We were greated with warmth and hospitality, which lasted throughout our stay.

The cottages are equisite and the views of the natural landscapes are breathtaking!

It is beautifully tranquil and a perfect getaway for those looking for privacy, nature and peace!

I absolutely loved my experience there - looking forward to my return to this Karoo paradise!

We found our paradise in the middle of the Karoo. WOW WOW WOW .... What an amazing place. If you are looking to leave life behind you, you need to go to this farm.
The architecture and the finishes were not spared AT ALL, & it doesn't end there. The hospitality of Chantelle and staff was really incredible. Nothing was too much for them. The little gestures came so naturally that it really was sooo wonderful to be spoilt. We asked for some veggies (you can pick as much as you want or they will do it for you, from their "veggie patch") Chantelle displayed the veggies in such away we could have eaten them off the plate ... raw !!!
She even made us a homemade garlic infused goats cheese. We landed up eating the entire cheese in one night!!!
The tranquility of this place was pure bliss. We walked for hours through the farm and each turn was just mouth dropping gorgeous.
We stayed at Cooks cottage but Chantelle was kind enough to show us all the other Cottages and to be honest, i would like to try each one. A lot of thought went into each cottage, with exquisite taste and very cleverly designed.
This place can be just for you and your partner as a romantic getaway but i would definitely go with my kids. I know my kids would have LOVED to be with us. There is so much to do with your kids - fishing, swimming in the dams, playing with the farm animals. If you want to show your kids what life should be about instead of tv, ipads etc - you must take them.
We came across 2 HUGE tortoises, - it was amazing to see. There was so many other farm animals including piglets - ADORABLE .... I will be posting my pics - watch this space ...

True hospitality, worth every cent and let me not forget to mention the olive oil...it is DIVINE .... we were there for the first harvest of the season, for the olive oil. Which was an incredible experience on its own...Chantelle and her husband didn't mind us hanging around while they started the machines up etc and in fact still had the time to teach us about the making, the uses etc. I have a new respect for Olive Oil and wont use anything else now. (I order every month from Lara the travel agent i booked this place with, she will sell to you directly - including an amazing olive oil and lavender scrub that is made on the farm - they give you a jar as a gift - i have gone through so many jars and buy as gifts for friends).
P.S I have traveled all my life and to be honest this is one of the most beautiful places i have stayed at... we definitely will be staying there again ... and again....and again.

Spoilt!! That is how we felt when we spend a romantic longweekend on Vrisch Gewagt farm. The cottage (Hannes), was pretty, cosy (..read fireplace in bedroom..on a Winter weekend), very clean and surrounded by Karoo vegetation visible from all windows, (of which there were many and which added to the openness, of the cottage...and of soul). We wandered aimlessly for long distances on gravel roads (free reign), and rested next to the farm dams on well build jetties, ideal for picnics and those personal conversations that are sometimes neglected in the hurly burly of everyday life but oh so necessary. The privacy was a luxury in itself. The personal attention and arrangements by Lara (booking ect) and Chantal (on the farm itself), made a superb weekend possible with even small requests accommodated with an always visible smile. If it is relaxation you need or the need to re-kindle intimacy with a loved one..look no further.

We stayed in Cook's Cottage for 5 nights -and could have stayed longer! The peace and quiet of the area was wonderful. The vistas of olive trees, mountains and veld added to the wonderful restorative qualities of the Karoo.
The cottage was beautiful. However, better cooking utensils would have been nice to have.
The home grown produce was really worth it! We left with enough olives in bottles to last us a very long time!

Our second visit to this beautiful farm. 30kms outside Prince Albert gives it a perfect location. The cottages are beautifully and comfortably decorated. Your farm stay is assisted by Chantelle who is extremely accommodating. We got a flat tyre during our stay and she went out of her way to assist us. We are well travelled and I highly recommend this farm for a few days of relaxation and eating under the stars whilst sipping on a glass of good South African wine.

I booked a cottage at Vrisch Gewagt and was really excited about visiting. I had paid in full in advance for my stay via their website. I received booking confirmation saying that payment in full had been taken.

The morning of the booking the owners contacted me by email to tell me they were refusing to honour my reservation as it had been made within 24 hours of arrival. They did not respond to my messages and hung up on me when I phoned.

Why did their website allow me to make a booking the night before if they do not accept bookings within 24 hours of arrival? How can you let guests make bookings and then refuse to honour them and then not even have the manners to answer then phone when the guest phones to discuss?

I became very worried that this was a scam or a fraud so after trying to contact them for several hours and them just hanging up on me I spent another hour on the phone to Amex who told me that whilst the property had not debited my card they were in possession of all my card details and as I had made the booking the property could take a payment at any time and if they did I would have to initiate a dispute with them via amex and go through a lengthy and complex process to recover my money.

I contacted the owners of the property again and asked them to cancel my booking and provide proof that they had done so. They refused and became abusive and threatening. This horrific experience is the worst I have had at any hotel in the world and it totally ruined my trip to SA. The day I should have spent enjoying Prince Albert was spent making phone calls and trying to find an alternative place to stay.

I now have to monitor my amex account to ensure that they do not take this payment. My advice would be to avoid staying at this highly unprofessional place where customer service is non existent. Not only did they ruin my travel plans, cause me to waste hours of my valuable holiday on the phone to Amex but I am now very worried about the security of my credit card details given the high levels of fraud in South Africa.

My advice would be not to risk your precious holiday time with these highly unprofessional people.

Response from laravg2016, General Manager at Country House Vrisch Gewagt

WORST POSSIBLE GUEST AVOIDED... Firstly I would like to say that I am really happy that Mark has given this review a second attempt. (The first attempt was taken off Trip Advisor as the review was made up of lies and Mark could not verify his false accusations) The reason why I am happy is that this time I get to tell my version (the truth) of what transpired as shocking as it may seem. THE TRUTH: Mark made a request for a booking on our website at 22:35 for the following day arrival. I replied to his email at 00:05 saying that unfortunately we would not be able to honour his booking as we required 24hours notice (we are in the country 35km from the nearest town and we require 24hours to prepare to ensure that a paying guest has the beautiful experience that we proud ourselves on) I also stated that should he be able to move his reservation one day forward, I would be happy to honour the reservation on the later date. I also sent a WhatsApp at 06:35 the following day (day that Mark has requested to check-in) so as to be sure that he received the message and had enough time to make alternative arrangements. I had not looked at my phone for roughly 30min around 08:30an and when I looked at it again, I was shocked to see that Mark had attempted to call me 15times in the space of 10min with messages blurting accusations in between. Saying it’s totally unacceptable and that he had paid me in full etc. I replied to Mark in writing in order to keep a record, that he should not be concerned and that his credit card had NOT been debited. He insisted that I could not cancel his booking. I explained that we could not assist at such short notice and apologized for the inconvenience. He then decided to say in writing to which i still have a copy of: “F.CK you, you F..CK.NG C.NT” and that “ if your farm was the last place on this earth I would not go to it” I was totally shocked by his overreaction and told him he was NEVER welcome to visit the farm and that I was going to block him. Which I did. I am a woman and was extremely intimidated at his erratic behavior and abusive tone. It did not end there.... His friend MAHENDRAN MOODLEY continued the abuse and harassment by WhatsApping me a Hindu curse and telling me I should be very very afraid and hide away in Positano (this was my WhatsApp profile picture). I was prepared to allow all of this to blow over, inspite of the fact that I felt victimized, but I have been advised to report both men to the authorities for harassment. I can only warn any principals out there to be very careful of these 2 men. They seem to be misogynists of the worst kind. The irony is that Mark is a chief executive at a global diversity company and “apparently” a multi award winning leader in Diversity and Inclusion. And Mahendran Moodley is a Dermatologist. How can 2 educated people behave in this way? Also I had a look at Mark’s other TripAdvisor reviews and noticed that out of 27 reviews - 20 reviews were all the lowest possible scores. It appears that he only reviews as purpose of a smudge compaign rather than give informative fare and balanced reviews. Mark and Mahendran a personal message to you both, enough is enough. If you continue to harass me I will take this matter further with all the evidence that I have. I have family members that are attorneys and also a judge in the family. I expect at the very least an apology from you both for your abusive and very worrying behavior.

A gem in the most beautiful setting! We were absolutely delighted on arrival at this magnificent accommodation - old farmhouses fabulously decorated with very well equipped kitchens (a must for us!). Kids thrived in the safe outdoors: walking, cycling and swimming in the dam. As well as discovering some farm animals. Not to mention the star gazing.
We occupied two of the farmhouses and could easily walk and cycle between them. All meals were easily prepared in the Manor house for our large group.
Chantal was terrific in assisting us with all our needs - no inquiry was left unattended.
Our 4 night stay left us wanting more - absolutely impressed. We will be back!

We stayed for 2 nights and wished it was for more. Hannes cottage was excellent, the tranquility and location was superb. Great hiking from the farm, access to fresh produce was great. If you have self catering provisions this is a high quality place. Really relaxing, really calm. Super facilities. The staff were efficient, friendly and very good. one of the best places we have stayed at and if back in South Africa very likely to visit again.

As you open the white gate,
You might as well
Hop on and take that ride like you used to.

You arrive
The enormous prickly pear cactus is the first to say hello
You enter the house and
Calmness
Chantelle
A scruffy dog
Wooden floors
And a fridge full of lamb chops

Welcomes you

You can wake up at 6am
Not to the sound of your iphone’s alarm
But to the sheep’s bleat
to go and milk the cow.

You will:
Drink fresh milk every morning in your coffee
Sit at the braai with friends
with your glass of pinotage
Drizzle the olive oil from the farm
Over whatever you like.
See the stars so clear
Climb into bed, realizing that the electric blanket
Has already been switched on
For you.

This place is so perfect for
a quick break away for couples/
a long holiday for big families

Chantelle has the best recommendations for stuff to do.
She recommended we go to Buffelsdrift, to spend time with the Elepehants.
Amazing amazing!!!
I would suggest you don’t plan too much.
Just get there, sleep, eat, rest, drink wine, swim, lie in the sun.

Thank you for all your support
love, service, helping hand and hugs.
We will be back sooner than you think.
I know for sure, this must be the place.

This wonderful gem hidden away on the R407 between Klaarstroom and Prince Albert is a must for any avid traveler looking for a relaxed

We had the privilege of staying in Manor House. With it's clever layout and understated luxurious and classical furnishings it is was wonderful to take in the many clever uses of items and mix of styles brought together to create this special classical space.

I was really impressed by the size of the 4 large en suite bedrooms, 2 beautiful sitting areas with fire places, a magnificent open plan well kitted out farm kitchen and dining room where everyone gathered daily to share in the preparation of meals. The house has 3 verandas where we got to sit and take in the magnificent views of the olive groves, lavender fields, sheep who frequented the garden to graze on the front lawn and the magnificent Swartberg Mountain Range as well as eating lunches alfresco style.

During our stay we got to feed the baby lambs, milk Wendy the resident cow and had a fascinating olive oil tasting.

The highlight for me was walking the farm every morning and being able to take in the many interesting plants and flowers which are indigenous to the area, drinking water straight from the streams on the farm which originate directly from its source on the farm.

Chantal the farm manager/ Hostess is fantastic! Chantal took great care of us and baked the most amazing fresh olive loaves for us which we couldn't get enough of.

I can honestly say this has been one of my most memorable getaways. Vrisch Gewagt has something very special about it. I left feeling the need to return.
