It's an older establishment and the warm water is taking a while to come through. But apart from that, we were happy and were provided with all we needed.
The location on Voortrek Street is however excellent, as nearly everything is within walking distance.

This is one tired old place!

Everything about the hotel was poor and they only avoided a terrible as a staff member gave us a good tip for a restaurant.

Where do I start....

The property is old, worn and not well laid out. It is not well cared for and things like the pool are very ropey - you couldn't even see the bottom due to the water being so cloudy!

The staff were OK, although they tried to rip our party off by overcharging - they only stuck to their agreed prices as we had printed out the emails. Even then they charged us extra for breakfast which was supposed to be included.

The restaurant looked unhygienic, although despite this the cooked breakfast was fine.

Basically a bit of a dump, although it was OK for a night while passing through. I would certainly not rush back.

in the heat of summer (8th Feb 2018) when it was really hot, I booked 4 rooms for my party of 6 on the condition that the rooms had aircons.
The staff were friendly but embarrassed to be working at such a run down place. Hats of to Marshall, the manager, who worked tirelessly with me to find 4 rooms with working airconditioners, What a great person! It took over an hour going from room to room with broken or non-functional aircon units. The 70's had literally called and taken back their air conditioners. they were noisy, clunky and ineffective.
The room I / we did get did not have security on the windows and had no blockout blinds. The taps took about 4 minutes of constant flow before the water got warm, this in the middle of the biggest drought in Cape history. This shows lack of caring about the situation.
The beds were old, creaky, worn out and uncomfortable.

This must have once been a grand place, but the owners have neglected it to the point that there are other better establishments for similar prices. I would not recommend staying here again.

We booked via LS that give this place 5stars…very far from it and the certificate in reception indicates 2 but I would suggest 1 based on only the fact that they were open. No proper COVID protocol, no-one in reception to check casuals walking in or to welcome guests. Place really needs serious maintenance. Several dodgy characters harassing you at the entrance to the hotel. Dont be fooled by some of these other reviews, clearly fabricated. Rather find alternatives in Swellendam there are several at much cheaper rates.

Horrible is all I can say. We had to get other accommodation because of the state the hotel was in. There is no secure parking. Place is just horrible.
There are much nicer accommodation for cheaper price and includes breakfast. Like Aan de Eike. Please dont book here.

If this place was advertised as a motel, it would be fine. With few expectations it cannot dissapoint. However, the websites suggest it is so much more. On paper it looks good: pool, braii etc but this place is one big lost opportunity.
It needs a big overhaul. Unless worn out 70's decor comes back in fashion, the rooms will continue to be tacky and soulless. They are titled deluxe but are in need of a few coats of dulux. The staff seemed resigned to the fact that they were part of a substanndard organisation and had lost the will to live. An entertaining but illustrative example was when my wife and I arrived to check in. A member of staff came to show us the room. As my wife struggled with her backpack, he kindly offered to carry her handbag to make it easier! Having been used to excellent friendly service everywhere else we went in SA, this place failed to deliver.
I have written reviews on Tripadvisor for 5 years now and sometimes, if I read a review like this one, can be tempted to take it with a pinch of salt and decide for myself. Beware. This place really IS crap. If you want a cheap motel, then go for it, but you arelikely to have a better nights stay in one of the many B+Bs available in the area.

My biggest mistake on the 10 th July 2015 was to stay at this Hotel instead of sleeping in my car! It was the worst night I have ever spent in a Hotel! The room was located next to a busy street! There were cars accelerating, hooting, doors slamming, people shouting, lights flashing most of the night and people passing by who could be plainly seen! The bedding stank of previous occupants! I did n't sleep a wink! The bedding was very thin on a freezing cold night! On the positive side the staff were very pleasant! I was very pleased to jump in my car at 6 the next morning! What a dump!

I'm not sure what's going with the negative reviews. Perhaps there have been updates since then. But I think this hotel is very nice. They saved us at midnight from a horribly spider-infested guesthouse. The rooms are clean, spacious and delightfully spider-free. The desk staff were both very nice, helpful and accommodating. The hotel is a bit outdated in terms of decor but..... who cares? There is a cute pool, indoor jacuzz, aircon in the rooms and the property is well maintained.

The hotel was established in 1915 and is still in business, what an achievement. The current owners have been there since 1975 and still loving their hotel, guests and friends. Real value for money, and the wealth of information shared to make your visit in Swellendam memorable.
I loved the tranquility and peacefulness the hotel oozes and the pretty gardens, so well cared for.
Plan a stay over or a business trip or a conference.. the Beekeepers Conference is there 8-11 Aug 2013...I recommend this lovely elegant hotel to everyone. I shall be back.
