Singita Ebony Lodge stands steadfast among enormous trees on the banks of the Sand River and offers guests a fresh and contemporary interpretation of classic safaris. Combining the design highlights of tented camps and bush lodges, the original Singita lodge was inspired by the adventure and charm of old-world explorers’ camps and features campaign furniture, natural fibres and polished wood. Each of the 12 luxurious suites includes its own private plunge pool and almost all external walls have been replaced with glass and canvas to optimise views and space. Outdoor decks suspended off the river banks invite laidback dining and relaxing, allowing guests to be fully immersed in the natural surrounds. This idyllic family retreat is set in the heart of South Africa’s Big Cat country and the lodge features two Lewis suites right next to each other – ideal for families with teenage children; as well as two family suites that are perfect for families with small children. An exclusive-use villa – comprising two family suites – offers a full staff complement and complete seclusion. Located in Singita Sabi Sand in South Africa, Ebony Lodge provides guests with access to 45,000 acres of an incredible wildlife sanctuary that’s renowned for its high concentrations of big game and frequent leopard sightings.

Singita Ebony Lodge
As we were welcomed to Ebony by Miranda, I told her Ebony had very big shoes to fill, as we had just come from Boulders, a spectacular experience. Well fill those shoes they did!!
Miranda and Claude were constantly on hand, attending to every detail. On arrival at our room, we found it stocked with our preferred drinks, specifics, the correct brand of beer and everything we had consumed at Boulders.
The room was magnificent, so beautifully decorated, immaculately clean and so very comfortable. There were a couple of days, we tossed up whether to game drive, or just stay in the room!
We made good use of the laundry, so professionally done. On a return from a game drive, Miranda approached me, with a handful of buttons. She had been informed that there was a button missing from one of my shirts. As the button could not be found, would I mind, if they replaced all the buttons, with the samples she showed me. What a service!!
Every meal again was of the highest standard, beautifully presented and just so delicious. I still need to hound the mussel soup recipe from David. The best I have ever had. As was the millionaires shortbread
The attention from the barista, sommelier and every member of staff was a delightful interaction. With extensive knowledge on their subject.
The absolute highlight of our trip, had the be the effort Claude put into our final game drive drinks. He set up our own private set up, which could have been an extension of the lodge. So thoughtfully decorated, items of decor selected particularly.
Andries and Nkosinathi led us through incredible bush walks, took us on drives, and shared their extensive knowledge and stories with us. We had an incredible week with them, we have made two new friends.

Dear Robyn, The Hippos are calling you both! Thank you so much for your beautiful message – it was a privilege to have hosted yourself and Chris at Ebony Lodge. We shared such wonderful moments with you both. We really hope that we will see you soon again – you have to come back to have another sundowner at “Watkins lookout”. The entire Singita Ebony family are sending you our warmest wishes and thanks. Kind regards, Claude and Marinda Visagie

We have just returned from Singita Ebony which for us was a very special occasion. So first time travelling since lockdown and a BIG birthday with our very special friends. The trip from Cape Town is fairly easy on Airlink, then there's about an hour drive to the lodge from Skukuza and the rangers that are allocated to you for the trip greet you and transfer you to the lodge.
We were fortunate to have Piet and Lawrence who really made the trip extra special. They are competent rangers and have so much local knowledge. The vehicles are comfortable and equipped with warm blankets, poncho's and binoculars. We had rain on two of the five drives which made it a little uncomfortable, but for the second drive they did put on a roof covering. We saw some spectacular sightings of at least 300 buffalo at a watering hole and a pack of 9 very energetic and playful wild dog, who we watched for ages! We were a bit disappointed in that we only saw one lioness, which is the first time that has happened on a bush trip. We did see a leopard though very close to camp on the first drive out, which was special. A black mamba made it's appearance three times on another drive which is always rather scary! The sunset drinks are always pleasant and the staff ensure whatever your favorite drink is, is available. The Hendriks and lite tonic tasted so much nicer in that setting.

All drinks are inclusive at this lodge, even the mini bar, which is far from mini, has all your best quality drinks available.

You have brunch / lunch when you return from your morning drive, anytime until 13h30 which is great, staff are all so accommodating with special fussy requests! Nothing is too much for them and I believe the staff are the greatest asset in this lodge and certainly sets them apart from others. We were allocated our own special waiter / barman, Robert, who was delightful and tried so hard to please.

There is a high tea at about 15h00 before the afternoon / evening drive. Dinner was once in the boma, which always makes a safari experience even better.

The spacious rooms are so comfortable, with everything you could possibly need, very comfy beds and fireplace, aircons, outside shower, loads of cupboard space, plunge pool that can be heated, all overlooking a magnificent river with various animals around. Housekeeping service the rooms at least three times a day.

All staff and management are very customer centric and make the stay memorable.

Ebony is an authentic lodge without being over the top and you do get a true safari experience.

Hi Bernice Thank you so much for the kind words in detailing your recent Singita Ebony experience. We have been so excited and thrilled to get to have the opportunity to share our wonderful world with guests again. The game sightings have been extraordinary of late and to get to see the large herd of buffalo as well as a pack of wild dogs is very special. Piet and Lawrence are true gems in our ranks and we are so glad that you enjoyed the experience with them. Robert has been with us for over 20 years and still goes out of his way with guests. Thank you again for coming through and experiencing our world with us, and also thank you so much for your humbling words. We hope to welcome you back soon. Kind regards, Kenny Smith Assistant Lodge Manager, Singita Ebony Lodge

We discovered Africa for the First time with Singita .
Ebony lodge is the first of the Singita lodges created in 1993.
While rooms would welcome a face lift ( soon to happen ) there is a colonial charm unrivalled .
The whole organisation is flow less. You are taken over by a team form the guide to the waitress that will be your staff up to your departure .
Food and wine are just amazing and you can taste SA during your whole stay.
Thanks good there is no Tv in the rooms but the internet is fairly good assuming you are in the middle of nowhere . It allowed out teenager to even play online with friends !!
A special reward to our Guide Johan and tracker Reazert.
They made our trip magical making us discover the Big Five and explaining us a lot of things . They were fun, interesting and always smiling .
If you go to Singita Ebony ask for them and do not forget to make them prepare their coffee with Amarula in the middle of the bush!!!!
Bravo to the owner Luke Bailes who has created amazing places with a full respect of the nature !

I cannot day enough wonderful things about this lodge. You are catered to in the most natural of environments. Our guide, Mark Taylor Bowles was absolutely spectacular and I really believe made the whole experience so much more than I ever could have expected. - request him. There are other Marks there so make sure you say his last name. And our tracker Golden - request him as well. They amped up the fun. We laughed , they made some amazing gin drinks and we did not want to say goodbye. The hotel is festive, easy-going and works around you. We had wine tastings, gin tastings, foods to try, and they let you go to dining room whenever you want. This place gets an A+.

Thank you so much, we really appreciate your review! Marc and Golden have built a great partnership and they are passionate about sharing the bush with guests, we're so glad you got to experience them while staying with us. Thank you for the special mention of all the wining and dining too. Is there anything better than a Gin & Tonic in the bush? We hope to have you back soon, either at Singita Ebony Lodge or one of our other lodges in the not too distant future. Until then, take care! Kenny Smith Lodge Manager - Singita Ebony Lodge

We just returned from 4 days at Singita Ebony Lodge and were blown away. Singita was just over the top with luxury, service and had everting you could ask for or imagine. Our guide, George, and tracker, Israel, were great. Pat also make sure we had everyone we needed or could possibly want. The entire staff was amazing. The room was simply fabulous, from the comfortable sitting areas, the great outdoor space and plunge pool and the lovely fireplace that we certainly took advantage of. The food was amazing and if you didn’t see something you liked in the menu all you had to do was ask and they brought us anything we wanted. This trip (coupled with a 4 day stay in Botswana before arriving at Singita) was our first safari and we are so happy we were able to spend part of it at Singita. We felt so spoiled and it was hard to leave. Thank you to the entire staff at Singita!!

This was truly the best vacation my family and I have ever been on. From the beauty of the lodge itself to the ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE staff, rangers, and the animals, i couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The food was excellent, and not to mention every person that worked at this lodge couldn’t have been nicer. I’ve never felt closer to the staff at a hotel in my entire life! Whatever and whenever we needed something, they were there for us. Our two rangers, Andrew and Louis, showed us every animal imaginable and explained everything in precise detail- ask for them if you go! We felt extremely safe while out in the middle of all the animals, and in the comfort of the resort. I would recommend Singita Ebony (and ALL Singita resorts- we also went to Singita Lebombo and had the same amazing experience) to everyone and anyone. We can’t wait to be back so soon! I don’t think you can get a better Africa experience!

We stayed for 5 nights. A short summary ...

7* Gareth (ranger) and Martin (tracker) as well as all the staff. Any request was immediately met. Appreciate putting us close to the main area. You were all amazing!
7* Sightings and more
5* Wines and drinks
5* SPA treatments!
3* for the Food. Felt it was too fancy for the bush. Would have appreciated more South African food?
2* for the Main pool area - loungers and pool dirty
5* for the bush dinner effort, 3* for food and 0* bushtoilet - broken, dirty and poor condition.
3* Waterpressure in room was poor to zero.

BUT, the few "less than 5* issues" were overshadowed by the wonderful staff, amazing wildlife and bush. Can't wait to bring our family!!

If you are thinking of going to Singita DO. My husband and I spent 7 days there for our honeymoon - 4 nights in Ebony Lodge and 2 nights in Lebombo. We also visited Boulders (next to Ebony) for dinner. This stay could not have been more perfect. I have had the good fortune to stay in many luxury properties accross the US and in Europe, including other Relais and Chateaux properties, Four Seasons, etc. Singita was the best experience of them all -- firstly, the setting of all the properties is beautiful, and the buildings are stunningly, originally, and beautifully decorated. The buildings themselves are interesting, and sited and constructed with great sensitivitly to the environment (aesthetically; I know nothing about their green status). Basically, as beautiful as it looks in the photos, it is, and at all levels - the common rooms, dining rooms, guest rooms, and spa. Also, the vehicles are in great condition, and the rangers and trackers highly skilled. We saw the most amazing animal action. This area does not have the density of game you see in Botswana but it does have the big cats and rhinos. We saw leopards and lions at the kill in some hair-raising scenes, though we always felt safe and in good hands.

The way the property really outdid itself was in the warmth and sincerity of the staff. All the people who work there - from the guides who escort you to your suite at night, the ladies who work in the kitchen, the trackers and rangers, to the managers, all were nice, courteous, and seemed genuinely happy to have us as their guests. We have never been so well taken care of. Also, they really work hard to entertain: every evening dinner would be served in a different room, beautifully candle lit, or outside by a bonfire in the "booma". The food was to die for, and they really do have a massive wine cellar with a first class selection of South African wines, any of which they are happy to open for you at no additional charge. All of the lodges are of the same quality. However, Lebombo/Sweni is brand new and is exceptionally special if you like a modern place - it is on a much more picturesque piece of property. Our room was a glass box cantilevered high up on a cliff overlooking a river with hippos. Singita has recently been named a T&L best hotel and they deserve it more than most. If you are looking for a unique (not cookie cutter) luxurious African safari, save up and spend the money on Singita -- it is worth it!

Based on our recent experience of five different South African lodges, three with Singita (Lebombo, Sweni, Ebony) and two in other Relais & Chateaux (Kwandwe and Camp Jabulani) (all reviewed on tripadvisor), I think Singita does provide the highest level of luxury in terms of accommodation, staff service, food or beverages offerings. But Singita also applies higher rates than competitors of the Relais & Chateaux network in South Africa,: all the Singita luxury comes at a price. (By the way, the lodges in South Africa seem to be a small world: we found at Ebony a staff member we had dealt with at Kwandwe one year ago.)
If you are ready to indulge yourself with Singita, this review focuses on the criteria to take into account to choose Ebony or another lodge within the Singita network.
The level of luxury offered is the same in all the Singita lodges we experienced; all guides are well trained experts. Therefore, I think choosing one lodge rather than another should be based only on 1) the animals you most want to see and 2) the atmosphere you appreciate for your stays at the lodge between safari activities.
First, safari viewings. Of course, you'll see a lot of wildlife in all the Singita lodges but some are more or less specialized. Located in the Sabi Sand area, Ebony is very good to see leopards and wild dogs (lycaons), animals that are much harder to find in the Kruger area. My recommendation would be to visit two lodges in two different areas if you want to take the best of South Africa.
Second, atmosphere. Ebony is a medium size lodge (Sweni is much smaller, Lebombo much larger). It looks like a very old british-style lodge, with many antiques all around. We found the suites a bit dark (a lot of wood, not so many windows) and dated; we preferred the modern and opened spaces of Lebombo or Sweni. If you want to spend time in your room watching the wildlife I would recommend one of these two last lodges. Note also that the Sabi Sand reserve has a much cooler climate than the Kruger park (Lebombo or Sweni). It can be something you want to take into account when planing your trip.
To come back to our stay at Ebony, it is very hard to find anything that Singita can improve there (except renovating / transforming the suites, which would mean changing deeply the lodge identity). Anyhow we were somehow disappointed by the main pool at Ebony. Water was murky, location was not great, and obviously almost nobody ever uses it. If you want to swim, prefer the pools at Lebombo or Sweni.
