Halfway between Cape Town and the Garden Route it is ideally situated to hike or horse ride through indigenous forests or wander through the picturesque village. Beneath the most spectacular peaks of the Langeberg Mountains Swellendam is the 3rd oldest magisterial district in South Africa with plenty of inspiring and peaceful experiences. Sit around our welcome fire under starry skies and enjoy the countryside.

I came here with my mom (she's 50 and I am 23) and it was the first stop of our road trip. Very disappointed about many things, the main one was the unwelcoming vibe (felt like we were just strangers in someone else's house and we we just not liked, even though I expressed my huge interest in horse riding with her). Next morning I was all dressed and ready (and even though I had a headache because I barely slept because of the noisy guinea fowls calling ALL night long) to go horse riding and 5 minutes before the meeting time with her, she knocks on my door to tell me that she has a headache and we won't be riding. Excuse me?! 5 minutes before?! Very rude and selfish. By the way, she also has "antique" chairs (heavy wooden chairs) in the lounge and you're not allowed to sit on the armchair (i weight 45 kg) or else they will break. And just to make the matters worse, she will have the audacity to call you out "dear... you'll have to pay for it". If it was a backpackers there wouldn't be an antique chair in the lounge that is fragile... And forget Bacon and Egg in the morning, as you'll not be allowed to cook fatty meals... another useless rule in a backpackers. Nice rooms, but the bathrooms are horrible. Drainage is non existent for the hand washing. And just for the sake of it, just so you know... she gets very jealous when her 2 dogs approach anybody else than her. Don't try this tactic.... although they are very cute. Oh! And smoking is only allowed like 15 m away from the deck, basically on the chickens pen. There you will be able to smoke.....

What a miserable experience in all respects ! Made to feel very unwelcome . This is not a reflection of true Backpacker travel and tradition . Too many insulting signs all over on the do's and don'ts !! Please invest in some equipment for your guests to prepare their meals as this is what happens in a real Backpackers !

Comfortable, clean rooms. Lacks that welcoming backpacking atmosphere. Too many rules makes one feel like a child in someone else's home. Kitchen is available but one is not allowed to cook fatty meat!? So forget about your bacon and eggs. Kitchen equipment could do with an upgrade. When we inquired, we were made to feel that the wifi not reaching our room was somehow our fault!?

The venue itself is beautiful and the rooms are lovely, but the woman who received us was unfriendly and rude. It advertises a bar and lounge but this area has been marked off as a family room and all guests are banned. We got a horrible scalding from the rude woman for walking through it, they make the guests pass through via an alley out the kitchen to ensure their space is not invaded. There was no one to receive our key so I had to leave it on a block and run through the gate before it closed on me. By the time we finished eating and wanted to pack up and wash our things they had locked the kitchen. They treated us like children. Not to mention the husband was welding until 8 oclock which was noisy. This venue would work with new owners.

We stayed for 3 nights and loved it! Stephanie and Kirk who run the place are brilliant; so helpful and friendly, highly recommend staying here. The rooms are comfortable and the bathroom fittings are really cool. The whole setting is great, the big garden is peaceful and plenty of places to relax. Swellendam is a really nice place, very quite town and a beautiful setting with the mountain backdrop. We didn't do much while we were there other than go to the local gym which was great and the locals made us feel most welcome.

The owner is exceptionally unfriendly and unhelpful, it ruined the whole feeling of our stay. Addtionally, although room and facilities clean and nice - this place is NOT a backpackers. The atmosphere is stiff and formal and one gets issued with 'rules' upon arrival in a patronising and rude tone. I would not recommend this place to anyone, whether they're looking for a backpackers or otherwise.

I have been travelling all over SA for where is and this is joint 1st accommodation. No idea what others were thinking with negative reviews? Beautiful location, spotlessly clean and well run, unlike some I have stayed at. Swellendam is a delightful town with 2 great pubs. Highly recommended.

Wasn't a good experience. Owner not friendly at all. Cooking utensils dramatic. The non-stick coating in the pans were loose, if you would use those pans you will probably eat burned coating. You're not allowed to fry meat in the pans. With other words, I would NOT recommend this one.

We arrived here on Saturday November 5th around 9pm. Upon arrival The owners were not very welcoming or friendly. It felt like they were just doing it for the money. The price for a double bedroom was considerably high too: around R550, excl breakfast. At 09.50 PM we were told to leave the common room because they wanted to close down. We found this a bit rude or at least not very customer friendly. The rooms were basic and the two towels were not Clean (stains on them). When we wanted to check out the other morning there was nobody there. All in All, the experience was very disappointing. I there advise fellow travellers not to stay here. I am sure you can find much better accommodation for comparable or even more competitive rates. Regards, Jeroen
