#2 of 8 Speciality lodging in Manyeleti Game Reserve
Travellers' Choice
Pungwe is a small intimate authentic safari camp which brings back the essence of a true safari experience. Our comfortable en-suite meru-style tents are reminiscent of days when safaris were all about the sights, sounds and smells of the bush. Our camp is about the bush, the animals, the unique experiences and the subsequent regaling of these by the iconic fireside. Pungwe Safari Camp is situated in the southern part of the 22 000 hectare Big 5 Manyeleti Reserve. Pungwe shares unfenced boundaries with two world renowned reserves, the Sabi Sand Reserve to the south and the Kruger National Park to the east, allowing for free movement of wildlife between the three reserves. This ensures that Pungwe's guests will be privy to some spectacular game viewing without having to share the sightings with numerous other visitors. Our guided morning walking safaris put you in touch with the bush, immerses you in your surroundings and enable you to encounter wildlife at a unique level. Our afternoon/evening game drives ensure that your sightings are up-close and personal. The perfect combination to create lasting memories. The 4 en-suite meru-styled tents at Pungwe offer simple elegant comfort, security, hot and cold running water for baths or showers and an exceptional feeling of truly being in the African bush. Only under canvas will you not only hear, but feel the roar of the lion, the throaty cough of a leopard and the Fiery Necked Nightjar celebrating the night.

Once the realisation that there was no electricity had sunk in, thus became an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Marcel was a convivial host with the staff in general helpful and friendly. But the coup de grace were the game drives. I have been fortunate to have had many safari game drives in east and southern Africa, but these were the best given that we were able to get very close to the game. I would recommend a 5 day stay so the positives of Pungwe can be appreciated. A 2 day package is insufficient.

The camp & staff When we arrived we where very warm welcomed by Michel and his team, from the first moment he gives you the feeling to be welcome, like he was waiting for old friends to show up! Being in the manyeleti for 28 years, I don’t think there is somebody better suited to host you. All the other staff just kept on going with the same amount of passion about their work and this reflects on the guest. The tents are spacious and very clean, all with direct views into the bush and privacy. Being an unfenced camp gives this place the wild feeling that most guest are looking for and that is very rare in South Africa. Please keep it this way. The first night we heard leopard, lion & hyena in 1 hour time, and in the morning we could see the tracks walking past the tents, this

This is a must go! Staying here really gives you the bush experience as it should be. With only 4 tents, a maximum of 8 people can stay in the camp. No fences, no electricity and animals walking through the camp. The rangers are great during the gamedrives en walkes and have a lot of knowledge about the busy. It has been the best experience of our trip!

A true and authentic bush experience, wilderness at its best. Dining under the stars, having lions chasing buffalloes 10 meters away from our table! Once in a lifetime! Special thanks to the staff cooking wonders on the fire, and making everything so confortable. Will be back, for sure!

We stayed at Pungwe for the first three days of our honeymoon. All I can say is wow! The staff were fabulous and that includes all the ladies who looked after the camp especially Violet and Lucky, the Chef Rob, and our tracker and guide Isaac and Wander. On our game drives the guys did their utmost to not only find all the animals we wanted to see but provide us with experiences, whether it was a lion mating or finding the right spot that a hippo would cross in front of us. Returning back to camp to a beautifully prepared tent complete with bath and exceptional food and service. Can’t recommend highly enough. No negatives except saying goodbye.
