Words cannot describe our time at Londolozi. It was a dream hotel with an A++ staff! First, when you arrive the entire group of staff taking care of you over the duration of your stay greets you as your car pulls up. The next game drive was leaving in an hour which we did not want to miss so they made sure to get us fed quickly and gave us a quick rundown of our stay. Jenna - the camp manager was unbelievable. She was always on top of her stuff, she knew the meaning of 5 star hospitality. The lodge and rooms at the Varty camp (and all of the other camps) are out of a luxury design magazine. Sitting in these areas to dine or read a book between drives is so surreal. They are extremely accommodating - some days after the AM drive we wanted breakfast or lunch back on our deck at our private chalet while taking a dip in the pool and they will arrange that for you. Everything you could want - they will coordinate. I have heard they write down what previous guests enjoy while staying there and the next time they come, they will make sure to have it for them. It's the "Londolozi Way". Every morning I asked for green tea and when I went to the lodge before the drive - it was there just for me. It truly is all about the little things and the incredible attention to detail that make this place a remarkable hotel. You go out on two game drives a day, we enjoyed going off roading to track down the big 5! I want to give a huge shoutout to our Ranger and Tracker - Patrick and Darence- what a team! They were meant to be doing this. Patrick is so fun and professional and provided a wealth of information and Darence is so kind and great at what he does! I looked forward to going out on our daily drives with them. If you are lucky enough to get Patrick as your Ranger - he is also a very good singer!! How can I forget the morning coffee/tea breaks and the sundowners aka happy hour in the bush with our group. When you come back from your drives, they have cold towels to help refresh you. For dinner each night, it is a surprise which I LOVED. The first night was in the burma - situated around a fire pit and lanterns all over - out of a storybook! We hung out with the staff after dinner just talking around the fire with some of the best wine, it was a night to remember. The next night was dinner in the bush and the third night - we had a private dinner at our chalet. We went back to our room after our afternoon drive and there were bubbles in the tub with champagne, candles, rose petals and a table set up on our deck. They honestly were all days/nights I could never forget. I have traveled all around the world and stayed at some very nice hotels and nothing holds a candle to Londolozi. Once again, the gourmet food, the entire amazing staff, attention to detail, lodging decor + cleanliness, etc. I feel I made friends there, they weren't just staff. I cannot wait to go back one day and take my entire family. I am so happy a place like this exists.

Embarrassingly, I have to admit that I did not know too much about Londolozi before my partner surprised me with a long weekend there. I had heard bits and pieces about the Varty family but was amazed by the impact that they have had on the area, the animals, and our beautiful country as a whole. It isn't easy to know where to start, but I guess the voice notes while we were on our way to advise which gates to use showcased their involvement in your journey from the start. Our tracker Shadrack met us before the gates to suggest where to go so that when we arrived at the camp, we were greeted by a wall of smiling, waving, happy people, who all introduced themselves to us and helped get us settled. Our first contact was with Jenna, who took us through some of the basics while ordering a drink and our lunch. She was thorough and welcoming. When our food arrived, we started the journey of deliciousness which did not stop until we consumed the last morsel of food on our last day. We were shown our room and given practical advice on navigating the paths, times to be back for game drives, and the in’s and out’s of the room. We were so overwhelmed with the beauty of the room, with no luxury left out. The bathroom was my favourite place, just how perfectly laid out it was, with all the amenities you could ask for right at your fingertips. The shower was expertly laid out with a 180-degree view of the deck and valley below, but on top of that, there was an outdoor shower as well, which we used after a quick dip in the plunge pool on a hot afternoon. The bed was an Emperor King size bed, which ensured our sleep was uninterrupted and solidly deep enough to wake refreshed each day. The fully stocked mini-bar was perfectly laid out, with fresh ice every day, a new lemon for the G’nT’s, and stunning South African wines. After unpacking, we set off for our first game drive and met our Safari car guests. We were so lucky to have met Rob and Tracey, who are Londolozi regulars, and gave us such good information about the lodges, the Varty family, and of course, the animals. They were an additional treat for us over and above the expertise of the Guide Guy and Tracker Shadrack. Joining our team was honeymooners Danique and Andre, who were as excited about the animals and game drive as we were. All in all, we had a great group of friends by the end of the weekend. Our guiding team The pair to be reckoned with, Guy and Shadrack, were terrific. Their detailed knowledge of the bush, the animal behaviour and of course, their unrestrained excitement at every prominent siting we came across was infectious. Every time we turned a corner to find a Leopard or did a few hours of tracking to see the Lions, their reactions were the same. Their skills were so evident in knowing where to go, what to look out for, and find the animals we were there to see. It is also a skill to learn how to act around them and knows when to leave, which both men were highly skilled at. We did a morning walk the one morning, and at every turn, we learned something new about the bush. They so willingly imparted their knowledge with their passion for nature and the animals they protect. They even arranged for our breakfast to be delivered to the vehicle after our walk, which we all enjoyed while watching elephants walking to the river to drink and knowing at the back of our minds that the lioness we had seen on arrival was nearby. At no stage did we feel unsafe in the competent hands of Guy and Shadrack. The management team Duncan, Ian, Jenna, Ashley, and the rest of their team ran the camp with seamless precision. You can see how well they all respect each other, the guests, and the Varty family. They all speak so highly of each other, which is an endearing trait. They made us feel so welcome, part of the family, and want for nothing. Our butler, Cute, was divine. Although we kept her on her toes with a change of drinks regularly, she was always at our side with a smile. The healing house We made use of the spa facilities at Varty Camp. Our therapists Praicy and Sam worked their magic, and we left there raving about their massage skills and the fact that my sore shoulders had dissipated to mush after Sam spent an hour on my body with her healing hands. It is recommended to take advantage of their skills in this magnificent setting. The food If you are a foodie, you will not be disappointed. Chef Eric produced a range of meals that everyone loved. Every meal resulted in empty plates, a clear indication of the delicious and inviting meals that they create for you with a sense of ease. The extra special touches On our last evening, the team arranged an extended drinks evening in the bush for us, with a spread of snacks and lanterns. It was so phenomenal to spend the extra few hours speaking with the team about their home, dreams, and plans for the future. Unfortunately, our time there had to come to an end, but not without the team getting our car ready, ensuring we had ice-cold water for the trip home, our bags in the car, and a hug from each of the group, as we left feeling like we had to say goodbye to family. I do not doubt that we will be back. We have to ensure that we can still support the great work the Varty family is doing in conservation in that beautiful and protected part of our country. If you can visit the Sabi Sands, please consider them as your preferred destination. You won’t be sorry.

And once more we are back home after having spent some amazing days at Londolozi. After having been living in South Africa, my husband and I try to travel back with our children to this beautiful country once a year. This year it was our 11th time. Our favorite area is definitely Sabi Sands. There are lots of other amazing areas for safari, but the “real safari” in our opinion happens in Sabi Sands. The safaris are exciting, as you can go off-road and follow the tracs of the Big 5 and many more beautiful animals. Staying at Londolozi makes your stay even more unforgettable. The luxury accommodation offers a main deck with an open view over the river. The scenery is awesome. Each room has its own private deck with a small swimming pool. No better place to spend your day having a nap or observing animals passing by. With our teenage kids we had a lot of fun on the game drives. Dan and Freddy are simply The Best! Very attentive, passionate to follow each track until finding the animal. Thanks to their big knowledge of animals and plants, they could explain every detail and answer to any question. We had so much fun, we shared the same way humor! A very big thank you to Will, Sam and Katélin, and of course to the the whole team we didn’t see, who organized our daughter’s 18th birthday dinner in the middle of the bush. No words to describe our feelings, in Livia’s words: “it was so much better than any party could have been”. Dan asked us in a hidden way if we like pizza. Of course, after many days having been spoiled by excellent quality meals three times a day, what could be better than fresh prepared pizza by Will in an original pizza charcoal oven in the middle of the bush after delicious drinks and aperitif for the sundowner. Londolozi has spoiled us so much. And in addition a Hyena and Giraffe passed by.... We are back home, I could jump into the next airplane and go back... for the third time! We already do miss this place with its great people! Thanks to the good Wifi, my husband could join on this trip and do his business meetings via videoconference directly from our room or sitting in a cosy corner somewhere in the lodge. One important detail I would like to mention: These difficult times affected by the Coronavirus made us hesitate to travel from Switzerland to South Africa. We were very close to cancel many times until two days before travelling. We are very happy not to have cancelled! We have not been worried one only moment. All South African are very respectful and strict regarding the Covid sanitary roles. Wearing masks, social distancing etc., even the PCR test you need for your flight back home is organized to be done in the lodge. Maybe it is even more secure than going to the shopping mall in our country!
