This is a 5 star boutique hotel and the hotel rooms are spacious, with free WIFI, large designer bathrooms, in our case with a water bed and climate control. The hotel offers high teas, breakfast, lunches and evening dinners served in Restaurant 18 Zero One, a large pool with breathtaking views. There is a Spa for beauty and massage treatments. This is an oasis of tranquility on superb quiet large grounds, walking distance from the heart of village.

We stayed in he "Shiraz suite", a two story affair with a waterbed on one floor and a more normal king-sized bed on the upper floor. The huge tub comes with a candle driven aromatherapy lamp and bath salts. The decoration is “African Traditional” with a thatched roof with Benin bronzes and carved masks for accents. When wee returned from dinner, we found that the turn-down service included filling the room’s Jacuzzi with hot water and lighting candles heating aromatic oils around the tub,

The food was imaginative and tasty in the restaurant and the staff universally wonderful. We just wish we could have stayed longer

Situated close to the centre of Swellendam this hotel is a delightful quiet retreat where one can totally relax. The room we had, Merlot, was particularly comfortable with excellent facilities. In the main building there is a spacious lounge in which to enjoy a pre-dinner drink or a post-dinner digestive. The restaurant has tables set reasonably apart and the serice and food of a very high stanard. The staff are welcoming and eager to help with arranging tables at nearby restaurants, of which there are a good number, and also trips to surrounding attractions.

This is a wonderful place to stay. Pure peaceful luxury...
Lovely clean large rooms and bathrooms. The grounds and pool are well kept, great facilities.
Swellendam itself is an historic town which is really safe and close to explore on foot with shops, museums and afternoon tea overlooking the River.
The Lodge and has retained its history and is beautifully decorated with the owners collection of art from around the world. There is a comfortable bar area where you can meet the other guests if you wish. A vast selection of gins and wine are available.
The restaurant is beautiful and the tables well placed for privacy. The food is all from local produce and is amazing, some of the best we had on our trip
The staff are really helpful and friendly especially Nanette.
Thank you all so much for making our visit so memorable... We will definitely be back!

A throughly disappointing stay at De Kloof 'Luxury' Boutique Estate on our honeymoon trip across The Garden Route.

Having been blessed with fantastic accommodation and hospitality for the first 7 days of our trip we arrived at De Kloof with high hopes of another enjoyable couple of days in luxury surroundings.

We couldn't have been more wrong. After a 3 hour drive, the owner of the property seemed more concerned with the seminar in the property than anything else from the moment of check in.

In our 3 precious locations the owners of each property made some small gesture to acknowledge the occasion of our honeymoon, we certainly did not experience that in De Kloof.

The luxury 5 Star accommodation they boast of consisted of 2 single beds pushed together with single duvets. Hardly luxury and honeymoon worthy.

Though the website states that pool snacks are available, when asked the owner said there was no food available to guests as the seminar attendees had enjoyed them at lunch time.

Our dinner was booked for us in local restaurants with no consultation on whether we actually wished to dine in these places.

The bed linen was stained, the walls covered in streaky paint and the DSTV had about 3 channels.

We didn't get breakfast as we didn't want to spend any more time in the main building than we needed to.

In our efforts to check out and leave the property early doors to avoid staying any longer than we needed to the bill was settled only to discover after that we'd been charged for two Double Gin and Tonics which we never ordered. And it seems we've not been the only ones to suffer this fate.

Unfortunately, thinking our dealings were done with the property, we noticed a hat had been left behind and had no option but to email and request it be posted to us in our next hotel. We were told that was no issue but would be done so on a cash on delivery basis. I'd have assumed a 5 star hotel could cover the cost of posting a baseball cap a few hundred miles, particularly after overcharging their guests but apparently not.

Whatever luxury this property once exuded is long gone and the only pleasant experience was the attentive wait staff and the porter, which just about give it two stars.

We value each guest comments in order to strive for highest performance. Its of great importance for us and readers BUT when justified and fair. Guests -who were booked by a travel agent- arrived quite early more than 1.5 hrs before official check in time but were welcomed to seat in lounge with welcome drink. Guests got choice to go into town or to wait for their room . After 10 min guests were escorted and offered 2 different rooms to choose from whereunder one suite ( which was an upgrade but was declined) and took the smaller room chosen which they liked and found very cosy ! Its not strange that guests who arrive way before official check in time can not just eat from a lunch buffet in separate area which is paid and booked for by a another company !. Due to fact of high season and therefor limited space in limited nr of restaurants in the village we learnt to do good to have some provisional dinner table reservations for guests on file as a kind gesture to avoid people ending up empty handed or disappointed to be left out on a table . Guests can make use of such offer or not and can also find their own way. Guest room has been closed off for two days with curtains closed both mornings breakfast was not taken. Only time we saw guest was for 1 hour at pool where 7 Gin and 2 beers were consumed in short time frame.. Guests do sign for their drinks to avoid such wrongful accusations. This correct drink bill was paid upon his rush checkout and nothing even mentioned, said nor ventilated. Hotel did get however twice complaints from next door guests about the noises coming out of this guest room in afternoon . Guests were not seen and not heard off during their entire stay did not have any breakfast on any day . Breakfast is served on the lovely verandah of manor house under the oak tree with owls . Champagne is especially served for honeymooners during breakfast. In room DSTV has full hotel package available and with fast fibre high internet speed guests can also stream from own devices. Due to covid our inhouse fine dining restaurant is not operational any longer for lunch nor dinner which is clearly mentioned on our site. Restaurants for lunch and dinner are within short walk from estate . Full bar service on offer throughout day/early evening as well in-room bar can be stocked as advertised. Due to fact we have water issues in town we recently experienced brown water and seems some linen has been stained unfortunately. We do apologies if this has been the case and in meantime have checked removed from stock. In respect of lost and found items we are pleased to assist to pack and send with courier but its imaginable -when 1 out of 3 people forget items -hotel can simply not be liable to pay for such costs to send parcels all over the world on hotels account. That has nothing to do with any missing luxury or stars. We take this up with travel agent and file complaint about unjustified comments left behind .

We stayed for one night this week, I have to say we will be back again it’s lovely.

The property is very small with only 8 rooms all of which seem to be unique being part of the old buildings, ours had a thatched roof and was in the attic - very modern “boutiquey” inside but private and secluded with a little balcony.

The grounds we’re impeccably kept a guy was even painting the walls when we where there, the staff were super friendly it felt like a family had welcomed us to stay.

We had massages from their resident masseuse which were great, he has a lot of experience and a great personality.

They organised dinner at a local place and a shuttle (2 minutes drive) back which saved us walking back up the hill.

The best bit though was breakfast it has to be in the top three I’ve had in a hotel anywhere in the world - I won’t spoil the surprise for you but just enjoy

We paid £120 for the night and the massages were about £35 per person - bargain!

De historical well decorated buildings, lush gardens, swimming pool, spa and the 5-star service make you feel utterly welcome. WiFi is perfect, there is private parking and your car is washed before you leave. Service with a smile, nothing seems to be impossible. Wine on the terrace, linger longer at the pool, a relaxing massage, here it's a true treat and a holiday you feel you deserved after all the corona lockdowns and limitations. I'm sure I will be back.

We arrived this evening to celebrates my wife's birthday at this five star luxury Estate, only to discover no one was at the hotel. After many phone calls, we eventually got hold of the owner who said they are closed, I booked this accommodation on Booking.com on the 15th of October. I have confirmation of my booking and i received reminders this week for our booking. The owner could not have been less interested and said we must take up the issue with Booking.com. We are now left at tis very late stage with no accommodation after a 4 hour drive to get here. The accomodation is very epensive and

Stayed for five nights in Rose room at De Kloof. Room was very comfortable and spacious. Grounds at the hotel are stunning as is the main building which has a lovely dining room for breakfast. The pool area affords fantastic views of the mountains. Every member of staff that I encountered were very friendly and professional. The owner of the owner, Marjolein, was extremely helpful in recommending restaurants to visit and she also arranged transport with an excellent driver (who I used for other trips in and around Swellendam). A very relaxing and enjoyable stay in Swellendam.

An understated haven of peace and tranquility. We and our US guests each had a large and well appointed suite in the garden, each with its own patio. Breakfast was served outside on the patio of the main house and was just perfect; a wide choice and everything beautifully prepared and presented. The staff friendly and always helpful.
