A visit to Waterbuck Lodge is highly recommended. The chalets are well appointed and spacious, and viewing birds and animals from the private deck is a boon, as well as the outdoor shower! My trip in mid-September allowed for excellent sighting of animals as the vegetation is still open. The staff are highly efficient and extremely conscious of the COVID-19 protocols. The early morning game drives are the best part of the day, and Gino and Vusi made sure we saw everything that was walking, flying or creeping. It was a privilege to have our stay catered for in every way possible, and thanks to a wonderful staff for the care and attention in these difficult times.

Located in southern Thornybush, Waterbuck has superb game viewing which, together with their superb staff, makes it a unique experience for all guests whether they are new to the bush or frequent visitors. Gino did an excellent job as our ranger mixing his good knowledge of animals and birds with good humour, while the staff were uniformly friendly, helpful and professional. With only eight beds, the lodge gives a wonderful feeling of being a "home away from home" rather than the less personal environments offered by larger lodges.

This was our first safari, and truly one of the best travel experiences of our lives! We miss the lodge so much already.

We stayed for 3 nights at the end of November/beginning of December.
To start, communication was superb which stood out when picking from many accommodations that were rated highly. They made the entire process very smooth and welcoming. We arranged our airport transfers through them from 2 different airports (hoedspruit and nelspruit), and we were able to pay online prior to our arrival.

They were able to accommodate our dietary restrictions (we requested Halaal meat) and made amazing meals out of it. For 2 of the nights the meal was held in the boma with a beautiful table set up and delicious 3 course meal. Our last night was rainy, and we all ate together at the dining table at the lodge. It was very cozy and a wonderful experience.
They serve coffee/tea and biscuits before the game drive. Then we’d stop for another coffee/hot drink break while on the drive. A full breakfast including your choice of eggs is served after arriving back to the lodge. We would usually nap during the day, and lunch would be served around 3:30. The afternoon game drive would begin shortly after that and then dinner would be served a short time after arriving back from the drive. We were very well fed and did not go hungry.

The room was beautiful. The AC worked perfectly in the bed area which is where we needed it. Housekeeping would come twice a day while we were on our game drives. There were plenty of plugs, including one on each side of the bed.

The game drives were superb. We were able to do 5 game drives and saw elephants, lions, giraffes, Cape buffalo, white rhinos, monkeys, warthogs, wild painted dogs, hippos, a crocodile, zebras, impalas, and even 2 sightings of leopards! Plenty of birds and smaller species as well. Theres a watering hole at the lodge and we had many interesting visitors including a herd of elephants there as well.

We are beyond happy with our decision to choose Waterbuck as our first safari experience. The small lodge lends to wonderful conversation with fellow guests from all over the world, with plenty of privacy and space to spread out as well. Safaris are not a cheap experience, and Waterbuck delivered beyond expectations.

Overall, cannot say enough good things about the lodge. Already dreaming of coming back! Thank you to the wonderful staff who made the place as magical as it was

Stayed for 3 nights in March just before the lockdown, We were the only guests everyone else had cancelled. We had the room overlooking the waterhole. It was spacious, comfortable & private. It had an outdoor shower which was great & a lovely deck to sit outside & watch the elephants come to play. The food was super. Gino & Sully were our safari guides for early morning & evening. They were so enthusiastic & knowledgeable and we saw the big 5 on several occasions. Anita was very helpful making calls for us etc to our travel agent as we tried to change our flights home. Thank you to all the staff for a fantastic holiday and hope life will be back to normal soon.

A corporate incentive trip started with luxury on arrival. We were welcomed with warm hand towels, drinks and luggage and valet service. The finishes and style of the lodge are exquisite. Within the first two game drives we had already experienced the big 5; what a special treat. The bedrooms were gorgeous, boasting a large bath, indoor and outdoor shower as well as a full turn down service. The most impressive of all, being the friendly staff and their impeccable service. The chef, Antoinette, showed amazing culinary skills which delighted us at every meal. The game tracker, Solly, entertained us on every drive! Last but not least, our host and game ranger, Matt, not only provided us with an abundance of knowledge but ensured that every guest had an unforgettable experience. We cannot wait to return!

Between Gino and Solly, who brought the bush alive on both drives and walks and Anita and her team who pampered us in the lodge, we had an amazing bush experience. After our drives or walk, when we saw all the big 5 and other less seen bush animals, we were always happy to return to the Lodge which felt like home from home, and where we knew wonderful meals awaited us and warm hospitality from all the staff. We look forward to our next visit.

Undoubtedly the stars of this stylish lodge were the animals. Our ranger Keegan and his hawk eyed tracker Solly, were brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Sunrise coffee surrounded by birdsong , sundowners -skies on fire against the backdrop of the Drakensberg mountains. Our viewings were extraorduinary.
Keegan and Solly showed their ability to work as a team and think on their feet. It made all our experiences special even being caught in the drama of an African rainstorm that comes out of nowhere.
Adelia and her team made us feel at home at the lodge- We were welcomed with
smiles , hot towels, cool drinks. The routine is built around you, so time melts away, at the pool , in your rooms, around the table. The meals were fantastic and the wines world class.
This is a haven in which to reset your clock end experience the magnificence of nature in luxury.
Glorious.
Well worth visiting on Waterbuck is the Canine anti poaching unit, where Darryl and Gino do an incredible job, with their dogs to fight the on going plundering of our national treasure.

Wow possibly four of the best days of my life. It's hard to know where to start about how great my experience was. I was greeted at the lodge by my guide Matthew who is incredibly passionate about his job. We enjoyed a 3 hour safari drive each day in the morning and afternoon. Matthew and our spotter Sully would accompany us. Sully is incredible at spotting animals and all of drives were truly unforgettable experiences. Being up close with these wonderful animals is breathtaking. Now on to the accommodation. The lodge I stayed at was very cosy. It's nice just sitting by the pool or out the back of my room. I saw so much wildlife the highlight being 4 Elephants walking by. Waterbuck Lodge will also make sure that you are well fed which is good for me as I love my food. Two breakfasts in the morning, lunch and a lovely three course meal in the evening. Thank you again to all the Waterbuck lodge staff I will definitely be back again in the future at some point ❤️

Waterbuck lodge offers an intimate, “home from home” base to explore the beautiful Thornybush Reserve set in the Kruger Park, with a magnificent backdrop of the Drakensberg mountains. The staff are beyond incredible as you soon become a part of the Waterbuck lodge family. Roux and Aubrey looked after our game viewing activities and offered an exceptional bush experience, while Antoinette and her team kept the culinary delights flowing. We will definitely return!

Is the waterhole visible from all rooms or just room #4? Is it visible from lobby?
Answer from Bryan S

There is a room which has a balcony directly onto the river. 'The lobby' ir bar area leads out onto a viewing deck. We saw a croc swimming directly below us. Our room had a balcony looking over the river, albeit drier at the time, we did see buck walking and grazing and loads of birds.

Hi Janine, I always inform in advance about food requests, just write, they were very helpful with us. I remember that the wifi was good and I also believed that we had tv in our room (which was very big, 2 floors): I cannot be sure since we didn't use it. Regarding food..we spent just one day, no time to judge it repetitive :)
