We felt extremely comfortable in the Marula Lodge. It started with the large, well-kept and beautiful garden with a variety of plants and trees, a pool that invites you to swim, and the comfortable seating and breakfast areas on the veranda in front of the main house, which also invites you to linger.
The very good breakfast consisted of a rich buffet (coffee, tea, fruit, fruit juices, cereal, good bread, cheese, sausage, ...) and the warm components, e.g. egg dishes, which could be ordered on request and by arrangement.
Our room was large and equipped as requested. The beds were comfortable and it was very quiet in the complex. Everything in the room and in the entire complex was very clean. The small seating area in front of the room with a view of the garden and pool was also nice. The location of the Marula Lodge in Swellendam is very good. All important points of contact are within walking distance and the immediate neighborhood makes a very well-kept impression.
We were also impressed by the large solar system on the roof for using solar energy.
The extremely positive atmosphere, which begins with the extremely friendly welcome, is shaped by the "host" and owner, Walter, who is very friendly and very communicative - either in German or English. Walter not only gives excellent recommendations for very good restaurants in Swellendam, and will also make a reservation if requested, but also has a huge wealth of his own travel experience, which he is very happy to pass on. His tips and recommendations are very informative and helpful.
We would be happy to stay at the Marula Lodge again on a trip to Swellendam and can only warmly recommend it.

Convenient located on Main Street in Swellendam, though anything but loud! Great host with good information and supportive as well as advising. Personal but not tonlosere one can feel at home and enjoy the convenience of being well taken care of in a very well taken care of location. It‘s obvious that the owner wants her guests to feel comfortable!

The room was clean and was perfect for a short or longer term stay. Not a full DSTV bouquet so just relaxing in the room and watching tv is limited. Swimming pool right on your doorstep can be a pro or a con. For a one night stay over it was perfect and had everything we needed. No air conditioning in our room, so ask for a room with air conditioning if you want it.

We have often stopped at the Marula Lodge on our road trip in South Africa and this time it was very nice. The Marula Lodge is centrally located in Swellendam, within walking distance of restaurants, a beautiful garden with a saltwater pool invites you to relax, the breakfast is good and plentiful and the rooms are nice and clean. Walter, the owner, is always there to help and advise - we didn't lack anything. As always, everything was perfect

Very hard, small bed. Room was very warm, could only open 2 small windows . there is a ventilator but hot air will not get cold with this. We had a terrible night. The host is very much "there" ! Too loud, talkes too much. If you like a host like that he is the best. We thought it was very annoying. You have to carry the suitcase to the room .... terrible rocks so you can not stroll them. The host is too busy talking.... not helping. The property was nice, with a pool and nice seats.

Will recommend Marula Lodge to any one looking for an excellent place to sleep over or spend a few days. We slept over one night on route from cape town to mossel bay. The family room is perfect for a small family of four. Service was excellent.

Great stay, breakfast and very clean. Room was not very big, but during summer is it perfect because you have an outdoor table with chairs. location is fine, good restaurants naar by. Our host is available for questions , and clean extra towels by the swimmingpool!

We stayed at the Marula Lodge a few years ago and were delighted again this time. The lodge has a beautiful garden, the rooms are clean, the staff are always friendly and the breakfast is delicious, especially the freshly cut fruit salad. The owner Walter gave us some very good tips and knows the area very well.
The location of the accommodation is great, many excursions can be made from Swellendam (e.g. Bontebok, de Hoop, wine-growing regions including tastings). Swellendam itself is not so touristy, which I personally think is very good. We can also highly recommend the restaurant next door. We will book the Marula Lodge again on our next trip!

We already stayed here some years ago, when the lodge's pre-owner Marion and Phil owned this house, so we were exiceted whether the charme and the standard will be the same.
Fortunately nearly anything has changed; Marula Lodge and its host Walter May (an original German guy born in Kiel) is a perfect host and he will take of all your wishes and more.
The beautiful decorated 7 rooms around the backyard-pool in the garden really let you relax from all the stress of your trip. This guesthouse is a perfect rest for a couple of days and also central base for your sightseeing-trips beside the busy regions. You can easily join a wine-tasting in nearby Robertson valley, visit Cape Algulhas with the most southern point of Africa and many more.
