available for whatever my friend and I wanted very promptly. Food was delicious and with a lot of variety. Breakfast, lunch and dinner, were served in different places to take advantage of all the vantage points. Rooms were clean, very well organized and decoration was a high point. Staff very polite and getting out of their way to make you feel relaxed, which you'll certainly will. Drinking wine gazing at the stars was awesome.

Game drives are another top mark of the lodge. Jamie and Abraham, our guide and tracker, were extremely efficient and knowledgeable. There was nothing they didn't know about the reserve or the animals. Their amazing skills led to spot a chameleon, at night, while driving at 30km/h!. So the result was the Big 5 in 4 game drives, including lion roaring at about 3 metres away, which was the highlight, for sure. Also, don't underestimate the other animals, they are all a lot of fun and very very interesting when the guide know their stuff. And this was certainly the case.

Definitely contact the lodge and let them know that it's your honeymoon - they will be able to organize some special things for you and your partner. The weather is still typically warm in April although you will need some warmer clothes for the evening and early morning.

How many people are in each jeep? We are both photographers and don't want to have to be in a middle seat.
Answer from Adamae
Vancouver, Washington62 contributions19 helpful votes
I think it will depend on the size of group you are traveling with. We had 14 which allowed us to generally be two to a seat in 2 rigs. Personally, after our recent experience of being 3 to a aseat most of our trip—until we complained loudly enough to gain another rig—I would verify that you would have the space you need . With photographers in our group of 16 on the rest of our trip, it was EXTREMELY annoying to not have space to handle equipment. Fortunately, we know a VP in our tour company, and our needs were met. But we would NOT put ourselves in that position again. So confirm!! You are wise to be exploring this issue now.

I very much doubt it. Once you are checked into the gate at Waterside, the drive seems like 15-20 minutes to the premises. You will be in the middle of the bush...surrounded by animals. You will be amazed by your surroundings.
Answer from Candice W

Hi there Cheryl, your rate should be all-inclusive which means all your meals and game drives are included. I'd definitely orgainze a transfer through Thornybush, they send a vehicle to the airport to fetch you, and take you back again when you leave. Then for the actual safari - there are 2 game drives every day, one in the morning and one in the late afternoon. You have a professional safari guide and tracker on each vehicle (open, safari-viewing vehicle), who point out different animals that you may come across, and offer insights into life in the bush. I hope this makes what you can expect a little clearer :)
