Staying at Boschendal was one of the highlights of our 3 week trip across South Africa. As we were in the area between Christmas and New Years, we could only get two nights despite booking 7 months in advance (and paying 2x the normal prices). It was all worth it. We only wish we could’ve stayed longer.

We stayed in a Werf cottage. It was very centrally located but very nicely equipped with everything one could need. Just a few months earlier, we had stayed at Meadowood Resort in Napa Valley California. We remarked how much better Boschendal was at a fraction of the cost. The California wineries have a lot to learn from the South African ones when it comes to the overall experience.

If you have kids, this place is a must. We’ve never seen something like the Tree House before. Our kids spent an entire day there while we did the wine tram. They loved it all and grew attached to some of the staff. What a unique and amazing experience for kids and adults alike.

I know there are many great places to stay in this area. While I can’t make a direct comparison, I will very likely return here when I come back.

We have been very looking forward to our stay at Boschendal since we visited the wine estate 01/2018 and fell in love instantly. Upon arrival service at reception was very charming and helpful. We did arrive a little too early but that wasn’t of any problem, we could leave all suitcases with them to be brought to our cottage as soon as it was ready. Also we got offered a glass of MCC which was also very nice. We booked one of the large Werf Cottages. They look just as pretty as you can see on management or website photos - like really pretty! And it’s nice to have so much space since we decided in eat in all days and enjoy the nice view from our garden terrace. The pool is a bit further off (we were in cottage 1) but that is fine. Breakfast from the harvest table is very good, also you can choose between different warm dishes.
Still I must say as it is a popular wine estate and everything has to stay in shape you don’t get that much privacy as you wish. I know it’s a difficult complain but first morning we were woken up around 7am by the lawn mower. Also the cottages are place right next to the main road leading to the estate. Each and every day their are gardening people walking close around the house - I mean right next to your windows. And you can definitely have a nice view inside the cottages. I know these people just do their job and the garden is of high maintenance. I am so sorry to say this but it was really annoying cause you have to watch what you are wearing. So for us this was actually the biggest issue...
For dinner you can either choose the Werf restaurant or just have a little shopping session at the farm shop. We also like the pizza delivery.

Our positive experience started the moment we checked in. Zandri and her colleague were so friendly and accommodating. They allowed us to check a little earlier into the Orchard cottages that were ready. Solomon at security at the entrance is a jovial person. The Orchard cottages are beautifully furnished and complementary coffee, tea, milk, wine and cookies were provided. We wanted ice, phoned and not long after a driver arrived with the ice and keys of the other cottages.
Complimentary transport was provided to the Werf restaurant for a wonderful tasty 3 course dinner. The restaurant staff went out of their way to serve and assist us. The beds are comfortable and the cottages have roof fans and aircons.
The delicious breakfast consisted of orange juice, scons, croissants, a warm breakfast (I had eggs benedict) and excellent coffee.
A guest left a phone charger in a cottage and Zandri phoned to inform us that the item will be in safe keeping until collection.
Thank you to all the amazing staff of Boschendal!

We stayed at Bertha's retreat cottages for over a week as a family.

The reception service was excellent, and check-in was easy. We received a complimentary welcome hamper, which was a nice touch.

Unfortunately, the cottages are right next to others, so you share a wall and can hear TV's, moving furniture, etc.

We asked on our second night to be moved to another cottage further away from the parking and a few families next door who were up drinking with speakers next door from us the night before, and luckily they accommodated us.

Even if it was quieter it didn't make a huge difference as new families with loud kiddies moved in. That said, I do not think the retreat is set up for people who want to get an afternoon nap on a holiday...

The cleanliness of the cottages is unfortunately also not great, drop something and notice the bits collecting under bits of furniture- had to ask reception to please get housekeeping to come and do a decent floor clean and bathroom as a piece of broken glass was still left in the corner of the bathroom. The furniture is also very stained.

The breakfasts served was good, staff was amazing. The only downside is that they do not have a decent coffee machine, so you have to make do with a filter coffee from a shared flask, and a canteen set up for tea, etc, it felt a little like a glam camp set up.

We walked over to the main Boschendal Werf daily, so note it is a bit of a long walk and you need to cross a very busy main road to get there, which makes it less appealing if you want somewhere where you can feel the kids will be safe going there to enjoy the treehouse, etc.

I would also suggest that if you know the distance from the Retreat Cottages means that people will drive there and back, that you offer guests complimentary bicycle usage and not rentals at R160pp for half a day- it does add up and would in many ways make the cottages slightly more appealing.

You can hear the main road from the cottages in the evenings.

Otherwise, if none of the above would bug you then you'd have an enjoyable time there. Or rather spend on getting a central Airbnb and visit the main werf as this is most definitely worth a visit.

My husband and I had the pleasure of a four night’s stay at Boschendal. We were warmly welcomed at reception. Strict Covid 19 protocols were adhered to with sanitizers widely available.

We stayed in the Orchard cottages (nr 9). The cottage was beautifully furnished and equipped with everything we needed in the kitchen. The quality of the utensils was excellent.

The cottage was spacious and sparkling clean. Housekeeping were done at the cottage when we had breakfast at Die Werf restaurant.

We received a complimentary bottle of Boschendal Blanc de Noir and fresh milk in our fridge. The Olive oil and Balsamic vinegar provided in the cottage was delicious and the best we tasted in a long time (dipped our fresh ciabatta in it).

We bought wine, meat, charcuterie, cheese, potato salad and fresh ciabatta loaves from the Deli to enjoy on our patio.

The views of the surrounding mountains from the Orchard cottages was breathtaking and left us with everlasting memories.

We enjoyed breakfast at Die Werf restaurant which was delicious (we drove there in our rental car). All the staff members at the restaurant welcomed us warmly each morning at breakfast.

We did a wine tasting which we thoroughly enjoyed. Adriaan was a perfect host and explained each wine we had in detail at a leisurely pace. We bough a few cases of wine which were couriered to our home.

Boschendal is also the ideal base to explore the surrounding winelands. It is 15 minutes drive to Stellenbosch, 15 minutes drive to Franschhoek and 15 minutes drive to Paarl.

Boschendal was the perfect place to relax and unwind and to spend a few romantic days with my husband. We treasure fond memories of our stay at Boschendal.

We had a lovely stay at Boschendal wine estate, the staff are polite, helpful and go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. We stayed in one of the Orchid cottages which was very well appointed and had magnificent views of the surrounding mountains. Our wine tasting of the 1685 range was superb and I thoroughly enjoyed the Chardonnay. The Deli could use more variety in their meal offerings for dinner but other than that we had a fantastic time. We will definitely be back.

I booked the hotel on Expedia well in advance and paid my deposit. Since I was travelling with my 3 grown sons I made a special request that we would have individual beds. However when checking later with he hotel I was told I would have to change my booking, but the individual beds were not available.

I cancelled the booking well in advance, however was denied a refund. I consider this appalling customer service. After acting in good faith I am now short of £144.

We stayed here for a few days with young kids whilst travelling around South Africa.

We had a wonderful stay at the Orchard Cottages. Here is a list of the best bits and points to consider:

Pros

Modern, clean, luxurious 2 bed cottage
Well equipped kitchen
Outside seating and bbq area
Good WiFi
Generator kicks in quickly when electricity goes out which happens a lot in South Africa
Excellent Play area for kids
Great breakfast at the Werf Restaurant
Friendly staff
Great location so you can easily visit places for the day or for lunch and dinner
Great views
Lovely Deli on site
Bikes available to hire
Beautiful gardens

Points to consider

The Werf Bistro - went for dinner one day and the menu is limited you have lots of amazing choices nearby so would encourage to branch out
Swimming pool near the cottages is a bit small but perfectly ok for a 2 day stay (our kids love the pool)

We had a great stay and would highly recommend. There are also wine tasting and picnic facilities which looked great but we didn’t get a chance to try them out. We would definitely book this again.

We stayed in Trout Cottage for 2 nights in January, the Cottage was clean and well maintained. We swam in the a couple of times it was wonderful and not a soul in sight, it was difficult to get in. We ate in the restaurant once, the food was good but thought the restaurant furniture and lighting should be up graded. The weekly market is a must to visit.

Such a strange experience. After 5 days in Cape Town where we were blown away by the dining experiences and before we went on to safari we scheduled two days in Stellenbosch. Sadly we were disappointed. After a rather weak arrival process we drove ourselves out to our villa. The villa was basic. The simple touches were non existent in the villa, no pool towels, no bathroom small amenities eg cotton wool or ear buds. The pool was cold. Our villa was opposite the staff room which meant we had no privacy. We opened our bedroom curtains and the staff were there and if not there they walked constantly and directly in front of the villa. Our breakfast was back in the main the building complex which meant you had to drive. This was slightly disappointing. There should have been bikes provided.

Then we booked dinner in their signature restaurant and it was like a posh Beef Eater (UK fast food bar restaurant). The Werf served terrible cocktails, no winery and bearing in mind we are in a wine yard this was beyond disappointing and the menu was terrible. We had actually sat at breakfast and watched chefs come out and pick fresh herbs and we were so excited for our evening or fresh cuisine and sadly after dinner we have no idea why we came to this establishment.

Happy to be leaving tomorrow.
