The De Bergkant is a historical Cape Dutch Guest House located in the beautiful, historical town of Prince Albert at the foot of the dramatic Swartberg mountains in the Great Karoo. The De Bergkant offers their guests four Deluxe Suites with lounge, bedroom and en suite bathroom, and five equally well-appointed Deluxe Double Rooms with en suite bathroom. All rooms have ceiling fans, air-conditioning, tea- and coffee facilities, TV (with DStv) and most have under-floor heating. All the bathrooms have double showers, Victorian baths and under-floor heating for chilly winter days. All beds are either twin- or king size. Breakfast for our guests is served either inside in our poolside dining room or on the terrace. Much of our fare on our breakfast comes from the village and local farms in and around Prince Albert. The secluded gardens boast two large saltwater swimming pools: a 15m pool and a 10m walled, private pool. We also offer a sauna and steam bath.

Super efficient and super flexible hosts. We were a group of 10 cyclists using de Bergkant as a base to cycle to de Hel and back. Our hosts packed us breakfast for the road (as we left early). We spent the middle night in de Hel and so normally would have needed to pack up our rooms before departure after our first night. Because the owners had no guests for our middle night they allowed us to leave all our luggage in our rooms. This was a "logistical bonanza". The rooms are very comfortable and best of all are the large walk in double showers without any irritating pokey little shower cubicles! Hopefully all bathroom designers could spend a night here and finally commit all shower door structures to the "outdated architectural scrap heap"!

What a wonderful experience of hospitality by our Swiss hosts. Excursion and dinners were arranged, rooms were impeccable with quality finishes and attention to detail. Breakfast was superb with some bircher muesli added to spoil us. Overall a great experience.

We've just returned from three nights at Bergkant Lodge. Our family (15 pax including 4 children) booked out the lodge for the long weekend. We cannot sing the praises of Renata and her team enough.

I personally loved my room. I was in the Aloe room (up the green stairs). You want for nothing in your room. The underfloor heating was on in the bedroom and bathroom (it is mid-winter here in SA and Prince Albert does get cold). I loved the decor and the black and white tiled bathroom with double showers, copper piping and farmstyle basins. Just beautiful. And impeccably clean! When I was asked by my family what my highlight of the weekend was I said: "my room!"

But there are three swimming pools too, two braai areas, a sauna and a steam room...all gorgeous. We had a lovely day by the pool on Saturday, reading and relaxing on the sun loungers.

The location is perfect. You're right at the one end of town, There is a restaurant across the road (we ordered pizza from here and had them delivered to the pool for lunch) and plenty more within a block or so. If you have a bicycle bring it along.

We also went for a sunset drink on the koppie behind the lodge, which was exquisite and I'd recommend it if you're into that sort of thing - a 5 min hike.

The breakfast that is included is delicious and the service is excellent and personal. I ordered poached eggs on a croissant most mornings and the soaked Bircher muesli was an absolute hit with us too.

Thank you so much to Renata, Micky and their team. You have a fantastic offering.

On our way to the Cape from Johanneburg, I phoned De Bergkant Lodge in desperation after having left Hanover where the accommodation we had booked was certainly not up to the expected standard as per the reviews.
The lady from De Bergkant was so helpful and accommodating, helped us with directions and giving us a beautiful and comfortable suite to spend the night.
The room was very clean, beautifully appointed and had air conditioning and fans to cool the high temperatures of the Karoo.
And what a restful night it was allowing us to go on our eat well refreshed. The hotel just as the town of Prince Albert has such a wonderful old world charm about it.
I am so glad we had a chance to pass through this special little place.

We enjoyed a wonderful stay at De Bergkant Lodge. Renate and Micci are wonderful hosts and they were ably assisted by their manager Ashley who was super capable and professional. Renate made restaurant reservations for us and gave us the very best advice. You can see how hard she works and how important it is to her that her guests really enjoy their stay.

De Bergkant Lodge is beautifully maintained. The whole area is pristine and we just loved the tranquil gardens and two lovely pools. We enjoyed extremely relaxing massages with Lynn Marie in the spa area of the lodge. Big thanks to Lynn Marie who brought cabbage leaves to me at a restaurant one night to help relieve the pain in my broken toe. It really helped to bring down the swelling. It was such a lovely gesture and beyond the call of duty.

So to our suite, the Protea Suite, it was just wonderful, one large room with lovely high ceilings, a very comfortable sofa and huge bed. The bathroom was airy and bright. We were very impressed with the hard work of Joleyne who took care of our room. She took such care and attention even on the second day of our stay.

Breakfast was a delight, not just because of the delicious food but because of all the lovely birds who visited the trees during breakfast time. Finally Prince Albert is just a gorgeous, sweet and beautiful town full of lovely people. We spent a day wandering the Main Street enjoying coffee, shopping, wine tasting and lots more.

We can’t wait to come back. Many thanks to all the De Bergkant team.

From the warm welcome to the cosy rooms in a historic setting, De Bergkant Lodge is the best place to stay in the quaint village of Prince Albert. And it is the perfect base camp to explore numerous dust roads in the vicinity to find your favorite sundowner spot. And when you come back all heated up the large pools of the lodge are a blissful relieve to the usually high Karoo temperatures.

Owners were super friendly, super efficient and super flexible. We were a cycling group that based ourselves in Prince Albert to ride to de Hel and back. So we needed accommodation on either side of our night in de Hel. And because the owners had no reservations for the middle night (when we were in de Hel) they kindly allowed us to leave all our gear in our rooms. This will obviously not normally be possible if the owners had guests to book into our rooms. The rooms were also extremely comfortable and the best was undoubtedly the very well designed spacious showers. Such a simple and clever design that left me wondering why "pokey little showers with rickety doors have not been banned from any new home design.

We spent 2 comfortable and relaxing nights at this lovely lodge in Prince Albert. We were a party of 5, including a dog, who was also made to feel most welcome. Our room was spacious, providing anything we may have needed, including underfloor heating. The garden was gorgeous, so well cared for and tranquil. The pool looked inviting, and the enormous ancient Wild Fig tree, which welcomed us on the way from the parking area to reception, was just spectacular!! Breakfast was substantial and service friendly and helpful. Renate made us feel at home and shared information on things to see and do, as well as restaurant options. It's an easy walk to the shops and restaurants, parking is on the premises. We were even able to pick our own lemons for our G&T's, enjoyed in the garden. Definitely recommended.
