Detailed Reviews
Newly renovated (in most areas) and cozy enough, however its clear the staff and owners are a bit out of practice after the 2 year lockdowns. The AC in our room was broken and after 3 requests to have it seen to we just gave up. The staff was generally friendly enough however were not given correct information about included or excluded costs. Room cleanups happened sporadically and at one time we were left without towels after a cleanup. Having to beg for milk refills for the tea or coffee station should not not even be an issue in a 4star. Hope they get better. EXCELLENT location for visiting very high quality wine estates nearby. The Strand and Gordon's Bay beaches are close and afford amazing views. Avoid Somerset West beach side due to vagrants. Included breakfast is excellent. Excluded dinner is quite expensive for what is served.

Hotel was lovely but missing basics like robe and slippers in room and iron and ironing board . The iron and board were sent to room once requested from reception . Breakfasts and lunch were very good , good choice and freshly made. The staff make this hotel , they were super friendly , professional and polite at all times . All very eager to please . A special applause should go to Galzeilda who served us breakfast every morning . She was an absolute joy to meet in the morning . It was amazing to watch her warmth and friendly personality as she interacted with everyone. She also has an incredible voice as she sang happy birthday to one guest . A true star and precious jewel on the staff

We booked into Lord Charles Hotel on New Years Eve literally at the 11th hour due to an emergency. We usually book into one if the well known Cape Town City centre when visiting the Town however, given the time of year , most quality hotels were booked out . We arrived at Lord Charles just in time to check in and we were immediately taken back by not only the decor and setting of the hotel , but the incredibly warm and efficient greeting received from the staff manning reception. We were allocated an absolutely beautiful, spacious and spotless room with what can only be described as a magnificent view. The room was exactly what we needed. I’m summary, the entire experience was world class given the hotel building and grounds supported by a hugely motivated team.

We had two booked one night stays via a hotel booking company in early 2023 then 5 months after the confirmation that out of hand cancelled them both saying they were over-booked. Since any over booking had happened after our two confirmations I contacted the hotel to do told in both cases it was an IT problem.
Frankly unacceptable behaviour – confirmed booking should be honoured and not cancelled for more recent bookings. I hope we were not cancelled in favour of a direct booking that would earn them more money!

Dear Jez A, it is with sincere regret and humble apologies that this was indeed due to a system error. This was completely out of the hotels control. Our dedicated team found alternative and suitable accommodation on your behalf and we are certain your stay experience will meet your expectations when in the area. We do hope to welcome you to the iconic Lord Charles Hotel though during your next visit to the Helderberg and winelands region.

My Mother booked her 80th birthday lunch on the 1st of December for 10 people at the indoor restaurant at the Lord Charles Hotel. We arrived to find our booking was now at 18h30 in the evening. We were also told that the tables in the indoor restaurant were not allowed to be moved together and we would have to sit at separate tables. We cobbled a table together outside but it absolutely ruined Mom's special birthday. Dad, ever punctilious, brought his proof of reservation at 12h30 and countered the suggestion we were the ones who got the booking wrong. It beggars belief - how can one take a booking and not inform the booker that her guests would all be at separate tables (clearly we would have changed bookings). We are never coming back.

Dear JohnlB180KW, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. Please accept our sincere apologies for the disappointment and inconvenience caused during your mother’s special 80th birthday lunch. We deeply regret the confusion with the booking details and the seating arrangements. This is certainly not the level of service or experience we strive to provide at the Lord Charles Hotel, especially on such a significant occasion. Your feedback highlights areas where we need to improve, and we will address this matter with our team to ensure better communication and planning in the future. We understand how important this celebration was, and it is truly disheartening to know that we fell short. We would appreciate the opportunity to make amends and discuss this matter further. Please feel free to reach out to us directly at info@lordcharleshotel.com so we can personally address your concerns. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, and we hope to have the chance to regain your trust in the future.

We decided to go to the Lord Charles to watch the funeral of the Queen as we had load shedding. I phoned the day before and was told it would be on in the bar.
We arrived and went to the bar this was about 11.15. No one in the bar or at the bar so after a few minutes I went into the lobby and asked if anyone was serving in the bar. The porter or lobby person said yes he will find someone. A lady then came who was dressed more like a kitchen person. With a mask more half on only covering part of her mouth and her speech not clear. My wife asked for a gin cocktail that was displayed on the table but she replied she cannot make them. So we settled on a gin and tonic . I asked for a draught beer but none were available. I settled on a bottled beer . We were not offered any food or menu. No management visited the bar during our time or greeted us. Our bill eventually was placed on the table without being asked if we wanted more. Overall poor standards and service. Banging kitchen doors etc. Would not go back . Thought it would be a good place to go.

Dear Ernie J, humble apologies that it has taken a few days to respond to your review but the incident on the day in question was under investigation. It is truly disappointing that there was a lapse of service in the St Andrews Pub. Since opening in February 2022, we have worked passionately curating exceptional sequences of services and experiences and in this unfortunate case we failed to deliver. The matter has been seriously taken and may we assure you corrective action has taken place to avoid any such occurrences. May we too take the opportunity of thanking you for bringing the incident to our attention. We certainly hope you will give our hotel another opportunity of taking care of you during your next visit to the beautiful Helderberg region.

So good to see the hotel back open. A lot of money has clearly been spent and the refurbishment has really modernised the whole place from upgraded air con and in-room entertainment, through to the vibrant new, plant print decor.
The new dining menu is great, I’m yet to try the wine tasting private dining room but I’m sure I’ll get an opportunity to do so.
The location is fantastic, but the hotel’s biggest asset is the team. It’s great to see so many of the team return after the closure - the welcome and service at the hotel is fantastic and puts many of the central Cape Town, luxury hotels in the shade.

I had an absolutely wonderful stay at this historic hotel. The stunning grounds and beautifully maintained property were a treat to explore. The restaurant's food was absolutely delicious and every dish was bursting with flavor. What really made my stay memorable was the staff - they were incredibly friendly and helpful throughout my entire stay. I was impressed with the level of service and attention to detail. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The new ownership has done an amazing job and I give this hotel a 5/5 for an all-round pleasurable experience. Carreen

My wife and I are long time customers The Lord Charles and were disappointed when it closed.
Well it is now reopened and it is probably better than it was. Newly refurbished and generally freshened up. Gardens and grounds are very well maintained and they have even cleared out the overgrown pond. We stayed for 2 weeks and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves once again.
The restaurant was excellent, the staff superb and helpful and breakfast outstanding
We are going back in November 2022 and probably February 2023.
Thoroughly recommended - quiet, good atmosphere and superb base for getting out and about in the area

This is a shout out for an exceptional employee, Phila Njemla. In May I attended a mother's day function at the Lord Charles. I paid my account using a credit card, it was 2 days later when I realised my card was missing. Checking my records I realised the last place it had been used was the LC hotel. I phoned their reception and was assured they would ask their various departments whether my card had been found and come back to me. The assurances came to nothing, I was not contacted by the person taking my call. Ever hopeful I phoned the LC again. This time I hit gold, Phila! She not only located my card but phoned me back and arranged for me to collect from reception when she wasn't on shift. It's not often that someone goes the extra mile but Phila was prepared to do so. The management at the LC hotel need to know they have a gem amongst there staff. Thanks again Phila.
