Stayed 3 nights in the vine suite. Private garden, big Weber braai, great service, enjoyed simple cooking with clean dishes. Can recommend for people who look for tranquility. Pool some 300m away at the main guest house, clean, cold drinks in the fridge and very friendly staff. Thanks to Privilege (name?) who warmly welcomed us.

In the middle of a charming valley (Wellington) framed by breath taking mountains like the Sevensisters, on a small hill lies Dunstone.
The owners have found here their life's work for the pension and are born hosts. With loving devotion, they read their guests' wishes from their lips: They make excellent recommendations for excursions, wine tastings and restaurants. Natasha writes handwritten messages with information for the day, which she places in front of the room... there is always a small gift: fresh cookies, chocolates. On Valentine's Day our rooms and beds were decorated with rose petals. In the afternoon at the pool we were surprised with small local snacks and wine from the in-house winery.
Quite apart from these and many other trinkets, the rooms are lovingly decorated, always clean, equipped with a kettle, various teas, coffee and milk for a good start to the day! We have felt welcome & at home.

Dunstone Country House is neither a B&B nor a hotel but boasts the best of both. So let’s call it more of a delightful country retreat (without the Kumbaya). With so many 5 star reviews (with which I heartily concur), I have little to add except to mention the most generous breakfast delivered to our room’s garden: a great picnic hamper containing, croissants, brie cheese, biscuits, hot quiches, toast, jams, cereals, fruit salads, fruit juices, yoghurts, mueslis (home made), muffins, Pastel de Nata…and more, and rounded off with hot teas. Absolutely overwhelming! Of course, we couldn’t finish the lot; Abbi, our delightful host suggested that we keep the rest for lunch (which was most of it).
On the second day, we elected to have breakfast at the Stone Kitchen (easily within walking distance of our beautifully appointed room). There they offer a full à la carte menu for all appetites… more of a complimentary breakfast on offer rather than the B in B&B’s usual limited fare.(Stone Kitchen also offers lunch and the occasional pop-up dinner. And they are quite a number of wine estates that offer dinners within easy driving distances.)
In all, a wonderful, tranquil, relaxing three day stay.

We first stayed at Dunstone in 2016 and were looking for a quiet few days in the winelands to relax and were really looking forward to visiting again. This time we booked Guava Cottage as it had a pool and more space. Self check-in is an interesting approach and did feel a little odd but that was our opinion and other guests might be happy with the no human contact arrangements. Guava Cottage looks picture perfect, white-washed walls and wooden windows, with beautiful flowers shading the front veranda. However once inside time appears to have taken it’s toll, furniture and furnishings a little beyond shabby chic, faded, worn, burn marks, broken locks. Cleaning standards appear a little below par and some areas of the cottage are in need of an update, bathrooms are very dated. The cottage sits very near the Stone Kitchen restaurant and the noise levels from the popular children's play area and then an evening party meant the peace and quiet we had hoped for were non-existent. We were unable to contact any member of staff by phone when there was an issue with the hot water and ended up walking around the farm to try and find out how to report a problem. Once the noise levels started to rise again we decided that this wasn’t for us after all so cut our losses and left 3 hours after arriving. Staff did not appear to be at all interested when we checked out and the duty manager was not contactable. What a huge shame that things appear to have changed so much at Dunstone Country House.

Dear Buggsi, thank you for your feedback. We are the new owners from Dunstone since January 6th 2023 and we have duly noted your feedback and will definitely look into all you have stated here. Upon arrival we leave our telephone number with the guests at the self-catering cottage and try to come by to have a chat asap and see if everything is to their liking. We are also sensitive to noise levels and understand your predicament, so we are sorry we only came a few months later. We agree, with loadshedding, there have been some extra challenges there with regard to water as well, and we are in the process of finding longterm solutions. We hope you will come by again perhaps next year, you will find the Bovlei road wil have also gone from dirt to tar. Wishing you all the best Dirk & Natascha

We had stayed a couple of year ago and the quality has remained the same. Very friendly staff in a beautiful setting. The rooms are not very large but well appointed with comfortable beds. A very nice communal area looking at the valley and the vines with a happy hour every night. A peaceful swimming pool with comfortable loungers and shade. The Stone Kitchen produces a very good breakfast (and is a pleasant place for dinner a short walk from the main buildings)

We went to Dunstone and stayed in the Guava Cottage with friends and our 2 labradors. We had a fantastic time. Everyone, including the pot bellied pigs, the goats, the horses and the ridgeback were very hospitable and welcoming to our dogs. The cottage was enclosed, with its own pool and braai area, which included superb views. The cottage was lovely and secluded. All the staff were amazing, and we shall definitely returning in the future.

We love South Africa and return to the places we enjoy staying , one of which is Dunstone. We always choose Dunstone because of the people there both working and it’s guests , most of which like us return again and again
This year was very different. When we arrived there was no one waiting to greet us at reception and no one around . After some considerable time one of the owners arrived and I explained how disappointed we were . It didn’t get any better . There was a distinct atmosphere. The new owners who we appreciate had only just taken over and were possibly finding the new business a challenge didn’t seem to realise that they need to focus on their core business - guests . An example of this is when they invited us to social evening of food and wine, writing a personal note to confirm the day and time which they also posted on social media. We were amazed and annoyed when the time came and went and they didn’t turn up .
This confirmed to us that they treated some guests very differently . They need to work very hard to change their attitude if they are to be successful in the hospitality industry.
It will probably be no surprise to hear we will not be return

Dear Gillian, As your friends Kees & Wilma from Holland also confirmed to us, as the new owners, your ties with the old owners are unfortunately clouding your vision of what really happened. This unfortuntately for worldwide readers, also made your review "slightly biased" towards the reality of the facts : we had taken over Dunstone only a few weeks before your arrival, the atmosphere was created by you yourself and nothing we could suggest or do was sadly sufficient to get into your good books as your mind was set to not enjoying the new experience and the fact that Dunstone is no longer british owned. The social evening, due to personal circumstances out of our own hands, was changed to a later date and by way of apologizing for the delay caused, you received several bottles of excellent wines for free. We were in the hospitality industry our entire lives, working in the wine industry in SA as well as having grown up with a stepfather who owned a 14 room hotel in the centre of Brussels. Your intent, from the very moment we met, was never to actually advise or help with your comment in good intent for our brand new take over to become successfull and we find that very troublesome. We would in this case also rather prefer you would not return, as this is a small business, with a peaceful and loving vibe we are creating and we would not wish for people visiting us who actually have good intentions to be affected by your spirit. Other guests that came after you have confirmed to us personally as well as on Tripadvisor and other social media how they enjoyed their stay including our company and the "aura" as I quote from a guest from San Diego.

We have stayed at Dunstone on several occasions over the years as we have always enjoyed the high quality accommodation overlooking the stunning Bovlei valley. This year we returned not knowing what to expect as the ownership has just changed. To our pleasant surprise Dunstone is now owned by Dirk and Natasha who have years of experience in hospitality and the world of wine.
As soon as we arrived, we were warmly greeted by Natasha and later by Dirk who stopped by to ensure that we had settled in.
Nothing was too much trouble for either of them and we really appreciated the regular supplies of chocolate treats, fresh mangoes from the garden and our friendly chats.
We have no hesitation in recommending Dunstone and we will continue to return.
Thank you Dirk and Natasha!

Dirk was a friendly and engaging host who made sure that we were well looked after. The Lavender Cottage has wonderfully comfortable bedding and is spacious and airy. The windows face a beautiful view of the well-maintained swimming pool and surrounding mountains. There is also a small private garden where the scents of lavender, rosemary and honeysuckle are a treat to the senses. We enjoyed the breakfast and generously sized filter coffee at The Stone Kitchen. Bain's Kloof Pass is a beautiful drive nearby. Definitely will visit again!
