We stayed at Old Thatch Lodge in February 2019 and loved our time there. Having travelled 200km, we were greeted by Karin & her lovely staff who showed us around the grounds of the gorgeous house and to our room. Our room was perfectly clean, very cosy & had all amenities that we required for our stay. Karin was able to recommend local restaurants for our stay & the breakfast we enjoyed, made by Karin and her team, was splendid. Karin has well-mannered dogs, that will give as much or as little attention to you as you encourage. As dog-lovers, we enjoyed spending time with them. Highly recommended for a stay in Swellendam. Thanks Karin!

Great place for a stopover on the garden route. Staff couldn't be more helpful and attentive.Lovely garden and a good nights sleep after a long drive from Cape Town. Highlight was the food - Dinner was great and the breakfast was the best we've had anywhere.

Karin has great taste, it's really as if she has opened up her home in the form of this B&B, it is SO cosy! Rooms are cute and comfortable, the living areas are the same (lovely fireplace), has a braai area, wine with (extensive) breakfast! Loved having use of the kitchen for lunches and dinners, she's thought of everything in there. 3 massive, sweet, gentle dogs (and one small one) keep the place very safe! My husband and another couple booked for one night but stayed for two, my best mate was pregnant and really adored the place for a comfortable rest from travelling.

Stayed 1 night, the property is spotless and well maintained, good WIFI, comfy bed, hot strong shower, restaurant and onward travel advice very solid, attention to detail was impressive. We wanted a quaint old thatched house and this ticked all the boxes. Loved the paths 'paved' in apricot and nectarine stones. The welcome was very warm from human dogs cat and birds, the animals were gorgeous and totally enhance the experience, they were very clean and friendly. Awesome champagne /cooked breakfast. No hesitation in recommending. This is however a rural town and the dawn chorus is impressive (although my husband slept through it)!

This is a charming B&B. We received a lovely welcome form the four massive dogs who were very gentle and friendly. The rooms are very spacious and well thought-out. There are beautiful, quaint mosaics on the walls which are delightful. The breakfast was great and the beds were comfortable. A very central but peaceful location. We had a lovely stay.

We traveled by car from George to Stellenbosch and made a 1-night stop at Old Thatch Lodge to break the journey. This B&B was an excellent choice. The breakfast was amazing: a good selection of fruits, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, toast with tasty marmalade (and jam), fruit juice, tea/coffee and champagne. I liked the little touches i.e. small flowers on the plates and napkins on holders in the shape of African animals. The Landlady (Karin) was helpful and friendly and recommended nearby restaurants for dinner. The 4 of us agreed that it was the best breakfast during our 3 weeks of travel in South Africa.

During our two week holiday going from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth along the Garden Route, my boyfriend and I stayed at Old Thatch Lodge for one night. Location: Located in the centre of Swellendam and directly en route to the Klein Karoo, Old Thatch Lodge is the perfect place to stop. Rooms: It wouldn’t do the place justice to talk about the rooms only. Old Thatch Lodge is a set of buildings with thatched roofs, unique African architecture, and decorated with so much love and attention to detail that you could wander through the property for hours just being amazed by what Karin has created. Our room (room 1) was in the main guest building. Whilst being one of the smaller rooms, it was more than sufficient. Again, so much detail was put into decoration and making our stay a unique African experience. Service: Karin was incredibly helpful telling us a lot about the place, the region and herself. This is how we got to learn about the sauna onsite the property, which she kindly offered to prepare for us. What a unique experience and great way to end an exhausting day of travel! After a great night’s sleep we were welcomed by Karin and her staff for breakfast on the terrace. Anything you could possibly want for breakfast was available (including champagne!). What’s around: There are a couple of restaurants along the main street and within walking distance. We made our way along the mountain pass to the Klein Karoo, which also is a nice day trip if you are in the region a bit longer. On Karin’s recommendation we stopped at Hardy’s souvenir shop (must go, great prices, lovely knowledgeable staff) and Diesel & Crème to try the world’s best milkshake! Summary: Should be the number one place in Swellendam. We couldn’t have asked for a better accommodation, host and experience.

We happened upon this guest house as we were meandering along the Garden Route. A must stay and we had an amazing experience. The owner, Karin, was extremely kind to us and provided helpful advice to help us out as we made our way. While there was a bit of a mix up with our reservation, Karin settled it quickly and provided us great advice on where to eat that evening. Highly recommended with a great breakfast to match the experience. P. Higgins USA
