#2 of 8 Speciality lodging in Manyeleti Game Reserve
Travellers' Choice
Pungwe is a small intimate authentic safari camp which brings back the essence of a true safari experience. Our comfortable en-suite meru-style tents are reminiscent of days when safaris were all about the sights, sounds and smells of the bush. Our camp is about the bush, the animals, the unique experiences and the subsequent regaling of these by the iconic fireside. Pungwe Safari Camp is situated in the southern part of the 22 000 hectare Big 5 Manyeleti Reserve. Pungwe shares unfenced boundaries with two world renowned reserves, the Sabi Sand Reserve to the south and the Kruger National Park to the east, allowing for free movement of wildlife between the three reserves. This ensures that Pungwe's guests will be privy to some spectacular game viewing without having to share the sightings with numerous other visitors. Our guided morning walking safaris put you in touch with the bush, immerses you in your surroundings and enable you to encounter wildlife at a unique level. Our afternoon/evening game drives ensure that your sightings are up-close and personal. The perfect combination to create lasting memories. The 4 en-suite meru-styled tents at Pungwe offer simple elegant comfort, security, hot and cold running water for baths or showers and an exceptional feeling of truly being in the African bush. Only under canvas will you not only hear, but feel the roar of the lion, the throaty cough of a leopard and the Fiery Necked Nightjar celebrating the night.

Very basic facilities with NO electricity were the main attraction for me. Guests were cared for by 6 wonderful, dedicated and knowledgeable staff. Basic home cooking. The camp, which has been in operation for a considerable length of time - in my opinion could do with a general spruce up in some areas

This is a great place to get back to basics and experience the African bush without the distractions of modern life, allows you to get really immersed in the environment. We even had elephants wandering through the camp in the afternoon and another one took down a tree next to my tent overnight! No electricity and a breakfast cooked over an open wood fire - magical ! (Google search for" Pungwe Kettle" and you'll learn about "probably one of the most photographed kettles in the world") The opportunity to go off with a couple of guides (with gun!) into the bush on foot is a great experience and I would highly recommend it for anyone who is looking for a something a little different to other lodges with their game drives. Whilst on foot we got pretty close to a rhino but it

Our stay at pungwe was a wonderful experience. We saw all the the big five and lots of other animals and birds. Our morning walks were very instructive thanks to our two guides Isaac and Never. Kitchen staff was also very friendly. The thatched tents were very well equipped and the shower was nice and hot. But pungwe wouldn't be the same without the host mr Schultz ! He was there at all times entertaining his guest and making sure that everything went all right.

Nice place with good knowledgable and friendly personell. We were Lucky to see the big five during our visit (3 nights). The combination of an afternoon game drive and a morning game walk is surprising.

We were looking for the real bush experience. Open fire breakfast eggs and no electricity did not bother us. Being told we could not have cereal until the owner ate his fruit, being threatened with a fine for using the help's trail to the tent, not being picked up for a late-night game drive when all other guests went (was it because we had already tipped the guides) was unacceptable. We were asked to pay our lodging two days before we checked out. Go to a hostel if you want budget or do your own drive in Kruger. The staff was uncommunicative. We felt we were there for the owner's entertainment.
