It is expensive to stay here but when you arrive you get lots of special surprises that make you feel so special! The farm is vast, huge damn to swim in in summer, lots of farm animals and fresh vegetables to pick and make your own delicious meals. It is quite a drive from town so we stayed in the cottage and enjoyed the farm rather than trying to drive into town for any meals. A little piece of paradise.

My family and I stayed in one of the houses/cottages on the farm- in the newly renovated Opstaal house that is over 100 years old.

It is hard to imagine that in such a stunningly remote location and for such a good price, you can enjoy such luxury but Vrisch Gewagt got it more than right... and when I say luxury - I mean everything at your fingertips - gorgeous room décor, marble counter tops, every kitchen utensil you could imagine, SMEG fridges, Nespresso machines, self-standing baths to name a few! We were able to view the Main House and other cottages as well before new guests arrived and the standard is consistently top quality.

Then the best part, of course, is the outstanding setting - located on a 1600 hectre farm, we could take endless walks along the open paths and through the trees looking up at the vast Swartberg mountains or across the 16000 olive trees (!) split into sections over the expanse.

We explored the many dams, rivers and orchards dotted around and got to bask in the sun at the pools at Opstaal and the one overlooking this magical place. We were told it is one of the rare farms in the middle of the Karoo desert that has a constant stream of water - just another thing adding to how unique this place is. The silence, only disturbed by soothing nature, is something special to escape to. There really is nothing like it.

Chantal is just the best and catered to our every need and more. Upon request, she took the time to show us the olive presses - explaining the harvest process and different types of olive, and showed us the various animals at feeding time - Wendy the cow and her adorable son Max, the pigs, goats, sheep (we even got to feed the 2 tame ones). She delivered fresh milk when we asked and we were given the delicious farm-produced olive oil and olives - we just had to buy more to take home. Her and Stefan's passion for the farm is infectious.

Though the silence and remoteness is what we were after, we decided to venture out for a morning. The quaint town of Prince Albert is just a short 30min drive away where the locals welcomed us with open arms and we discovered the artsy soul of the place.

On a personal note, I have experienced nothing comparable to this stay to rejuvenate and refocus the mind and spirit. There is nothing like listening to the birds and insects coming alive at sunrise and the crackling fire under a spectacular sunset to soothe the soul. I can't wait to go back during olive harvest season!

Our cottage at Vrisch Gewagt was so well set out and the cottages are all so beautifully appointed amidst the spectacular Karoo landscape. Our host, Chantelle couldn't have been more accommodating. I would highly recommend it.

If you enjoy peace and quiet, luxurious accommodation and the opportunity to relax and star gaze in an unspoilt environment, then this is the place to go. A truly "Out of Africa" experience. More than a 5 Star experience.

Amazing family time, stunning house, a luxurious home with views of forever! Kids, fires, books, stories, walks, waterfalls, Karoo lamb and most importantly a setting and space to get lost in! Staff seriously good, perfect attention to detail

We found the room particularly the bedroom to be very small and the bed cramped in the corner. The lounge had a very uncomfortable sitting arrangement but otherwise the farm was beautiful and so peaceful.

Response from laravg2016, Manager at Country House Vrisch Gewagt
Responded 14 Jan 2020
Dear Ann, Thank you for the review. You chose Artist cottage which is one of our smallest (approximately 50sq/m) cottages, the cottage is also the most affordable for our budget conscious guests. It is also our most authentic cottage which is a restored workers quarters dated from the 1900’s. Traveling with 2 dogs, I would suggest that next time you perhaps take Hannes or Cooks cottage to offer you a lot more space. I wish that you would have expressed your unhappiness open arrival as we would have gladly upgraded you to Hannes cottage at no extra cost. We always endeavor to make our guests feel happy and comfortable. If ever you visit us again, I would be happy to offer you Hannes cottage for Artist cottage rates (a free upgrade) to make up for your recent experience. Kind regards Lara

This is a unique experience, that is authentically Karoo. Vrischgewagt provides an appealingly simple style and comfort to reconnect with yourself and your surroundings. It is special with exceptional service. My only regret is not staying longer.

Loved everything about this farm and really couldn't fault anything. The rooms are beautifully decorated. The best and most beautiful place to get away from the hussle. Wished we could've stayed longer.
