Xanatseni, or "Place of The Mopane", is nestled in the heart of the bushveld, within the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve which forms part of the Greater Kruger. The camp, surrounded by the African bush, is like an oasis with a large green lawn, big trees, with the main lodge and rooms built in a half-moon shape around it. Xanatseni is not one of those large lodges where you can sometimes get lost in the masses. It is small and intimate, where you don't only get to know nature but also the staff who are friendly and welcoming. The rooms are free-standing from the main lodge and each other, so you get a nice level of privacy, too. The main lodge building has beautiful communal areas including a lounge, bar and a pool, but what I really liked was their additional outside lounge area at the front of the lodge on the lawns, and their private bird hide that overlooks a waterhole right next to the camp. Our room (Buffalo) was spacious with a nice big bathroom which included a private outside shower that looked straight into the bush. Not all of the suites have an outside shower though, so if you would like one be sure to ask when booking. If you are a larger group or would just love a bit more privacy you can book the Tseni Suite (2 bedroom suite) which also has it's own pool and firepit areas.  From breakfast through to lunch and dinner we enjoyed all the food, but what was truly special for me was the outside boma where we got to relax and have dinner. The game drives were also very special with our ranger Ross and tracker Sidney making the experience extra enjoyable. Ross was full of jokes which was fun, but he's also very knowledgeable about the animals and the bush. Xanatseni is one of those places where you just want to forget the world around you. It allows you to enjoy an intimate safari experience with friends and family, connect with each other and yourself, as you lose yourself in the African bush. The day we had to leave was very sad, however I was happy to know that I can share the love I have for this place and tell others about this great place they need to visit. Myself and my wife, Monika, want to thank all the staff that made our stay so memorable, especially to Ross, Sidney and Teneil - we truly felt like family when we left.

We stayed here in September 2022, we stayed in the Tseni suite which had its own kitchen, lounge, fire pit, plunge pool and Safari vehicle. The accommodation was beautiful and we very often saw elephants, rhinos, wildebeest and other animals walk by in the day. The food was ok, the choice was very limited often only a meat or no meat option. Game drives were brilliant we saw the big 5 by the end of our first full day plus the stars were amazing too and even saw the Milky Way! The staff were lovely, a big thank you precious and faith for keeping clean and tidy and to Sydney and his wife for the lovely cakes on our game drives! Overall everything was lovely however, I would definitely recommend checking your bill before checking out as I ended up paying for drinks and bottles of wine of other guests who had since left.

A game park safari is on the bucket list of so many, as it was ours. This was our first visit to South Africa and it certainly wont be our last (we hope). We placed our trust in our travel agent who booked the Xanatseni Private Camp for us for a 4 night stay and he chose a winner as far as we are concerned.
We were met at the little Hoedspruit airport by a staff member and taken to the lodge (extra cost but reasonable). Although not top of the price range we found the lodge and our villa to be absolutely delightful. All facilities mentioned on the website were great and since the lodge is small and intimate we felt very much at home right from the start. Our villa was so beautifully presented, spotlessly clean and, in a modest way, quite luxurious. Very comfortable, modern and bright with an outdoor patio overlooking the grounds and plain. The shower was wonderful, hot and strong and a bath was there for those who want to soak and relax.
All this was very much appreciated however the highlight was our Safari, guide and tracker. ALL the staff were wonderful but, of course, we spent more time with Dean and Sydney than the others therefore getting to know and appreciate their passion for their work. Whether or not we had spotted animals, the drives themselves would have been spectacular in their own right. The ‘boys’ prepared morning coffees and afternoon drinks during the drives and we saw the most stunning sunrise and sunsets and we FELT Africa. Amazing. But we did see animals and plenty of them. Sydney and Dean found the Big Five within our first 36 hours. Some of that was luck but much of it was incredible knowledge. They not only found a plethora of animals but Dean’s knowledge was endless and he explained about the flora and fauna in detail with an enthusiastic passion. An incredible man, an incredible country all enjoyed from a wonderful lodge. Highly, highly recommended.

We were really looking forward to end our stay in South Africa in Xanatseni private camp. The rooms are very nice, with a nice outdoor patio. Also the general places were nice. The room also has a large bathroom. But what I don't understand is why all the limescale in the shower, showerhead and sink is not properly cleaned. This really didn't look very appealing to me.
And then the meals we were offered. The quality was not good. For example chips were almost cold, and besides that greasy and not cooked. For the price you have to pay per night, I was really expecting better food and quality. This was just mediocre unfortunately.
The staff though was very friendly, the guide was good, as also the gamedrives. But overall, it didn't reach my expectations.

This was meant as a last stop before heading home, to be closer to the airport, so we only booked 2 nights. Plans changed since booking 2 years ago and I now wish those plans had included staying here longer.

I imagined that the lodge would be signposted from the main Klaserie/Timbavati tar road so didn’t check the instructions that Zanel had sent us so we did miss the turning. However, Ross was waiting for us when we came back on ourselves so saved the day. The track to the lodge was a bit hairy after some rain, I wouldn’t have liked to attempt some of the puddles in a compact car.

We stayed in Buffalo room, one of the 3 stand-alone chalets, overlooking the lawns and trees to the front of the lodge. It was a big room, with a comfortable bed, lovely bathroom/dressing room and outside shower (inside too). No tea/coffee making facilities in the room but these were always available in the main building.
Teneil made us very welcome and even laid on a surprise in our room for the missed anniversary that we should have celebrated had Covid not hit and disrupted our original dates. All staff went out of their way to make our stay comfortable and everyone was so friendly, you really felt like the lodge was your home and you were part of the family. Food was varied and plenty of it. They operated an honesty bar which worked well.

Ross and Sydney took us on some great game drives, shame about the weather at times, we got soaked but had fun.

Xanatseni is definitely on our list of places we will return to on our next visit.

seeing as this was my first safari experience i was very happy to have chosen xanatseni.it was everything we needed to start our adventure.from the minute ash picked us up in a taxi i knew we was in for a treat.the room itself was easily large enough and decorated in a tasteful style and the bath was so big !!!! the shower was prob the vest i've ever had and everything worked just fine and housekeeping done a great job.the seats outside were great to sit and watch the world go by or even a short walk to the tower to lookout for game was enjoyment in itself.
the service for food and drink was first class and everything was cooked to perfection so well done to the cooks and waitresses.it was great to sit and eat with the staff at meal times and was very informal and great fun round the bbq.
we had ross and sydney for the game drives and what a pair they are !!! always had light hearted jokes to get us through the drives but they went above and beyond their roles, sydneys tracking is an asset to the camp and ross driving to catch a leopard up a tree was also an experience but great fun ( well for the males in the group ) we saw lots off game ,only a cheetah eluding us,and also wild dogs ( a bonus ).
a special mention to teniel the camp host, she went out her way to see everybody was happy and she is also a credit to the camp, she also done some sewing for me and sat with my partner one morning when she missed a drive.so thank you teniel x
all in all i was more than happy with everything, excellent value for money and irreplaceable staff make this camp a must.paul and kim x

Everything about this place is amazing. The ranger and traveler we had, Dean and Sidney, were first class. Knew a lot. And helped us to see the big 5. The front of house staff and housekeeping also made sure everything was perfect. And the location was also perfect. So peaceful but close to all the action. Couldn’t fault a thing. Thoroughly recommend this place as somewhere to stay, what an experience.

Can you give a rating 6 stars??
From the moment we arrived we were made to feel like part of the family. The warmth and sincerity that was shown when we arrived set the scene for our whole stay. Our tracker Sydney and our ranger Paul were as excited as we were when we came across one of the Big 5, Sydney even gave us his little jig from his tracker seat on the front of the vehicle. We had several encounters with elephants some were very up close and personal. Ross came as tracker on our final two drives and with his eagle eye spotted the elusive leopard lying in a tree only 75 meters from the track. That gave us all the big 5.
Teneil and all of the staff , meals and accommodations were also 1st class. It was so very hard to leave, so we’ll have to say ‘til next time’

Very good. Food is first class, dessert at both lunch and dinner! excellent game drives led by Dean and Sydney, they were very motivated to find the animals in our drives. During the game drives, we would always be able to see something new.
Service is excellent and it’s very cosy. Teneuil was very hospitable, and the rest of the kitchen and service staff are very friendly and accommodating. The beds are very comfortable and there’s a nice bathroom/ bath tub. Very family-friendly environment, cosy and nice. We would go back again if we had a chance.

We were 2 couples that stayed in January in the Tseni suite.

From the moment we arrived we felt so welcome, the staff were amazing, Tenel went out her way to make sure we had the best time. Our ranger Mel went out her way to find lots of different animals and make the drives so exciting.

We loved this experience so much that we have decided we need to go back! It's very rare for us to return to anywhere as there is so much of the world to explore, but for here I'd make an exception.

My only regret, that I didn't stay longer!

Big thanks to everyone at the resort who made it so special.

Hello, the car fits 10 people, 3 rows with 3 and one person in the front with the ranger. The car is not always full since guests come and go (and the lodge is not always fully booked) but there is normally someone in the middle seat. I would not say the middle seat is too bad though, it is actually less bumpy than the sides and less windy too. Some ppl like the middle. For pictures, however, I would recommend sitting in the front with the ranger. I stayed for 2 nights and spotted many lions, I even saw a few of them eating a giraffe, which was awesome! I unfortunaly did not get to see a leopard or cheetah. But I kept in touch with another guest and they saw a leopard the day after I left! It is hard to predict what you will see. This was my first safari experience and we had an awesome time at the Xanatseni.

We took an SAA Airlink flight from JNB to Hoedspruit (less than an hour) where we were met by a driver who brought us to the lodge, which was an easy 25 minutes or so. There was a family there we befriended who rented an SUV and did the drive with no trouble, although I would personally recommend the flight. One way or another, you're in for an unforgettable experience... the people at Xanatseni are terrific.

Take a nice, warm fleece for morning and evening game drives. Sometimes you go all the way to the south of the park and it can get chilly in the open top jeep. Daps/closed toe shoes for outside evening dining (my son almost stepped on a Scorpion). Camera with a really good zoom lens, mind you the rangers get you so close to the animals, it’s unbelievable. Swimming costumes.. pool area is gorgeous! You will LOVE Xanatseni! It’s such an amazing place and the staff are unbelievable. We will most definitely go back! Ps. Beware of the monkeys, they are so naughty. Keep your windows closed when you’re not in the room. They broke through the mosquito blind in our room and stole our crisps lol. Have an amazing time!!! Say hi to the staff for us.

Hi ...we were meant to fly direct from Cape Town to hoedspruit but hoedspruit airport was closed that day so we ended up landing at joburg. We then had to get a taxi up to xanatseni .... It took 9 hours and is an awful journey once you get out of joburg! Do not attempt it!! Highly highly recommend flying into hoedspruit airport and then sorting a transfer through xanatseni to the lodge and back. We flew back from hoedspruit to joburg and transfer is only 30 mins and saw wildlife all the way!
