Au d'Hex Estate adds to the charming beauty of one of South Africa's undiscovered gems, Wellington. The elegantly restored owner-managed Au d'Hex Boutique Restaurant, Manor House (Hotel) and Wedding Venue lies in the heart of the South African winelands. The converted Cape Dutch homestead, dating back to 1798, is one of Wellington's most historic locations.

Spent a night at this boutique hotel recently not knowing what to expect. Very pleasantly surprised! On the outskirts of Wellington amongst picturesque scenery we arrived one Saturday morning. We were warmly greeted by the staff particularly Maree who treats one like a friend. This before we had even found the hotel's front door. Check in is very informal which is great. The rooms of which I believe there are 10 of are immaculately appointed and ultra clean. Good quality linen, towels, complimentary soaps and shampoo. It's seldom one finds an establishment that is so well cared for. Before booking the hotel there was a note saying that they are to close for 3 weeks in July for renovations which made me a tad suspicious. Tired and run down I thought. Quite the opposite in fact. Other than a recent storm destroying their stunning Morroccan/Bedoin tent over the dam I personally could not understand where the renovations would be done. Upstairs is an amazing large room under thatch, quite breathtaking. We travel a lot and stay at some topnotch places but this venue is right up there with the best both nationally and internationally. We sat down for lunch under the grape vined pergola. The leaves at this time of year had turned a beautiful red making it a perfect place to take in the view. Our Waiter with an interesting name, Admire, was well dressed as are all the staff and very attentive and entertaining. The 3 course lunch was absolutely perfect, in fact we went back the following weekend for the same lunch as it was so good and were surprisingly greeted by name. Impressed! Breakfast matches this high standard with beautiful crockery, decor with a French theme and fresh roses on all tables. I hate plastic flowers!! Top marks to the owners and staff for taking such pride in a well run and maintained establishment. Definately on my radar for return visits! Highly recommended. And I can be quite critical!

Fantastic country hotel just on the outskirts of Wellington.

Stunning location and grounds - so tranquil.

Staff were welcoming, friendly and extra helpful. Breakfast was included in the room price and was gorgeous. We also had a couple of lunches which were equally good. There's no restaurant here in the evening but good options locally only a short drive away.

The room was great- the bed really comfortable!

Small plunge pool but the whole stay was perfect.

Very easy to explore local wine cellars and the wonderful towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are easily accessible about 30-40 mins drive away! Would highly recommend!

We spent our wedding night and our anniversary (one year later) at Au De Hex and it is a dream boutique hotel for anyone getting married in the wine lands. The hotel can also be used as a wedding venue which we would highly recommend especially for South Africans living abroad who would like to get married in SA. It is the perfect base to explore the winelands and there are lovely restaurants in the vicinity. We have absolutely nothing negative to say about this hotel. The owner is lovely and chatted to us-ask her for details as to how the hotel was built (interesting). The staff are attentive and every detail is catered for including delicious restaurant food palted beautifully. Stunning jetty with pavilion cover where one can relax and enjoy a glass of wine as the sun sets over the mountains, winelands and small dam. Looking forward to many more trips to this special spot.

Venue is stunning with manicured rose gardens; but beware of the hidden costs! One single helpful waiter went above the call of duty to try and make up for absent management, poor communication and disappointing service.
We attended a wedding function and stayed in the hotel; when buying a cup of coffee at the bar, my wife was told that the coffee in her room should suffice(??!!!) breakfast was a ghastly overcooked bacon/sausage/egg mix, again with only a single waiter tending to a group of 20 or so.
Later we found that the juices and water laid out on the table was an added cost (for a prepaid meal); and the extra charges just came tumbling in after that.
Under the current management this gem of a venue is will close its doors prematurely. I Hope they wake up before it’s too late.

We unfortunately had a really crap experience at Au d’hex and from the reviews it doesn’t look as if we had been the only persons that had the same issue.

If you book accommodation there it would be best to have a second place in mind as a backup to stay over as they cancel your CONFIRMED booking without consulting you to make space for a wedding taking place.

We took time and effort to make sure we have enough accommodation for our guests over December and booked accommodation before hand as most of our guests coming to our wedding are traveling from far and Decembers are peak seasons in the Cape. Therefore we booked all their rooms and received email confirmation.

When we followed up again to make sure everything is still fine and if they can send us the details for the deposit as they have not done it yet, then only were we notified our booking is canceled as there is a wedding taking place at their venue and they require the accommodation. ???

Here we are, again looking for the perfect place which we thought we found just to be dropped and not cared about, hopefully one day they might stick to their booking sheet to inform people that there are currently bookings for that time thus that particular date is not available instead of dropping people that took time and effort to go and visit them, dropping people that booked that date first (12Months ahead) and took their own time to send followup emails.

I would like some feedback from the owners themselves If the owners gets to read this review.

Where do I even start.
It’s been 3 months since my wedding, and to date I still cannot overcome what has happened to us.

Besides the heat inside the glass house, which we all know is a problem - I want to share a different story.

We had about 94 guests in total at the venue for our wedding.
So we had a gift box on our main table for guests to drop a gift of currency.
During the evening of the reception, it came to our attention that one of the Aud Hex staff has removed the gift box from our table and move it to a less crowed area.
We noticed that everyone did not get the opportunity to provide us with a gift as everyone was asking where the gift should be dropped.
We then had to go fetch the gift box where the staff members has placed it (taking into consideration that this area is just another room not being used at the venue and only closed with curtains)

Later the night the box was then moved again to the isolated area without consulting us, and we just moved it back.

Also keeping in mind, that the venue had no power at various times during the evening due to load shedding and a faulty generator.
So in essence, the power was off most of the evening and there was no lighting.

The day after the wedding - we then noticed that the gift box was tampered with (as it had a flimsy lock on, which was not used to lock the box, but rather just to prevent the lid from being easily opened.)
We noticed the lock has been removed - we didn’t think much of it until we opened the box.

Out of the 94 guests who are very dear to our hearts, we only counted 12 envelopes inside the gift box, 12 envelopes that was equivalent to a 5 figure number.
We then started digging around and asking questions.
The 12 envelopes was all from the house hold family members who sat in the front row who got the opportunity to drop their gifts first (so it ended up at the bottom of the box)
All the remaining guests envelopes that was at the top of the pile is gone.
We then started asking our family members if they noticed anything, many people confirmed that the box were so full that they had to force their envelops into the box.
Some even confirmed and can proof that they had put in their envelop in the box, however out of the 12 envelopes, those specific people’s envelopes were not there.

We raised our concerns to Aud Hex and they assured us that they will review the footage to confirm if they can pickup any movements.
After multiple follow ups, 30 days later Aud Hex came back to us stating that after reviewing the footage, they have not picked up any suspicious movement and that the camera’s was pointing to the other direction of the venue..
(I will leave this just hear…..)

PS : disappointed customer.

We booked at Au d'Hex in February through booking.com, and our booking was confirmed on 10 February. We left for our holiday, which was a celebration of our 15th wedding anniversary, on 24 April, and were surprised to receive a telephone call from an Au d"Hex employee, while we were sitting in the airport, telling us that they had cancelled our booking as a wedding party which had allegedly only just booked, required our room. At that stage they made no offer to find us somewhere else to stay and the person speaking made it clear it was a decision of the owners rather than her own decision. After some heated conversation and argument, she agreed (eventually) to identify some alternatives as we were unable to access the internet while undertaking long distance travel. In 'recompense' for their conduct they offered a bottle of wine. We spent the two nights initially booked with Au d:Hex at a nearby wine estate, but needless to say the promised bottle did not appear. The lovely receptionist at our hotel contacted them to remind them of their offer, but they couldn't even be bothered to show up with the wine, and told the receptionist to give us a bottle from the estate we were staying on (one of the cheapest available of course).

If you look at the conditions of booking at this venue it states: 'You will be charged 50% of the total price if you cancel after reservation and a further 20% of the total price if you cancel in the 30 days before arrival', making, by my calculation, 70% in total. They however apparently consider themselves free to cancel with impunity without any recompense (or indeed genuine apology), and indeed without any obligation to find an alternative for guests whose contract they have broken.

This was the only negative experience of hotels we had in the Western Cape, but it was an extremely unpleasant and stressful start to our celebratory holiday.

I stayed in one of the Luxury Suites for two nights, and loved every minute of it. The room was beautifully furnished with much attention to detail. The hotel is surrounded by gorgeous rose gardens and situated at the shore of a lake with most amazing views of the distant mountains. On top of all that the breakfast was fantastic as well, the waiters and managerial staff very attentive and helpful in every way. I'm definitely coming back!

Recently, I attended Au de Hex for a three course lunch which I'd attained via a Groupon voucher. Admittedly, we didn't stay the night but I wish to express how outstanding the experience and how delicious the meal was.

We shared some of the house wine, whilst enjoying the pea and ham soup as a starter, the beef fillet for mains and the chocolate fondant with a latte for dessert.

The meal was absolutely outstanding. The soup reminded me of the kind of homely food I grew up with. The fillet was done perfectly and I was cheeky enough to ask to share my partners dessert after finishing my own.

Having spent four years in service and concierge myself, I was happily impressed with the food, the service from the staff and the establishments consideration for my changed bookings given my tentative schedule.

Au de Hex, I applaud your efforts and will be recommending your establishment to friends and family. Till next time, cheers!
