I was travelling with a companion on the Garden Route several times and tried out lots of new accommodations. After a very unfortunate start in Cape Town, the accommodation in Franschhoek was clearly the winner in all categories (rooms, beds, view/location, breakfast, laundry, guest relations) on the route (Cape Town, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, Cape Agulhas, Knysna, Oudtshorn/Buffelsdrift, Montagu). The breakfast was excellent (the best fruit salad and pancakes...), the beds were exceptionally comfortable for South Africa, the view was fantastic, the rooms were large, there was a decent ironing board and the laundry was returned perfectly washed and cared for (we later experienced this differently) and the owners and team were always there for the guests. I definitely recommend this B&B.

This is a glorious place to spend time. The rooms are fabulous, the views out of this world and the breakfast is to die for. The hosts are friendly and helpful.
The location of the guest house just off the main street means it is convenient but still quiet. Membership of a gym is included which you might need with all the good food available locally.

My wife and I stayed here for a night, having come to Franschoek for a dinner booking.
What a wonderful visit we had.
The rooms are spacious, very clean and with a super comfortable and large bed (winning :) Room also has a nespresso machine to make yourself a nice cup of coffee to drink while enjoying the beautiful peaceful views.
Fridge is stocked with drinks incl wine, water and cooldrinks for purchase at very affordable prices!!
The couple that run the place are very friendly and willing to assist in any ways possible.
The breakfast offers a great spread of options - fruit salad, crepes, croissants etc all very fresh! Together with this there is a hot breakfast on order.

Lastly, the location is great -1min walk from the main road with The Hoek coffee shop (best in Franschoek) , Hugenout chocolate shop and also the delicious Oku restaurant and Tuk Tuk microbrewery all on “their doorstep”

We have stayed in Franschhoek many times and once we found the Plumwood Inn it was like coming home. The setting and location are just perfect and you always felt valued when visiting. We knew it was under new management and on arrival were asked whether this was our first time. When we said no instead of a “welcome back” what we got from the receptionist was “well, there have been changes and you need to pay your outstanding balance immediately on arrival before I give you your room key. This is the new system now. Fair enough - except we were also asked to pay our balance on leaving! Obviously first receptionist didn’t log payment on the computer so the receptionist on leaving made a genuine error. It would have been nice though to have been asked whether we enjoyed our stay and “we hope to see you again”. Sadly, they won’t as the heart and soul are no longer here. We have been told the Plumwood will be undergoing a refurb and that prices next year will be double what we paid this year - and everything has to be done on line with no guarantee of a specific room. No amount of free cake can make up for the loss of the personal touch.

The Plumwood Inn is definitely THE place to stay in Franschoek and I had another pleasant stay this week. It’s really well located for the town centre and the wine tram office as well as all the best restaurants in town. There is secure parking for cars.

My room was room 4 which has a large patio with amazing views over the mountains and is the perfect place for early morning coffee or pre and post dinner drinks. The bed is comfortable and the large bathroom boasts a powerful shower. There are also a couple of pools in the complex and ample sunbeds for those with time between wine tasting.

But what really makes the Plumwood so special are the hosts, Roel and Lucienne. Together they’ve created this oasis in the midst of Franschoek and nothing is too much trouble - they are so welcoming and friendly and judging by talk around the breakfast table, so many guests are regulars of many years’ standing.

Talking of breakfast, this is outstanding: fresh with lots of choice including a cooked breakfast (and of course delicious pancakes) to set you up for the day.

I would heartily recommend the Plumwood to future travellers.

We have visited the plumwood many times over the past 20 years and knew it had changed hands in 2024. This trip was dissapointing and the standards have gone downhill. Our first interaction with the new owners was a demand for payment within 24 hours or the booking will be cancelled a few days before we set of despite the room being booked nearly 12 months before and no previous correspondence from them! There was no "mine Host" or permenant manager on site. The English Breakfast here used to be fantastic but no longer, the quality of the food and cooking was poor and my order was messed up on 4 of the 6 nights we stayed. The turndown service was erratic at best and non existant on some nights. Security gates were left open despite me making staff aware. To be clear this is not an issue with the staff some of whom were the same but rather a management (or lack of) issue. I hear the new owners aim to make this a 5* hotel but at present they seem to have taken it from a 4* to a 3*. Needs senior management focus to get it at least to back to where it was!

We have been going to South Africa for the last 25 years to escape the English winter. For the last 10 years we have stayed at Plumwood Inn for our final few days before returning back to London. It is pure magic! Ideally situated in a quiet street off the main road in Franschhoek with secure parking, you can stroll to all the restaurants of your choice in this quaint village. Very comfortable beds in the spacious rooms with en suite modern bathrooms. You also have a private shaded terrace overlooking the pretty garden with spectacular views of the mountains. Lovely breakfasts are served on the verandah overlooking the pool and you are welcomed each morning by friendly hosts Etienne and Roel who will chat about where you might want to visit and the merits of the many restaurants in the village.

Most superb guesthouse, value for money is excellent.
We found this place many many years ago and keep on returning.
I made the booking via their own website and got 10% discount which was very welcome.
The moment you walk through the gate, you know from the warmth of their welcome that you are going to have a great time.
The hosts are the most caring and special people and the staff is mostly still the same from when we first came here. Monica at reception is also lovely and professional.
Breakfast is amazing, every day different but every day great. Homebaked goodies.
Special breakfasts for those who have dietary requirements, I didn't try it but I saw it for other guests who had a gluten allergy and it looked yummy.
The rooms have everything you need, well thought of. The Nespresso machine in the room is a fantastic extra.
The view from the luxury rooms is fantastic, especially when you think that you are now in the middle of the village.
The guesthouse used to be 3 different houses which are now joined together, I guess all together it is about 1 acre.
Beautiful mature garden, lots of colours and also lots of birds in the garden.
Roel gives very good advice of which wineries to visit, and also restaurants.
We did have some power outages while in South Africa but was very glad that the Plumwood Inn doesn't have a noisy generator with the diesel smell. One can live without power for 2 hours.
And we were the first ones to use the new garden shower, brilliant.
We have already booked our next stay!

We have been visiting South Africa for 26 years to escape the British winter. For the last 20 years we have spent a few days at Plumwood Inn before flying home. It is pure magic. There is secure parking, and spacious rooms with a balcony or verandah all with stunning views. Breakfast is a delight, served on a patio overlooking one of the 2 pools. Fruit, and of course a cooked English style breakfast as well as cheeses, cold meats, home made pastries and delicious pancakes.
The hosts, Lucienne and Roel, make everyone so welcome and are happy to chat about local places to visit and the many wine tastings available, as well as advice on first class restaurants in the village. Franschhoek is a fabulous village to visit and a stay at Plumwood Inn is the icing on the cake.

It is the second time that we have stayed at the Plumwood Boutique Hotel. It is one of those rare places in the world where you feel straight at home. The rooms are spacious and tastefully furnished, the bedding is comfortable. The breakfast spread generous and delicious. The location, just a few steps away from the heart of Franschhoek makes it the ideal spot to explore the town on foot. The staff is friendly and helpful. We will for sure come back to this special boutique hotel.

Our self-catering cottages are not on the same premised as Plumwood Inn. Bamboo Cottage and Petit Jourdan are in Pierre Jourdan Street, House Giverny is located in Wilhelmina Street. All cottages have 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, lounge, kitchen and garden with pool.
