If you want the BEST Safari in the area then this is the Only choice! Incredible staff! Food was incredible! Never disappointed. The guides-Hector, Richard, Christian, Carny were the best for example when we saw 8 lions laying around we stopped for over 20 minutes. Another Safari drove up, their guide never educated them with one word, the tourists took pictures for two minutes and they left. Christian educated with his wealth of knowledge and said it’s pretty common with the other safaris in the area how they operate. Our room and the lodge were always well kept, the grounds were incredible, and if it wasn’t for the country shutting their electricity off everyday our room was comfortable to say the least. Can’t wait to go back! If anyone didn’t experience the same then they obviously were ones that are from the entitlement crowd and if you are then go to Beverly Hills and hang out on Rodeo Drive

Property's Favourite Review
After a three-year delay in travels, my sister, friend and I finally made it to South Africa and our stay at Ezulwini’s River Lodge and Billy’s Lodge. And wow was it worth the wait. Pre-trip, Frances was always very responsive to my questions and made the planning part of the trip seamless. We flew from Cape Town to Hoedspruit and were met at the airport by our driver for the trip to the River Lodge. Even on this first part of the trip we were lucky enough to see elephants and giraffes. At River Lodge, we were spoiled by Ange and Glory, and at Billy’s Lodge by Knox and Sue, along with the rest of staff who may be behind the scenes but all did their part to make our stay wonderful. Everyone’s attention to detail is phenomenal, but what really made it memorable was how genuinely kind and personable everyone is. The lodges themselves are really lovely, with comfortable main outdoor seating areas and aerial walkways that let you get an above ground view. Meals are served open-air, letting you enjoy the outdoors. Our rooms (Ntoma at River and Molope at Billy’s) were perfect for the three of us. They both have a plunge pool and deck where you can sit outside and enjoy the sounds of the Bush. The safari drives are breathtaking and exceptional. Craig, Shad, Hector and Rich at River, and Christian and Conrad at Billy’s are masters at what they do - sharing information that really takes you beyond just seeing the “Big Five,” to really experience the beauty and importance of all the animals and the area. The coffee stops and sundowners gave us a chance to stretch our legs, and enjoy a little nip of Amarula in our coffee, or a Six Dogs Blue gin and tonic. The meals are wonderful. They are also very accommodating to anyone with dietary restrictions. We enjoyed wine tastings at both lodges - thanks Ange and Lauren for sharing your expertise and stories about the early days of Ezulwini. Sue also does a wonderful outdoor massage. We were also fortunate to have a wonderful group of people staying at the lodges, and all got along so well, which really just added to the fun. I honestly didn’t know what to expect from the trip or from the lodges since it was my first safari, but I have to say that Ezulwini has set the bar very high. If I was taking safari newbies somewhere, I couldn’t think of a better spot than River and Billy’s lodges - as I know everyone would have the same stellar experience as we did. I can’t wait until the next time.

Dear Kashou106, thank you so much for taking the time to write this wonderful review about your stay at Ezulwini RIver and Billy's Lodges, we really appreciate it. It was an absolute pleasure to host you, your sister and friend at our lodges and your lovely description of your overall experience and feelings about your stay mean a great deal to us. We have passed on your lovely comments to the teams at both lodges, They will be absolutely thrilled to know that they made your stay so special. As you have stated, we do our very best to cater for guests with special dietary requirements and our management team and chefs will ensure that menus are 'tweaked' so that those guests don't feel left out or provided with inferior meals just because they can't eat or drink specific things. It is a vital part of the overall amazing Ezulwini Lodges experience that we are particularly proud of. That together with the wine tasting and the relaxing massages, makes it just perfect. Thank you also for sharing that your experience was enhanced by the other guests staying at the same time, whilst we of course cannot take credit for them being so nice, it is great to know that they helped with you having such a lovely time. Many of our guests have not been on a safari before and always go away with the same feelings, but others who have been, also say this, but thank you again for advising that we have set the bar high, that is appreciated. You arrived at Ezulwini Lodges as 'strangers' but went away as a friend so please do keep in touch, you will always be welcomed back to the Ezulwini Family should you wish to return at some point in the future. Take care,

I visited Ezulwini with my now fiancee back in mid September and till this day it still feels surreal. The hospitality that we received as soon as we arrived at River Lodge was beyond welcoming and this carried forward through our lovely stay at Billy's Lodge. This trip was beyond memorable, not only because we got engaged here, but because getting to experience this beautiful part of the world is an incomparable experience. Nothing beats getting to see the BIG 5 in their natural habitat and then some...Both lodges were one of a kind and the food was impeccable! We will be back with more friends and family without a doubt! Thank you to all of the wonderful staff!

I recently stayed at both the River lodge and Billys lodge with my husband and brother and sister in law. We traveled from the US for an amazing adventure. The food was incredible (we had gluten free and dairy free needs that were accommodated without much ado, deliciously)! All was fine dining quality, and prepared with love and care. The hospitality at both lodges was unparalleled. We felt like we were welcomed into a family for our entire stay. Special thanks to Franz, Richard and Conrad for the amazing game drives. They were knowledgeable and created a special experience for us. We were there for six nights and did 11 game drives - we saw leopards, elephants, lions, a plethora of giraffe including a newborn giraffe, baby lion cubs, hyena, hippos, crocodiles, bamboos, vernit (?) monkeys, zebra, white rhino, a plethora of birds, so many impala and daily sunsets in the bush. We also observed a "kill" where lions had taken down a giraffe. We felt lucky that this area has a cap on the number of lodges in the area, so we generally didn't see many other groups driving around unless there was a major sighting, like leopards. We visited in October, which I would highly recommend - the weather was nice, not too hot, rainy a few days, green but not over grown and a fresh feeling of spring. We did not experience any load shedding while we were there, but I know it can be an issue. When at the lodges, you are very much "in the bush" and kept to the grounds of the lodge. They have some workout equipment, but don't expect you would be going on any walks - it would be risky to do so. It is important to heed the recommendations of the lodge, and realize the animals are free, so the people are in cages for their safety. This being said, I felt very safe the whole time I was there, but worth knowing this in advance. We chose not to bring our 6 and 9 year old kids along because the days were early get-ups and late nights with 6-8hrs in the open air jeep or land rover each day to see animals. There wasn't a lot of room for kids to run free. That being known, it would still work to bring kids along with some coordination with the lodge. Either lodge would be fantastic to stay at with a large group - like a family reunion or something like it. We hope to make something like that happen in the future when our children are older. Special thank you to Ang, Craig and Glory from the River lodge and Knox from Billy's lodge - We felt so welcome and cared for!

Dear CarynC47, thank you for taking the time to write a review and let us know how much you enjoyed your stay at River and Billy's Lodges, we really appreciate it. We are so glad that you were able to have the whole bush experience, your descriptions of your activities are wonderful, and what amazing sightings you had while you were at our lodges. The Baboons and Vervet monkeys are quite 'cheeky' and are always on the lookout for a free meal, but quite entertaining. It is always very important to us to ensure that guests with special dietary needs or requirements can be catered for, which is why we always ask in advance of a stay, so that you won't be disappointed with what we can offer menu wise. Our chefs take great pride in how they prepare meals, and we are so glad that enjoyed yours too. We do have a policy to welcome children aged ten and over, but can accommodate younger ones, but the plan has to be agreed on a special basis, and as you say, because the animals on the reserve roam freely, we have to ensure everyone's safety first. It would be lovely if you wanted to bring your children to visit, what a wonderful way to share happy memories with them. Thank you so much for your very kind words about the staff at each lodge, they will be delighted to know that they made your stay so enjoyable. Please do keep in touch, you arrived as guests/strangers, but have left as friends, and you will be welcomed back to the Ezulwini Family should you wish to return at some point in the future. I had high expectations for this trip and Ezulwini over exceeded in every way! I could not have been more thrilled with the attentiveness of the staff (Ang was on her "A" game at the River Lodge)! The drivers and trackers for the safaris were excellent! Hector and Richard really knew the ins and outs of scouting out everything we wanted to see on that particular drive and making it fun! The coffee/tea/cookie breaks at the sunrise safaris as well as the cocktails at the evening safaris were the perfect break! I highly recommend the six dogs gin with the rose tonic! SO yummy! The food was excellent at every meal and I am a very picky person! I'm sure that it's no surprise the chicken pot pie was the favorite at lunch and the steaks at dinner! The bar-b-q evening was so special with the staff entertainment! I loved every minute of their passion put into making it a memorable event for us. The accommodations were clean and well taken care of! I was celebrating my birthday during the trip and the staff really made me feel special with little surprises! The suites were beautiful, the grounds were gorgeous, the safaris were exciting, the wine tastings were fun and we lucked out with a great group of people who were on their vacations at the same time. We all bonded and made new friends! I cannot recommend this place enough...in fact I have recommended it to all of my friends and I have several people who are seriously looking into going to Ezulwini in the future! I hope we can bring our daughters back one day! THANK YOU THANK YOU EZULWINI!

A Trip of a Lifetime I have wanted to experience an African safari since I was a child. At age 67, my wishes came true. Four months ago, my sons and I joined one another from different parts of the world for a magical trip to South Africa, spending one week in beautiful Capetown and the other week on safari at the Ezulwini Lodges, located in the Balule Nature Reserve, sharing an unfenced border with Kruger National Park. We were fortunate to have stayed at both Ezulwini Lodges: Billy’s Lodge and the River Lodge; each architectural wonders, blending their beautiful and comfortable designs into the natural land that surrounds them. The lodges are family owned and run and all the staff are a part of this ‘family,’ making the whole experience very much a personal one, offering a sense of professional yet comfortable belonging. Ezulwini’s River Lodge sits right on the Olifants River, while Billy's Lodge is situated in the middle of the African Bush. Both lodges boast an amazing sky deck bridge - ‘a walkway on stilts’ - perched about 100’ above the ground and which offers a safe and meandering walk from the lobby area over to relaxing, covered observation deck lounges, complete with comfortable chairs/tables. At the River Lodge, the sky deck ends at the Olifants River, offering a beautiful deck surrounded by shady trees, alive with birdsong, from which to watch and listen to the mighty river’s flow, while simultaneously noticing a crocodile swimming in the river or basking on the river’s bank. At Billy’s Lodge, the deck lounge at the end of the sky deck walkway, sits perched above a watering hole. Within minutes of our arrival there, we were greeted by two magnificent elephants who came to delightfully entertain us just 20’ from us, as they drank and bathed themselves. They took our breath away! In the mornings/evenings, I found the deck lounge an awesome perch from which to watch the sunrise or sunset. While each Lodge is different in design and outlay, their rooms are equally comfortable, spacious and immaculate. Each room boasts a beautiful, four-poster, white-linened bed, surrounded by a white netting curtain from top to bottom. I felt like a princess each time I got into bed! The covered, open air lobbies, outdoor decks and dining areas of each Lodge, blend spectacularly into their natural surrounds and in the evening they are beautifully and warmly lit. It was simply a delight each evening, after a spectacular day of game watching, to return home from our drive and see the intimate glow of the Lodge beckoning from a distance. The happy staff greeted us with warm smiles, a hot, moist towel and a cocktail before we each returned to our rooms to clean up and return to share another sumptuous dinner together. The food, wine and service were first class. The bar areas in both Lodges are lovely spaces - inviting and comfortable in which to gather and are well-stocked with cocktails and wine. On the penultimate night of our stay, our evening meal was a delicious outdoor campfire barbecue and the staff surprised our group with a most amazing native dance and song ritual, which brought tears of joy to my eyes. Both lodges offer twice-daily 2-1/2 to 3-hour game drives; one at dawn and one before sunset. Ezulwini’s lodges boast comfortable Land Rover Pumas on which to travel - amazing vehicles. The informed drivers share their broad and passionate knowledge with us as they ‘hunt’ for fresh animal tracks to follow. It’s such an adventure! And each sighting is gobsmacking, other-worldly and for me, deeply moving. The cool, crisp morning drive offers a stop in the Bush to stretch one’s legs and enjoy coffee or hot chocolate and a light snack, served at the back on the Land Rover ‘bar’. On the evening drives, the driver stops to offer a ‘sundowner’ cocktail and snacks, right in the middle of the Bush, as the sun is setting. The Rover’s engine is turned off, and all you can hear are the pulsing sounds of the Bush and our groups’ conversation. On one of our sundowner’s we were parked on the ‘airfield’ sipping our cocktails, when we saw a huge pack of impala skipping across the field a few hundred feet away. These refreshment stops in the middle of the African Bush were breath-taking to me: to be sipping coffee as the sun rises, or a cocktail as the sun sets, surrounded by the vast, wide open Bush, even as my feet were touching the hallowed ground of this ancient and beautiful country, was a soulful experience. My entire being was totally present to the visceral sounds and sightings of the day and my heart full of gratitude that there was yet another tomorrow to anticipate more adventure and more animals. Thank you to ALL, at River’s Lodge and Billy’s Lodge, to Craig, Angie, Sue, Glory, Conrad and Hector for a trip that is etched in our hearts forever. We appreciated your delicious food, our comfortable, clean rooms, your beautiful smiles, and all the teachings you offered about the animals that live amongst you. Thank you, Laurence and Tess for creating this place of paradise, and to you, Lauren, Giles, and Bella for keeping the beautiful experience of Ezulwini going. I loved meeting all of you and I/we shall return!

Ezulwini was everything I’d hoped my first safari would be and so much more. From planning the trip to the daily rides and the amazing staff at both the River and Billy lodges, it was magical. The sunrise and sunset rides treated us to some of the beautiful skies I’ve ever seen. The drivers and trackers worked so hard to ensure we saw as a many animals as possible and taught us even more about animal behavior and the flora and fauna of the bush. Going off-road and following rhinos and other animals was so wonderful to watch them where they lived. Ange and Craig at the River Lodge and Knox and Sue at Billy’s lodge made us feel so welcomed and cared for. The chalets were so comfortable and the food was exceptional - you will never go hunger. So many best things about Ezulwini that it’s hard to say what was the best - although having hot water bottles and blankets for the morning rides and being greeted by warm wash clothes and a evening shot after the sunset ride made it feel special. Also Ange’s history of Africa talk and her wines was also a highlight. And I will making the Springbok shot for friends for years to come.

Ezulwini creates family, shares beauty and encourages tranquillity. Made up of two distinct lodges, we began our stay of 4 days at River Lodge. Glory attended to our every need with joy and grace. Jeannette prepared delectable meals with memorable soups, blue cheese tarts and chicken curry with papadom! Hector and Richard conducted our safari drives insuring our sightings up close and personal with the broad array of animals in the Balule Reserve. At Billy's Lodge, where we didn't 3 nights, Knox met us with his broad smile and nothing was too much trouble for him. Frans and Conrad drove and tracked us through the Bush enabling us to know the magic of Krueger. Encountering elephants, rhino, lions, leopards. giraffe and Cape Buffalo is thrilling as is just knowing their presence without sighting. The vast expanse of the land helps one breathe deeper and helps one understand one's place in the world. Accommodations and meals are superb in both lodges. Lauren shares her knowledge of her homeland with enthusiasm and wonder. She extends a welcome of family to all. If one wants to see Africa with one's eyes and heart, be sure to visit Ezulwini and you will be rewarded with a touch of heaven on earth.
