Detailed Reviews
From the moment of arriving to when we left - 4 hours later - it was sublime. The weather helped of course but the setting overlooking the valley to the mountains beyond is stunning. Every member of staff we encountered was courteous and helpful. Lunch was as relaxed as it can get with beautifully presented, delicious food. With a choice of 2 or 3 course menu prices, which in our opinion were very good value, there are no nasty surprises. At some of the Fine Dining establishments down in the town we would have spent twice as much and without the view. Fab.

The suite was lovely with an amazing view of the vineyards and mountains. The room was combined with a living space and the bathroom was large with stand alone bath also overlooking the magnificent view. Very private villa, with our own small splash pool. Think you must ask for the renovated separate villas. Ours was called Provençal.
La Petite Ferme is not within walking distance of Franschhoek (3 miles approx.. and there is no complimentary shuttle, we had to pay $20US + tip to go into town and back. Because our room was so lovely and didn’t want to pay another $20US, we decided to have dinner there. The reviews I had read were spilt, I knew it wasn’t the best restaurant in the area but decided to be lazy and stay on sight. Mistake! Really not good…less than average. As starters, the goat cheese puffs…look for the almost non existent goat cheese…served with pieces of nut toffee? So bad…rarely had something in such poor taste! My husband had the fish cakes…nothing special. As main the beef was tender and my venison was below average. We skipped the desserts, we had had enough of bad food by then! In retrospect we should have gone to Foliage…same chef as the restaurant Dash were we had the best meal during our whole trip in SA.
Walking back from the hotel restaurant to our villa was very treacherous. There were no lights, very dangerous…We simply couldn’t see were we were going…sometimes walking into a bush. Please, for the security of your guests do put minimal lighting along the pathways…you could get inexpensive solar ones…might just be saving you a costly liability suit in the future.
At the reception some didn’t seem to care whether we were served or not…The receptionist, never made the telephone call to check when the driver was picking us up the next morning, although we had asked her to check on this as the contract was between the travel agency and the hotel. When this lady’s shift was finished, luckily the night shift young man at the reception did a great job checking into it for us.
High marks for the room not so much for the rest.

My husband and I stayed in the veranda suite for two nights and had a fantastic stay. From our entry at the security gate, to the front desk, restaurant and concierge - staff were incredibly helpful and professional, checking in with us throughout to ensure that we had everything we needed and were enjoying our stay.
We enjoyed the welcome drink on arrival and the fruit bowl in the room was a nice touch. The room itself was large and well equipped and furnished. I am told that their recently refurbished vineyard suites are even better. We had a lovely view of the mountains and vineyards.
The hotel currently offers a very attractive reopening package on their website that includes breakfast and dinner (both of which were incredible). Due to Covid safety measures, each guest receives their own “buffet” breakfast filled with fruit, cold meats, cereals and pastries together with a selection of made to order hot breakfasts - we tried different ones (including salmon frittata and eggs benedict, all of which were delicious).
I only wish we could have stayed longer!

Tried to have a romantic getaway for our last night in Cape Town. Arrived to a pool filled with leaves and toilet paper on the floor outside. A dirty ice bucket filled with warm water was left for us to which we were told “must have melted” yet there was one cold reusable water bottle, clearly left from the previous guests cold while the “complimentary” wine, gin, tonic, soda and other water were all room temperature. After walking to the reception to look at the wine list as it is not provided in the room, we also ordered a salad and pasta. Our salad arrived without dressing or the chicken ordered. The staff seemed progressively annoyed by us pointing out how things were not cleaned in our room such as how the person who came to skim the pool in front of us (just what every guest wants at $600/night) noticed that there was not a second pool towel left for us as they only left the one unused one from the previous guest. We checked in at 3 PM. This is unacceptable. Oh but management will not be back until tomorrow, of course.

Having booked 4 nights here it was with some trepidation we read quite a few negative reports here. We spent 4 nights in a large and comfortable Manor House suite, every member of staff we interacted with was friendly and helpful. All our breakfast were good quality and plentiful, served either in the conservatory dining room or outside. On arrival one of the managers asked for our preferences for dining and arranged 2 very good lunches elsewhere , one was outstandingly good. The hotel uses a taxi firm which was prompt and efficient, added to the room bill and paid on departure.
There were perhaps a couple of housekeeping issues but certainly nothing serious. Having eaten here a few years ago we would have graded it then as good fine dining, now I think it would be fair to say it’s more good gastropub type food. The menu is unchanging all season but as people dine around and wouldn’t perhaps eat here more than once that doesn’t matter. There is many many dining options in town, no matter how many nights you stay, and people come up from town to dine here.
All in all given the dining options and ease of arranging them we would hesitate to stay again, the view must be amongst the best in the area.
I hope this might put future guests minds at rest!

Response from Riaan Kruger, Other at La Petite Ferme
Responded 21 Feb 2023
Dear StRobear, Thank you for the feedback and thank you for contacting me to point out your review was meant to read ..." we wouldn't hesitate to stay again..." which we were very glad to hear. Thank you for the constructive feedback and we are discussing options with the head chef for our long stay guests and a dish of the day will be implemented to address this challenge. The menu will also highlight more seasonal dishes going forward. Thanks again for your constructive feedback and getting in touch. All the best and hope to see you again should you visit the Winelands in future. Warmest regards, Riaan

This was our third stay at La Petite Ferme and every visit has been wonderful. This time we stayed in the La Petite suite, which is the smallest of their suites but offers excellent value for money and also has a great porch area for relaxing and soaking up the sun. Breakfast was excellent and a good variety of hot and cold options are available. A special thanks to Pieter from reception all his assistance and recommendations during our stay. The reasons we keep coming back are the breathtaking views and wonderful service.

The table for our group of 10 was superbly set up with the best service and flexibility
The food was delicious and variety wide to cater to any taste. The wine especially bottled for the restaurant is extremely perfect for any type of food.
An extraordinary experience

The hotel is located in Franschoek, one of the best wine growing estates in the wider Cape Town area.
Franschoek is approximately 90kms/56miles from Cape Town and is known for the wine estates as well as some superb restaurants.
Whilst the La Ferne hotel is excellent, I have not stayed there so I cannot really comment, the restaurant was an extreme disappointment.
In a hotel such as this and at the prices they charge you would expect the food to be very good or at least good.
Unfortunately we were very disappointed, of the 4 dishes we ordered three were very average although the one diner said theirs was good.

We stayed over for one night and had dinner. In the restaurant the food and service were extremely good.
I am afraid the hotel was well below the standard expected.
The internal telephone didn’t work, so impossible to speak to the Reception. The log fire went out and we had no ability to relight, because we couldn’t call for matches or fire lighters. The heated floor in the bathroom did not work. Hot water bottles were unavailable and the room was extremely cold. The only redeeming feature was the view (spectacular).
So all rather disappointing.

La Petite Ferme is a delight to be savoured. There is something surrealistic about waking up in the morning and from your patio or from your private splash pool, looking onto the beautiful vineyard. The rooms are decadent and the restaurant is world class fine dining. This is all amazingly brought together by the General Manager, Riaan Kruger who has an eye for details and goes out of his way to make the guest have a once in a lifetime experience. The rest of the staff have followed his lead and are very efficient, warm and friendly. This boutique hotel is an amazing romantic getaway for any couple or even for an individual wanting peace and calm. Heaven on earth!

Sorry it has taken me a few days to respond - I think it's probably a 2-3 mile walk into town and the wine train is almost smack in the middle of town. And it's not that easy of a walk; the first hall is along a pretty busy road with lots of fast traffic. I think it would be easier and safer to take a cab. The hotel office is closed starting early evening so it can be a little hard to arrange for a cab unless you reserve it early. It's a great hotel, just not that convenient to the downtown area.
