Situated in a perfect position on the banks of the Sand River, with sweeping river views from every vantage point, lies &Beyond Tengile River Lodge. Meaning ‘tranquil’ in the local language, the lodge certainly has an advantage over all others in the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve. The Sabi Sand Nature Reserve benefits from a great diversity of wildlife including the Big Five as it neighbours and shares a 50 km (31 mi) unfenced boundary with the iconic Kruger National Park. World-renowned for its prolific leopard sightings, strict vehicle limits at sightings ensure the exclusivity of an up-close game viewing experience with game drives traversing an area of 10,500 hectares (26,000 acres). This magnificent lodge features nine enormous, air-conditioned, secluded suites, dotted in the dappled shade of the bushveld, each with panoramic river views.

After 2 1/2 years and 2 postponements we finally made it to Africa with our first stop at the Tengile River Lodge. The gentleman, Wayde, who ended up being our guide for the game drives met us at the Skukuza Airport and we made the 25-30 minute ride to the lodge. On the way we saw numerous animals and Wayde filled us in on the local topograhy and flora and fauna of the area. We were met by a welcoming group of management and staff and briefed in the lobby, while sipping a cool drink, on what to expect on our visit. We then shuttled in a golf cart a short 200 meters and entered a beautifully appointed and large unit. It was quite a bit larger than I expected and included a private pool, covered patio overlooking the river and a stocked bar. This went well beyond the "glamping" I was expecting. After a brief rest and look around the place , we headed back to the lobby for a 3:30 briefing on our first game drive.

We made five game drives in the 3 days we spent at the lodge and without detailing every single thing, I can best summarize them by saying we saw the "Big Five" in the first two hours of that drive. Wayde and our tracker Richard knew the area like the back of their hand and somehow always managed to be where the animals were located. Richard would periodically leave the vehicle and trek off into the bush only to turn up 30-40 minutes later to lead us off the trail to a leopard guarding its recent kill up in a tree or an elephant with a young calf. Although every viewing was a highlight, we did come across a Rhino and its calf that still had their horns. In order to save them from mercenary poachers, Wayde immediately called in their location to the local game authorities. Finally, no drive was complete without an evening "sundowner" cocktail or morning Chocoamurula stop somewhere out in the bush or riverbed.

Now to the food and drinks. There is an intimate bar and restaurant and the food was generally outstanding. Although tasty, I did find the Kudu to be a little on the tough side, however , the beef that I had was melt in your mouth tender and the side dishes always well prepared. The bar was a great place to relax after the drive and the bartender was ready to mix your favorite drink.

This was a "bucket list" trip for my wife and I and it lived up to all our expectations. The folks with "andBeyond" did an incredible job and fulfilled every promised aspect of the trip. We worked with their travel agent Wendy who made it all happen and stuck with us over the 2 1/2 years of delays and postponements. I highly recommend both the Tegile River Lodge and the "andBeyond" group for Africa and apparently numerous other spots around the globe.

This is without doubt the best spot ever .
Firstly the setting is on a running river - relatively unusual in the Kruger .
Secondly the buildings and decor fit seamlessly into the landscape . Imagine steam punk does camouflage . The main areas are all open and spacious with beautiful seating areas, dining areas , bar, boma and fire pit .
3. Our room was exceptional- 200sqm of room and deck overlooking the river . A bar/coffee area overlooking a lounge and outside sunken seating area . There is also a pool , outside shower and an area with sun loungers. The apartment is floor to ceiling glass with a big bedroom , bathroom , separate toilet and closet . All rooms have a view of the river. The bar fridges are fully stocked; there is a coffee machine and snacks .
4. The staff are incredibly warm, welcoming and kind . From your Porter, to your ranger to the mixologist !
5. The food is delicious, fresh, uncomplicated and super tasty .
6. The game viewing is incredible .
7. You won’t know you have neighbours as it’s so quiet .
8. There are golf carts to take you to your room if you don’t want the exercise.
9. You can expect delicious shots as you return from your game drive at night and the mixologist has 200 plus cocktails to delight you with .
10. Do not miss this absolutely 5 star plus lodge .

Tengile is is a wonderful experience in every respect.

The lodge is a beautiful property that fits in well with the surrounding countryside, overlooking the Sand River. Dining is on a pleasant patio, and there is a cozy bar with a great mixologist where you can enjoy post drive drinks. Our suite was large, with a comfortable sitting area, well stocked bar, outside sitting area, large bedroom, large bathroom including an outdoor shower and our own pool. All overlooking the river where we saw elephants and many antelopes during our stay. We enjoyed delicious lunches delivered to our room at the time we wanted them. Freddy, our butler, is amazing and kept us very comfortable throughout our stay. He has a way of being all ready to look after guests for whatever is needed, from food and beverages, to getting us back and forth to our suite via golf cart.

Our guide, Rich, and spotter, Eckson, who has a cheery sense of humor, are among the best we’ve had on many game drives in Africa. They came up with spectacular sightings including a camera loving leopard, lion cubs, lions drinking, wild dogs, an elephant shaking a tree with a leopard sitting in it, and many other wonderful experiences. We were introduced to Mochachocarula (try it) during evening sundowner drinks in the bush. On returning to the lodge from games drives we were met by staff with cold facecloths and were ready to set us up at the bar or with dinner arrangements.

Food at Tengile is exceptionally good and each meal has several choices. Meals are served at individual tables but we had one great dinner in the Boma with the guests in our shared vehicle and Rich.

The laundry service is very good, WiFi is also very good (no phone signal in the lodge), shop with clothes and other safari related items, suites are tidied up whenever guests are out, and there’s a soaker tub in the bathroom.

I have been doing safaris in east Africa and southern Africa for many years and Tengile is one of the most enjoyable experiences to date. The wonderful staff make the stay here a great memory that will last a lifetime.

We came to Tengile in January 2022 as part of our honeymoon. While andBeyond has been around for some time, Tengile is new only opening in 2019. Given the timing it sometimes doesn't appear in certain lists of top Safari lodges in Sabi Sands, however, I imagine that will soon change and it will be on everyone's top list. Tengile is incredibly expensive, but you are paying for the location in Sabi Sands with wonderful game and the stunning lodge and luxurious rooms.

The Lodge. Stunning location right along the river, the design of the lodge is beautifully done with some classic African looks blended with modern twists. We especially loved the stunning bar, the outdoor sunken fire pit, and the the outdoor dining area where they do braais (bbq). The food and drinks were top notch here as well, we are big foodies and we thought the food was incredibly well done and there was variety in cuisine each day.

The Rooms. Probably the #1 feature of Tengile, the rooms were massive with so many cool features. Each room has their own private dipping pool, living room, outdoor lounge area that overlooks the river, and outdoor shower. We loved hanging out in our room and if you wanted to they would gladly bring you breakfast or lunch to your room.

The Game Drives. There is a reason why Sabi Sands lodges are priced so high, the game is phenomenal. We saw Leopards 3 out of 4 days, one walked 5 feet from our car. Lots of Lions, Elephants, Giraffes, Hippo, etc. And a very cool experience for me was a massive white Rhino and her baby. In Sabi Sands it is all dirt roads and you go on a 4x4 to explore, the guides are not afraid to go off-road either to get you the best view. Every day is a new adventure, it never got old.

The People. Warren was our ranger and was incredible. It's not just a job to him but a personal passion, and that clearly shows. He was so incredibly knowledgable about all the animals and birds, but what stood out was his personality, he ensured everyone in our vehicle had a great time. Eckson was our game tracker, he helped our vehicle find many animals that we would otherwise never have seen. Moses was our butler and was always on top of things, remembering our preferences and always being attentive. Selby and Senza were both incredibly good mixologists and fun bartenders. Housekeeping was amazing too, we game back one day and they had even cleaned our shoes, which we didn't ask for but they just did. All around service was like this.

We went here for part of our honeymoon to South Africa for a 4 night stay. Overall we loved the property and the safari game drives were epic. If you're looking for a luxury experience on a safari, this should definitely be on your radar. However, there are definitely more economical options with the same quality safari experience (Kirkman's camp).

Game viewing was amazing. Both on the drives and at the lodge/room. We saw plenty of leopards, elephants, rhinos, etc. Elephants from your own room by the river was almost a daily occurrence as well as plenty of the other animals (water buffalo, zebras, antelope, etc.).

The staff at the lodge were amazing to us. Matt and Richard who were our game drive guide and tracker were amazing. We saw the big 5 in 24 hours and had great luck on safari with plenty of sightings. Matt was extremely informative and communicated it in a very free flowing and conversational manner while also keeping you engaged and looking for new things. Richard was on point with pointing out seemingly impossible to see signs of animals we were in search for.

At camp, Moses made sure we were well taken care of. Great hospitality and also conversation. Selby was an amazing bartender and Bianca gave us a private cooking class which we really enjoyed.

If you're used to being pampered on vacation, this place will suit you. However you'll likely be able to find a few issues wrong with it. Once you take into account how remote this location is, it's nothing you won't look past in a heartbeat.

This is a WOW property. We originally had booked Kirkman's, but decided to splurge and upgrade. The room was hands down the nicest of our 6 &Beyond camps in a 3 weeks trip. The game drives where also very productive. Rhino's where a priority for me, and we ran into a rhino on the road 5 minutes into the first game drive. Chris was our guide and Lucky was our tracker, and they were great. On morning game drives, we would stop for a break and Bush cappuccino using French press to pump froth milk (did not have that offered at any other camp). The games drives were a little rough at times. We were racing at one point trying to get to wild dogs (radio'd from another vehicle), and had to slam the breaks coming around a blind turn as there was a Rhino and her baby on the road (scared them and they ran off, but fortunate it was not worse). And went off road in the dark one evening into thick brush following some lions went two other vehicles stayed on the road. Even while ducking, I took a branch in the face/eye. I know they where trying to show us a good time, and I appreciated that, but accepted a bit too much risk in doing so I think. Still, we had great game drives and enjoyed our stay. If returning, at the same price difference (almost 2x) I would probably try Kirkman's next time (if price was closer (<50% more), I would do Tengile).

We stayed here as part of our honeymoon. It was easily the best hotel we’ve ever stayed at. The service was unreal, staff knew your name and went above and beyond at all times. The game drives were incredible - we saw the big 5 multiple times, amazing experiences with leopard and lion and rhino especially. Our ranger Vusi and tracker Lucky were more than we could have ever asked for and put in tremendous effort to look for the animals we wanted to see and listened to our interests. They were extremely knowledgeable about the animals, land, and history of the area. Multiple surprises also thrown in during game drivers. Sundowners in the bush are incredible.

The lodge “rooms” are huge and extremely luxurious. The plunge pool and sunken living room in the room was great while relaxing during the afternoon. The room has a fully stocked bar, fireplace, and really everything you could ask for (and more). We had lunches in the room and dinner a couple times in the room. Boma dinner and overall food at the lodge was phenomenal.

We were so sad to leave! Thank you Tengile River Lodge team (especially Vusi and Lucky) for providing us with life long memories!!! So grateful for this experience.

It is difficult to adequately express me and my wife's gratitude to the staff at Tengile. We traveled in March and had an extraordinary time. We still daydream about our time here. The "rooms," which are actually house-sized with a private pool, are beautifully decorated and comfortable. I don't think I've ever stayed in such luxury. But, really, the staff is what makes this place special. Everyone works so hard on your behalf. Everyone, from the folks in the kitchen to the servers to the housekeepers to the guides. &Beyond is a great company and has so many great people. You won't be sorry for coming here.

Our stay at Tengile River lodge was nothing short of spectacular. We went as a group of 14 friends in celebration of a 40th birthday and the stay was absolutely sublime. The lodge is stunning and every detail is considered. The rooms were beautiful and there was a part of me that never wanted to leave it but with the game awaiting us, we had to head into the bush. The game viewing was the best I have ever experienced and we had seen the whole big 5 by our second drive. We saw interactions with elephants and lions, wild dogs confronting a lone Lioness and multiple leopard sightings. The ranger combo of Dylan and Matt F as well as our trackers Jophet (who we dubbed 'The Prophet) and Eckson were engaging, fun, so knowledgeable and made our game drives mind blowing. All the staff at Tengile was a huge highlight - Tanya, Caitlin, Saskia on front of house, Senzo and Selby the in house mixologists, Freddy and Thomas our butlers and Tammi and Bianca on food. What a team. Every member of staff we came across was warm, friendly and we felt at home from the minute we walked in. I never wanted to leave.

If you are thinking about staying at Tengile, don't hesitate...book it immediately.

We have stayed at 11 different private luxury lodges in South Africa and we would rate the accomodations at Tengile in the top 2 or 3. The suites are large and beautiful and the location overlooking the river is superb. Our only minor disappointment was that the service was not 5 star. We only drink water and Coke Light and despite having this request on our pre-visit questionaire, we only had 3 Cokes in our fridge. No problem. We just requested more. One day later we still hadn't received them so we had to ask a second time. They finally arrived the afternoon before we left. It's hard to explain but the staff was just not as friendly as the other lodges we have visited. Don't get me wrong, they were very nice. It's just that I felt that they were going thru the motions. I made this reservation over 2 years prior. We were not able to take our trip as originally planned because the Lodge was closed because of Covid. We did not request a refund but rather we agreed to postpone our trip for a year. Even when the lodge reopened and we were able to travel to S.A. travelling from the U.S. was not an easy thing. But we went anyway. The staff at the first lodge we visited on this trip made it so clear to us how happy they were to have us there. They were just so glad to have guests back and you could feel their excitement. They thanked us over and over again-From the General Manager to the housekeeper. We were made to feel welcome by every staff member. It did not feel anything like that at Tengile. We found ourselves thanking them for everything yet we did not hear one "thank you for coming" the whole time we were there. It was almost like they sent out elitist vibes. But like I said, they were still very nice people.

Hi there, Thank you for your question. We do occasionally organise helicopter rides but it is arranged through a third party (i.e. not ourselves) and it is a significant drive away from the lodge, often resulting in our guests having to spend the day away and missing at least one game drive. Let me know if you are still interested, and I can find out a price for you. Kind regards, Josh
